May, 16 2013
Dear Readers,

AERO conference is upon us! On Wednesday, hundreds of educators will be descending upon the New York area to join us for our 10th annual conference. If you are considering attending, you can still register to join us. Read on for information on how to inquire about single day passes, group rates and special considerations. As always, we also have news and resource items from around the world of educational alternatives. We hope you enjoy the content.

AERO Conference is THIS WEEK!
The 10th annual AERO conference is this Wednesday, but it is still possible to register for the AERO conference. The best deal is the package including food, a dorm room and a low registration rate. But we can still make special arrangements with groups or with individuals who need financial help and we're doing that every day. We have good deals for college students if they contact us directly. Just reply to this newsletter, write to jerryAERO@aol.com or call us at (516) 621-2195.

NEW!: Single Day Passes to AERO Conference

The conference is almost full but we have room for a limited number of day passes. We didn't know if we'd be able to offer any until now, so be sure to reserve your pass while they last. If you purchase a day pass, you will be able to come to the AERO conference for that entire day, including the keynotes. Click here to reserve your pass today. You can look at the keynote and workshop schedule here. We'll take the day pass option down when they are filled.

Transportation
We have contracted with 3J's Limousine to provide some transportation for the conference. They will bring a group to the Brooklyn Free School visit and back and from the Hicksville Econolodge to the campus in the morning and back in the evening. They will meet some trains as well. To contact the company directly call (888) 948-1357.

If you have any questions or need to make any special arrangements write to jerryaero@aol.com.

If students designed their own schools...

Charles Tsai has just been added as a presenter at AERO conference. Meet the filmmaker next week in New York!

The "best small town" in America experiments with self-directed learning at its public high school. A group of students gets to create their own school-within-a-school and they learn only what they want to learn.

Does it work? Charles Tsai finds out by spending a week with the Independent Project.

Featured Books: Lives of Passion, School of Hope & After Summerhill

We offer two of the best books detailing the lives of alternative school graduates, After Summerhill and Lives of Passion, School of Hope. These are excellent titles for both educators looking to better understand what their students might experience as they take their next step in life after attending an alternative school Additionally, these are excellent titles to have available for prospective and questioning parents who need the reassurance that their child can succeed by taking an alternative path in their education. Both books are honest accounts that detail the challenges these graduates faced in addition to their successes.

You can purchase both titles at a great discount currently.

Gathering of Our America
Dear friends:

On March 21 - 22, 2013 we celebrated the Second Gathering of Our America in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. This was second to the First Gathering of the Americas and the Caribbean held in Caguas, Puerto Rico on March 29, 2012. The First Gathering was part of the 20th International Democratic Education Conference (20 IDEC 2012) held in the same place on March 24 -28, 2012.

This is an effort aimed to connect and promote the education transformation in the Americas. We have gathered education projects and efforts described as alternative, democratic, personalized; in defense of human, children and youth rights, promoting a culture of
peace, cooperative, among others. The Second Gathering approved the included manifest constituting Encuentro de Nuestra América (Gathering of our America).

We cordially invite all who will be interested to adhere to the manifest by expressing so by writing to justo@nuestraescuela.org.

View the manifest here.

In solidarity,

Justo Méndez Arámburu
