Hike and Tour the Gneiss Outcrops SNA
This Wednesday, July 24th at 5 PM
Join this Wednesday, July 24th, for a beautiful evening hike with CURE Board Member and Master Naturalist - Don Robertson. Bring a sack dinner and meet at 5 PM to visit about the area and learn a bit about the importance of the river valley to the Dakota people. Raised in the Ortonville area and currently residing in Belview, Robertson brings a bit of his own experience and love of the river valley to this outdoor adventure.
Gneiss Outcrops SNA, located near Granite Falls on the Minnesota River in Chippewa County protects some unique rock outcrops and riverside prairies. The unit is 234 acres. The Gneiss Outcrops, formed approximately 3.6 billion years ago, are among the oldest known rock on the earth's surface. This SNA's significance steadily increases as other outcrops along the Minnesota River are exploited for granite mining, housing, and recreational use. These pyramidal outcrops along the Glacial River Warren Valley rise to about 50 feet above the general level of the land, revealing parallel bands of gneisses of various striking colors, from pink to gray/black. The very rare Great Plains prickly pear and brittle cactus can be found on the dry rock surfaces. Read more here from the DNR: Birding Opportunities at Gneiss Outcrops SNA.

Wild River Academy's High School Expedition
August 12-14 on the Minnesota River
Wild River Academy is having a high school trip from August 12 - 14 on the Minnesota River. The first day, we will go to Moonstone Farm in Montevideo to tour the farm, eat a local and organic dinner, go swimming, sit around the fire, and camp for the night. The owners of this farm, Audrey and Richard, are amazing stewards of the land and are a wealth of knowledge about Minnesota natural and native history.
The next morning we will meet a DNR Minnaqua intern at Vicksburg County Park where we will learn about different fish species and have a chance to fish along the river. Then we will paddle a beautiful stretch of the watershed with large granite outcroppings and lush wildlife areas. We will camp at a canoe access only campground where we will cook, play games and music, and relax around the fire. The last day we will paddle to Morton, MN where a DNR Naturalist will meet us to tell us more about the Minnesota River Valley and do macro-invertebrate testing with the group. Students can get picked up/dropped off depending on home town. All food, gear, and transportation is included and trips cost $250/student.
This is a great way to expand your resume, get outdoors before the school year starts, and get to know the beautiful Minnesota River Valley. Please email [email protected] for more information.
