Retirement of 2 older Sherco coal units to get study
This past summer, CURE joined with other clean energy advocates in Minnesota to generate 11,400 comments to Minnesota's Public Utilities Commission regarding the future of Xcel Energy's Sherco Coal Generation Plant. The majority of comments asked regulators to order Xcel to find cleaner energy options for Minnesota's future and to retire Sherco.
Last Thursday, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission voted to keep the state headed firmly toward a cleaner energy future. In a unanimous vote, the commission ordered Xcel Energy to take a detailed look at the future of its largest coal-fired power plant next year and to study how soon its two oldest units could be retired.

On November 5, CURE hosted a presentation by Don Reicosky, a retired USDA-ARS soil scientist still actively educating people world-wide about his research on CO2 emissions, tillage practices in agriculture and soil organic matter. The event was intended for our staff and for the staff of a few other organizations to help increase our soil literacy. And why would the staff of a watershed and climate organization worry about dirt? Because "dirt" is arguably the single most important integrating (and understudied) factor that influences the world's environment. Click here to read why.
