Message From the President

Happy summer sisters!
NL_0816

As I write this, my chapter is deep into its biggest fundraiser, our cookie stand at the Carroll County fair.  This year we made 1,536 logs of dough. Each log makes 2.5 dozen. That's 3,840 dozen cookies that we bake and sell at the fair! We purchased a trailer last year. The first time we have baked in the air conditioning! It is more than wonderful as the pictures show! I have seen on Facebook that your summers have been full as well. It seems we just left convention and we are already off and running! Your pictures show lots of smiles and hard work!

Another person who has been hard at work this summer is Dr. Gabel from our Long Term Project. He has been conducting the summer stuttering clinic that we help fund. He tells me that he couldn't do this without our help. So my challenge to all of you, GIVE. I encourage you to put this in your budget. Stress to your chapter the importance of the project. Our pledge in 2012 for the LTP was $100K. So far we have given $47,000. Let's fulfill this pledge for a worthy project! Send your checks to Project Chair, Sandy Johnson today!
Speaking of challenges, I have another. The 2016 Convention Synopsis says our total amount given last year was $935,226.40. That's $64,773.60 from ONE MILLION DOLLARS!  Oh my, can you imagine how amazing that would be? Let's do it! I know we can. We are women hear us roar, in numbers too big to ignore!
I look forward to more pictures. I love seeing your smiles and hearing about your hard work and the fun you had! Please let any of National Council know if you need anything.  Invite us for a meeting, a fund-raiser, or just a get-together. We love meeting you and sharing your chapter moments!

Special Surprise at Convention
One of the great opportunities on National Council is getting to attend some of our national projects.  Over the years, I have been able to go to Evanston, Illinois, to the Central Region finals of the Metropolitan Opera auditions. The last few years, our project representative, David O'Connor, has encouraged me to consider having a vocalist participate at our national convention.
This year he made it work!
Emily Margevich, from Hoopeston, Illinois, was able to travel with David and his wife, Judy, and join us on Saturday at convention. Emily is a junior at DePaul University.  Instead of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance as a part of the opening of
convention, Emily sang our National Anthem. She stayed with us through lunch and the afternoon presentation of project proposals, so also entertained us with at least five additional musical selections.
It was truly a "treat" for those who attended convention this year! We were able to collect a donation for Emily on Sunday morning.  That donation totaled $750 plus a $50 gas card.  Thank you so much ladies for allowing us to surprise Emily with this.  By the time you read this Emily will have received our donation and many thank you cards. Watch for her name in a few years, as a young singer with the Metropolitan Opera, as she is certain to go far!

Greetings from the Indiana State Association
The Indiana State Board held their summer meeting in June before the National Convention. The meeting was called to order by the newly elected president, Pam Gunterman. Following the business meeting, answers to the survey questions submitted during the state meeting were reviewed. An outstanding amount of positive comments were made congratulating the Upsilon Chapter of Greenfield for their effort to make the state meeting a success! Suggestions and recommendations were also reviewed and will be seriously considered. We appreciate everyone's comments.
Good News! The association website is getting a facelift and is set to roll out September 1, be sure to visit www.indianapsiotes.org to check it out. Don't forget to send us an invitation to your special event, we'd love to come for a visit.

Psi Iota Xi helps hospital improve
children's speech and hearing
July 12, 2016
GREENSBURG - The Psi Iota Xi sorority was founded in 1897 by women joining together with the intent of making a difference in their respective communities. Originally the focus centered around bringing new cultural experiences to the cities and towns through collective funding for music and art events. This mission expanded to include literature and literacy, and further graduated to helping those with speech and hearing difficulties.
Today, Psi Iota Xi sororities throughout the nation have given nearly a million dollars a year for these purposes, and our local Sigma Chapter is making sure their impact is felt locally. At the sorority's annual meeting on June 6, the ladies presented a check for $5,700 to the Hospital Foundation of Decatur County, to be used help fund this summer's Speech Articulation Camp and for the purchase of a new OAE Hearing screening unit.
The Speech Articulation Camp is offered through the Rehab Department at Decatur County Memorial Hospital, camp began July 12, 2016. It was held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays for three weeks, offering articulation practice to enhance a child's speech skills, as well as snacks and crafts. DCMH Rehab Services Director Lisa Oldham explained the importance of the Sigma Chapter's support: "Thanks to Psi Iota Xi's generous donation, the Speech Department at DCMH will be able to extend speech services to many children who may not be able to access these services, and to continue services during the summer for those receiving speech therapy during the school year."
The camp carries no cost to the parents due to the donation, and those interested in enrolling their children can contact the DCMH Speech Language Pathologist at (812) 663-1119.
The OAE Hearing unit will be used to help screen for hearing loss in newborns. In this test, sounds are played for the child through a miniature earphone and microphone placed in the ear. The device then measures the echo experienced in the ear canal accordingly. This procedure uses sounds that are associated with speech comprehension among others, and can help determine early hearing loss. Doctors can then help diagnose the issue and treat it at an early stage.
"This is a great group truly bettering their community, now and for the future," shared Foundation Director Bryan Robbins, "100 percent of this and any donation that goes to the Hospital Foundation stays locally, and we're honored to have the Sigma Chapter's support providing kids free access to the Speech Camp, and to better addressing potential hearing loss in children born at DCMH." Robbins explained that the funds will be placed in a restricted fund accessible by the Rehab Department for the intended uses only. Those wanting more information about restricted fund options or the Hospital Foundation may find details at www.dcmh.net/foundation or by calling the Hospital Foundation at (812) 663-1220.
Psi Iota Xi's purpose is for members to find self-direction and personal growth while seeking to enrich the lives of others by furthering philanthropic enterprises. Ladies interested in joining a network of friends dedicated to helping those in our community whether culturally, educationally, socially or financially are encouraged to contact Kim Crawley at 812-614-0753. The Sigma Chapter meets at 7 p.m. on the first Monday of the month September through June. The locations of the meetings may vary.
