What Works! - 10th Annual AERO Conference | Bookstore | Become a Member!
March, 17 2013
Dear Readers,

This week we have more updates on our upcoming conference (including our discounted conference rate ending), a new featured book, another video in the Mission Hill series, and our weekly selection of noteworthy news and resource items form around the world of educational alternatives.

Conference Updates
Tentative Workshop Schedule Posted
We now have a tentative workshop schedule on our conference website. There are now more than 60 workshops listed!
Discount Registration Rate Ending!
There are still dorm rooms and meal plans available at very low rates. But the discounted conference rate of $225 for the whole five days will end March 31st or it may lapse at any time (once we exceed 250 attendees). So if you plan to attend, at a minimum, you should lock in the current rate by placing a deposit ($50 for an individual or $100 for a group). If you have a group of six or more we can arrange a special rate. If you have any questions, just reply to this newsletter.

For school groups or families with students under thirteen we have a special arrangement with the nearby Econolodge. You will need to make you reservation directly with them by calling (516) 433-3900. Mention that you are going to the AERO conference to get the special rate. We will be providing transportation from the Econolodge to the campus in the morning and evening. For more information, click here.

The discounted conference rate is $225 (for a short time), but if you are currently, or become, an AERO member you can now get the 10% member discount on the conference fee, bringing it to only $202.50! The conference rate will eventually go to $325.
Financial Assistance for Attendees It has always been AERO's policy to do everything we can to help people get to our conferences. If potential attendees are low-income or in a difficult financial situation we will try to make special group rates, exchange some registration funds for volunteering, help with fundraising suggestions, try to find alternative housing, etc. Sometimes people will make donations to help other potential attendees in need. Of course we need to be careful because there are many expenses in putting on a conference and the only income we have to support it is conference fees. Very rarely do we find individuals or organizations willing to financial sponsor the conference. Such is life at the cutting edge!

So, for the next two days we want to hear from people who need special arrangements to get to the conference. Of course we'd also be interested in hearing from people who'd like to support the attendance of someone who otherwise couldn't make it to the conference. Just write to jerryaero@aol.com with the specifics and we'll do what we can.
Featured Book - Better Than College
Better Than College: How to Build a Successful Life Without a Four-Year Degree by Blake Boles

Blake Boles will be speaking at AERO Conference this May.

Do you need college in order to be taken seriously and earn a real living?

Conventional wisdom says yes. But true success relies upon self-knowledge and entrepreneurship: two qualities that you can obtain effectively and inexpensively without traditional college.
Better Than College provides the step-by-step guidance and inspiration necessary to design your own higher education. This book teaches you how to find community, stay on track, and get hired or start your own venture, all without a four-year degree. Curious college students will learn to think clearly about their motivations, plan a gap year, or navigate life after school. And Better Than College will show parents how self-directed learning can lead to a lifetime of achievement no expensive institution required.
Love & Limits: The Latest Chapter from "A Year at Mission Hill
