Trip to the Metropolitan Opera
I have been blessed to attend the Central Region Finals competition, in Chicago for several years. This is where the National Project Chair presents a check to the second place winner of the competition, held in November. There are also competitions held in Indiana (now at Circle Theatre in Indianapolis), and in Cincinnati, Ohio. Our Project Representative, David O'Connor, encourages you all to support any of these competitions, by attending and showing your support for these aspiring young performers. I went to an Indiana competition a few years ago, when it was on the IU Bloomington campus, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The young man (who I picked to win) won, and was a finalist at Chicago as well!
Reginald Smith, Jr., the young man in the picture with PNP's, Kim Crawley, Pat Kugler and myself, on the front page of our website, has also gone on to compete in the New York finals and is doing very well. Mr. O'Connor encouraged me to attend the Finals competition concert, in New York City. If you follow me on Facebook, you know I did just that this year! I had an awesome time! There were 9 finalists, from the regional competitions all over the country. They competed in NYC the week before, and were finalists from a group of about 25. The young soloists ranged in age from 21 to 30 and had to compete in the Metropolitan Opera House, at Lincoln Center, without a microphone, projecting over the Met Opera symphony!
Pictured below is: L-R, David O'Connor, Susie Lewis, Eric Owens, (Bass-baritone) Guest artist. A winner 20 years ago, Eric performed while the judges made their final decision. Five of the nine finalists won and will be offered positions with the Met. I spent the rest of the evening visiting with David, his friends and co-workers with the Chicago organization, as well as a young couple, who met when competing in Chicago, married and are now employed and working with the Met. Who wants to go with me next year?

Convention News
Convention is now less than 3 months away
Your chapter should have received, both by mail and electronically, the registration packet with all the appropriate forms and information. There is a large block of rooms at the Marriott, at $139 each, and 10 rooms at both the Fairfield Inn and LaQuinta, which are on the same property. PLEASE ask for the Psi Iota Xi block of rooms, so they are available to you and count toward our block for convention.
Beta Pi, Cambridge City, will host our Welcome Party, on Friday night, from 8 to 10 pm. Bring your electronic devices and plan to have an awesome time!
There will be four workshops as a part of convention this year. We plan to have a "Gaming" workshop, from the podium, as a part of convention. We plan to have another "Treasurers" workshop, for those who were unable to attend any of the workshops last fall, as well as anyone who is interested in being a treasurer or would like to have some exposure to the PCR and electronic ledger to accomplish it. There will also be a Parliamentary Procedure workshop, hosted by Ed Frazer, our Parliamentarian, and an "Officer's Duties" workshop, hosted by your national officers.
PSI IOTA XI CHARMS are now available, from the national jeweler. They will have them at the Indiana state meeting, as well as national convention. With a bylaw change a couple years ago, youare now able to wear our Psi Iota Xi pin as a charm on a necklace!
If your chapter would like to donate an item/basket/money to be used toward convention raffles, please bring them to the Indiana state meeting on the 23rd. Alpha Chi members will be glad to take them from there!

How Many Have Been Blessed to Serve on National Council for 11 Years?
I only know of one in recent history, and her name is Cathy Etzler. I am lucky enough to have followed Cathy on National Council for the last seven years. Cathy's first convention was at the same location as this year's convention, the Indianapolis Marriott East. She will move from the Head table to the PNP table at the same location that she walked on to the Head table for the first time. Cathy has been such a blessing as a Psi Ote Sister. She has shared her talent of crocheting with so many of us, drawing each year for one of her Council sisters to receive a specially hand-made afghan from her. I was lucky enough to get one last summer! When she was national president, last year, she crocheted each of us a scarf, as well as "pot holders" or dish clothes for the kitchen. At our Spring National Council meeting, Cathy asked to present a prayer shawl she had made, to Beth Keeney, to show her/our support to Beth following her recent surgery.
Thanks for ALL of your CONTRIBUTIONS to Psi Iota Xi over the last eleven years, Cathy!

As the year winds down, I wanted to pass on an acronym that I saw for the word SPIRIT. Because at this time of the year our projects are over, we have put in many woman-hours, and sometimes we as chapters don't have the get-up-and-go to do something new. We need our spirits rejuvenated. Here are some thoughts:
S-Solutions - I envision Convention and all the activities and ideas shared as the solution for our planning for 2016-2017.
P-Possibilities - There are so many people and children in this world to help. The possibilities are endless.
I-Investment - Attending convention and meeting others is an investment your chapter is making for their success.
R-Resources - Endless possibilities, other chapters, national officers, district officers, and your own communities.
I-Impact - This is an immeasurable concept. You, as an individual PIX member, will never know how many individuals you have impacted by your chapter's projects and funding.
T-Teamwork - We always have been and always will be a team. - ALL of US TOGETHER. This is how success happens.
So as Convention draws near, please set goals to obtain the most information that can be of help for your chapter in the 2016-2017 year. Attend convention and rejuvenate your SPIRIT.

Chapter News
News from Beta Tau, Frankfort, IN
In 1997 Rae Harris was the National President and Beta Tau chapter hosted the National Convention at the Hyatt in downtown Indianapolis.
The chapter was very blessed to receive funds from raffles and other money making projects. Then came the "joy" of deciding how the money earned from the membership would be spent. This is a good "problem" to have. Beta Tau spent some of the money on the Paul Phillippe Resource Center, our local senior citizens center. Beta Tau sponsors a meeting room where we hold our regular meetings. In the daytime seniors play cards, work puzzles and enjoy spending time together. Beta Tau painted the room, purchased new window treatments and carpet. The room makes both organizations proud.
With the rest of the money, Beta Tau began a Speech & Hearing Scholarship administered through the Clinton County and Howard County Community Foundation. The fund is set up in the name of Beta Tau Chapter of Psi Iota Xi. This scholarship is awarded to a female attending graduate school in Speech Language Pathology.
There have been four recipients of the scholarship with two of those being from Clinton County, where Beta Tau was formed back in 1936. Each recipient received the scholarship for the entire time of their graduate education.
This year we were pleased to welcome our most recent recipient, Tenley Catron Adams, to speak to us about her education. She and her mother, Jean Catron, attended our January meeting. Tenley went to Purdue and earned her bachelor degree. She is a student at IU for her graduate work. Presently, she is interning at Blue Ridge Primary school, Frankfort, IN in Clinton County for ten weeks. She will also work at a medical facility for ten weeks. She has worked with people from ages 3-78 and has been involved with developmental preschools in Indianapolis. She is excited about her career path and thanked us for the scholarship.
This scholarship allows Beta Tau the opportunity to keep helping young women in the field of speech and hearing. It allows us to use the funds the members of Psi Iota Xi helped us to earn at the '97 National Convention. In turn, this scholarship helps a graduate student pursue their education in the spirit of our founding charter members way back in 1897. And so, the tradition continues and this gift will last forever to keep our legacy going in Psi Iota Xi.
News from Eta Sigma, Grand Rapids, MI
Eta Sigma Chapter has assisted the Children's Assessment Center in Grand Rapids, MI for several years. The Children's Assessment Center (CAC) assesses, supports, and cares for victims of suspected sexual assault, ages newborn to 18 years. They combine law enforcement, children's protective services, forensic interviewers, medical staff, assessment, counseling and advocacy functions into one location to support these children in a safe environment.
Over the years, Eta Sigma members have donated hundreds of journals which are used in the therapy for CAC clients. We have also made fleece blankets which are given to children who must undergo medical exams at CAC. These blankets are the child's to keep forever, which brings so much comfort to them.
This year, Eta Sigma members have increased our commitment to CAC by donating more journals and blankets. We also spent an evening on site to assemble teaching materials for their "KIDZ Have Rights" program which teaches body safety to more than 13,000 children yearly in K-4th grades throughout Kent County. Eta Sigma members also spent another evening assembling materials for their fundraising campaign.
Many of our sisters purchased items from CAC's Christmas Wish List, including blankets, journals, boots for children and moms, Legos and candles for Christmas gifts.
Eta Sigma's relationship with CAC has been rewarding for both groups. CAC is appreciative of our time and talents and we are happy to help the smallest of those among us in need.

New Calendar at www.psiiotaxi.org
Have you seen the new addition to the National Website? All Chapter Presidents, State Presidents and National Council members can log in and add events to the calendar.
Updated Bylaws can be found on the website. Click here to go there now.
Now Available - YourChapter@psiiotaxi.org
Why should YOUR chapter have its own email address?
- All PIX communications will be centralized into one mailbox. ONE dedicated email account for all communications instead of multiple personal email addresses.
- Address will stay the same even when the president and/or treasurer changes. No communications will be lost because National was not made aware of an address change or update.
- Chapter controls password and access so only the president, treasurer and whomever they choose can have access to the chapter's email. The password can be changed when officers change to protect access.
- Streamlines communications from National to all chapters. Nothing will be missed because someone did not read her email.
Contact Heather Mitchell, National Editor, for details about establishing your chapter's new email address.
Helicon
Each chapter receives two Helicons. If your chapter would like to purchase more please let me know. The cost is $4 per Helicon.
Thank you to those of you who have supplied me chapter member email addresses to update. If your chapter members are not registered on the website please send me their email addresses and I will get them their log in credentials.
