What Works! - 10th Annual AERO Conference | Bookstore | Become a Member!
March, 26 2013
Dear Readers,

This week we have ten reasons you should attend AERO conference, a reminder that our discounted rate ends in six days, a trailer for a new film on democratic schools, featured book of the week, an interview with Robert Mattuck, and our weekly selection of noteworthy news and resource items form around the world of educational alternatives.

AERO Conference Update
10 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Miss the AERO Conference in New York

1. This may be the only time AERO conference is held in New York, because of the logistical difficulties involved in holding it here. Ordinarily, hotels in the NYC area would charge double or triple the prices we were able to negotiate with Long Island University.

2. You will be able to hear and meet Alfie Kohn, one of the most articulate and outspoken critics of high-stakes testing.

3. You will be able to network with alternative educators coming from 7 counties and 29 states and provinces!

4. You will be able to visit some of the most interesting alternative schools.

5. You will be be able to meet some of the top innovators in the unschooling and homeschool resource center movement.

6. You will be able to meet and attend workshops by Derry Hannam, one of the world's experts in public democratic schools from England, because of a one-time scheduling fluke!

7. You will be able to attend over 60 scheduled workshops, such as our workshop for school starters.

8. You will be able to attend and host unscheduled spontaneous workshops during every workshop time-slot - a unique AERO conference experience!

9. The impact it may have on you professionally and personally. Many past attendees have praised the conference as being life-changing!

10. The quality of our workshop presenters. Some workshop presenters would ordinarily be keynoter speakers elsewhere, such as Blake Boles, founder of Zero Tuition College, author of College without High School and his new book, Better than College.

For possibly the first time, attendees will get to see keynoters Dr. Elina Lampert-Shepel, an expert on Vygotsky, Dr. Peter Gray, who's new book on play was just published, and Nikhil Goyal, the 17-year-old student who wrote One Size Does Not Fit All.

The Discount Registration Rate Ends in 6 days!
The discounted conference rate is $225 for just six more days, but if you place a deposit today you can lock in at the current low rate! If you are currently, or become, an AERO member you can now get the 10% member discount on the conference fee, bringing it to only $202.50! The conference rate will eventually go to $325.

Jerry Mintz attended the fourth annual conference of the New York Collective of Radical Educators, NYCORE, last Saturday. We heard there were 700 attendees for the one day event. We handed out flyers for the upcoming AERO conference and met many people who intend to attend.

Alternative Higher Education: Robert Mattuck Interview, Goddard College
Robert came to Goddard in 1939 and taught philosophy, literature, film and theatre fore 50 years. He also created an innovative counseling program which he would teach to faculty and staff. This is the heart of today's current advisor model. Robert also organized many of the educational conferences over the years. He retired in 1989 and received an honorary doctorate from Goddard in 1995.

In this interview Robert told the story of how he came to work at Goddard. He also discusses at length the challenges that the faculty faced as they set out to establish and grow an alternative educational institution in rural Vermont.
