Convention
Please plan to come to Indianapolis on Friday night and attend the Welcome Party, hosted by Beta Pi, Cambridge City. This evening is a great opportunity to get a "head start" on networking and catching up with your PIX Sisters. Bring your favorite electronic device and enjoy the evening socializing with your Sisters. Those who enjoy dancing can probably do that too! Be ready to play a few games with your favorite electronic device while you visit with your Sisters.

The jeweler will be at convention only on Saturday again this year, until around 2 pm.

National Editor, Heather Mitchell, wants you to contact her about getting your chapter a
Psi Iota Xi email. Contact Heather at nationaleditor@psiiotaxi.org, or make sure to see her at convention.

Deadlines
Please make sure to meet all deadlines: PCRs to your District Officer and Helicon articles to the National Editor by May 10th; Memorials from your chapter and convention registration to Alpha Chi, Hagerstown by May 15th.
The deadline for hotel reservations is May 23rd. Make sure to make your reservation as soon as possible, to get the Psi Iota Xi room rate.  Also make sure to say you are with "Psi Iota Xi," so to get a room in our block of rooms. Let SUSIE know if you still need a hotel room, as there are a few being "held" by the Marriott. There may be a couple of rooms left at the Fairfield Inn, next door.
Treasurers - PLEASE make sure to send your NP-20 form to your District Officer with your PCR. Do NOT send it to the state of Indiana by itself.

Long Term Project
Please consider making a donation to the Long Term Project, the Intensive Stuttering Clinic at the University of Toledo.  We are very close to being able to present Dr. Gable with ANOTHER $10,000 check this year!
Speaking of philanthropy, if you have been collecting pop can tabs, you can bring them to convention this year. Cathy Etzler, National Advisor, will collect them and take them to Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

Inspiration
Let's CELEBRATE that we have had NO chapters disband this year! That's a HUGE 1st in the last several years.
Let's CELEBRATE that we are an organization of hard-working women, dedicated to service to others, that has been GROWING, rather than declining, the last few years!
Let's CELEBRATE the hard work that the UPSILON chapter put in to hosting another AWESOME Indiana state meeting!

CALLING ALL PSI OTES! I look forward to seeing all of you at convention, at the Marriott East in Indianapolis, June 24th to 26th!

Convention is now less than 2 months away
Your chapter should have received, both by mail and electronically, the registration packet with all the appropriate forms and information. There is a large block of rooms at the Marriott, at $139 each, and 10 rooms at both the Fairfield Inn and LaQuinta, which are on the same property. PLEASE ask for the Psi Iota Xi block of rooms, so they are available to you and count toward our block for convention.
Registration packet documents (Click Here to Download Now) will also be available on the website or from any National Council member. Please send questions to alphachi@psiiotaxi.org.
Beta Pi, Cambridge City, will host our Welcome Party, on Friday night, from 8 to 10 pm. Bring your electronic devices and plan to have an awesome time!
There will be four workshops as a part of convention this year. We plan to have a "Gaming" workshop, from the podium, as a part of convention. We plan to have another "Treasurers" workshop, for those who were unable to attend any of the workshops last fall, as well as anyone who is interested in being a treasurer or would like to have some exposure to the PCR and electronic ledger to accomplish it. There will also be a Parliamentary Procedure workshop, hosted by Ed Frazer, our Parliamentarian, and an "Officer's Duties" workshop, hosted by your national officers.

PSI IOTA XI CHARMS are now available, from the national jeweler. They will have them at the national convention. With a bylaw change a couple years ago, you are now able to wear our Psi Iota Xi pin as a charm on a necklace!

What could be more gratifying than working to invest in new leaders, to foster innovation, and to steward the advancement of knowledge, tools, and techniques that help society?

With Psi Iota Xi as our partner, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation is able to work toward these goals each year.

The ASHFoundation is a nonprofit charitable foundation dedicated to innovation in communication sciences and disorders. Each year, we provide funding through various programs to help professionals launch their careers, engage in critical priorities of the field, leverage additional funding sources, and access mentoring and networking opportunities.

Psi Iota Xi members may be interested to learn that the ASHFoundation receives nearly 400 submissions annually to its various scholarship and research grant programs. From the total number of submissions received each year, only 10 percent of applicants and proposals will be funded due to insufficient resources. Psi Iota Xi's support is critical. We remain committed to bridging the gap between current support and priority needs that are so important to developing our field's innovative researchers, educators, clinicians, and future professionals. Psi Iota Xi's continuing generosity extends our reach to address the funding needs of some of our country's most promising scholars.

During the most recent cycle of funding, Laura Chapman, a speech-language and hearing sciences doctoral student in the communication sciences and disorders program at Ohio University, was the Psi Iota Xi scholarship recipient. Laura plans to continue research in aphasia to discover more effective ways to help individuals recovering from stroke communicate in daily situations. She is also committed to a career in academia as an educator working with undergraduate and graduate students. She expressed, "I hope to foster curiosity and creativity by utilizing adult learning processes in my classes, and by re-thinking the assessment of my students to focus just as much on the learning process as I do the outcomes of that process. By doing this, I believe that we can develop stronger clinicians, researchers, and human beings in general."

This talented student is just one of the many individuals Psi Iota Xi has funded over the years and she is part of a cohort of 2,002 individuals nationwide who have received funding over the life of the ASHFoundation. This lifetime of funding is directed at supporting innovators and sparking innovation to help individuals with problems in hearing, speech, language, or swallowing.

Our programs are sustained through the vital support of Psi Iota Xi, and we are sincerely grateful for the exceptional generosity and loyalty. Through your organization's participation with this national project partnership, you are shaping the future for the millions of children and adults who have speech, language, swallowing, or hearing disorders. We extend our appreciation for Psi Iota Xi's continued support and for consideration of future requests.

The ASHFoundation is dedicated to bringing forward-thinking solutions to individuals who face communication problems and to the clinicians who serve them. Psi Iota Xi is a partner helping us meet our mission. Support innovators. Spark innovation.

Beta Tau, Frankfort - Ladies Night Out
Beta Tau, Frankfort held its Ladies Night Out Fundraiser on Tuesday, April 12th. The idea for this fundraiser was gleaned back in the mid 80's. Beta Tau has been hosting this event each year since. The main attraction of the fundraiser is the possibility of winning $1,000 in a countdown. As a small bonus for having your number drawn, each tenth number drawn wins $10. This helps to make losing a little less painful!

Ladies Night Out started out to be more of a formal event with table clothes and a steak dinner. The meal is catered. Now, Ladies Night Out is less formal. We still use tablecloths, but no steak dinner. We used to have entertainment too. Most places no longer allow you to bring in your own food. They do allow an exception for our delicious cheese balls! We place them on every table with crackers. One year we had a small part of the Purdue Glee Club perform. Over the years there was also a style show, comedian, pianist and a group called Tons of Fun. Of course these added to the expenses and also made the night last a little too long. Beta Tau members begin their work in January meeting and dividing duties. Members ask local businesses for donations to use as door prizes. There are also ten major raffles with two of those being a 50/50. We have a Pampered Chef party to gain items to use in a raffle. Our members look all year for items to use as raffles. This year we were able to have a Coach Purse raffle. Some members donate raffle items, which in turn cuts down on expenses. Our Treasurer applies for the gaming license and files all the necessary reports associated with the gaming event. Getting the gaming license takes several weeks.

We provide a sheet of paper to all the guests with the numbers on it. This allows ladies to keep track during the countdown. We sell an average of 180-200 tickets each year. Years ago a mother-daughter Psi Ote team made it a goal to sell 300 tickets and they did! Several national officers and Past National Presidents attend regularly. The Omega chapter in Lebanon usually has a large group attend. Some of us attend their Basket Bingo in March. Sisters helping Sisters is always a good thing!

It is fun to pick out a theme. We encourage ladies to dress according to the theme. One year we had a survivor theme. We had short competitions between tables. At the end of the evening, the last ten women still in the countdown were given torches. As their numbers were drawn, their torches were extinguished. We also used to give the women a yellow rose if they were one of the last ten. Now, we give the last ten women a major/more expensive prize. These prizes come from our dear local or nearby businesses. The community benefits from the generosity of our guests and ladies have so much fun at the same time. Maybe we will see YOU next year?!

Paws With a Cause
NL052016
MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) - After spending several months inside prison cells, more than a dozen inhabitants of the Muskegon Correctional Facility are free and onto the next chapter of their lives.
The inaugural class of Paws With A Cause dogs parted ways with their 36 inmate trainers Tuesday morning. It was an emotional day for some trainers, who spent all day with the dogs since December.
"There's (sic) several who are pretty attached, but they do see the big picture: those dogs are going to help people out. They know we're going to replace it and give them another dog. Yes, they're sad to see the dogs leave," said prison counselor Rob Howard.
That sadness quickly subsided when inmate trainers were immediately given another Paws With A Cause dog to begin training. The inmates will work with the new group of dogs for about four months, focusing on commands and other training for service animals.
The 18 canines that made up the prison's first class will begin their next phase of training at the Paws With A Cause headquarters before going on to help people with autism or physical disabilities.
The prison's Paws With A Cause partnership is a competitive program; many inmates want to join. Trainers cannot have a violent past and must have a record of good behavior.

Michigan State Luncheon
NL052016
The Michigan chapters meet annually for a sisterhood luncheon. This year the luncheon was hosted by the Zeta Theta Chapter (Niles) at the Fieldstone Grill in Portage, Michigan. Every year the host chapter collects 'Love Gift Funds' from the other chapters. Zeta Theta donated the collected funds to the Northside Child Development Center in Niles, Michigan.

Today, kids are well aware of the global threats to the environment, but their physical contact, their intimacy with nature on a day-to-day basis, is fading. On a day to day basis children experience significantly less time directly interacting with nature, than their parents, and every previous generation. Parents are aware of the lack of outdoor exposure, as well as the vital impact it has on physical, cognitive, and social development. However, it can seem difficult to 'sell' a child on playing outside when the tv, the ipad, the sparkly toys, are all inside. Many of our kids are missing out and there is an abundance of research warning us of the consequences of this shifting of childhood play to the indoors. While it may seem ominous, the silver lining lies in the fact that plenty of individuals and organizations are taking notice, and taking action.

Northside Child Development Center in Niles, MI is one school that is fighting back. The school has plans to re-vamp their outdoor environment and create a natural playground. Grass covered hills for children to climb, root gardens where children may view real vegetables growing, and authentic wooden equipment will be featured. Such outdoor environments have countless benefits academically, socially, and physically. What will set this playscape apart from it's many modern counterparts, is the incorporation of art, and encouragement of self-expression that a handful of unique features will provide.

Children will have the opportunity to explore music and sound while playing a xylophone made from hollowed-out wood and recycled PVC pipe, and wind chimes made from wood and various recycled materials. Visual arts are no longer restricted to crayons or a stationary easel. A plexiglass sheet will be mounted outdoors, upon which children will be able to create with paint and a variety of natural items (think - flowers, leaves). Perhaps the feature that most inspires self-expression will be the stage. Constructed from natural materials, the stage will serve as a platform for children to deliver impromptu songs, speeches, and plays. They will have the opportunity to re-enact literature they encounter in the classroom.

We understand that Psi Iota Xi has a deep commitment to supporting the fields of literacy, speech, music, and the arts. We at Northside share each and every one of these passions and strive each day to incorporate them into the daily experience of our little ones. A Gift of Love would be put to great use in developing the aforementioned features and, in doing so, would enhance the education and development of the hundreds of children that come to us each day. We sincerely appreciate your considering us for your generous giving.

Why should YOUR chapter have its own email address?
  1. All PIX communications will be centralized into one mailbox. ONE dedicated email account for all communications instead of multiple personal email addresses.
  2. Address will stay the same even when the president and/or treasurer changes. No communications will be lost because National was not made aware of an address change or update.
  3. Chapter controls password and access so only the president, treasurer and whomever they choose can have access to the chapter's email. The password can be changed when officers change to protect access.
  4. Streamlines communications from National to all chapters. Nothing will be missed because someone did not read her email.
Contact  Heather Mitchell, National Editor, for details about establishing your chapter's new email address.
Helicon
Each chapter receives two Helicons. If your chapter would like to purchase more please let me know. The cost is $4 per Helicon.

She attended Ball State University, where she graduated in 1942 with a B.A. degree in Education; afterwards, she began a teaching career in South Bend at the same South Bend Central HS. On April 18, 1943, Mary Jane married Richard (Dick) Huff of South Bend, who preceded her in death (October, 2013). Mary Jane was active in the Presbyterian churches she and Dick attended during their more than 70 years of marriage. She was a lifelong leader and participant in Garden Clubs, Book Clubs, Bible studies and bridge games.
After moving to West Lafayette after her husband's death, Mary Jane enjoyed time with her daughter, Kathy; granddaughter, Elizabeth, and her family, who lovingly referred to her as "GiGi", short for Great Grandma; grandson, Brian. During her few years in the West Lafayette area, she enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, time with friends, trips to various community events, and Purdue Women's basketball games.
Mary Jane is survived by her son, Alan Huff (wife, Pam) of Eugene, OR; her daughter, Kathy Lafuse of West Lafayette, IN; her daughter, Jenifer McCoy (husband, Cary) of Columbus, GA; her son, Fred Huff of Atlanta, GA.
