Notes from the Phone Booth

Convention registration packets were mailed Thursday and should be in the mailbox of your Chapter President now.  Copies of all of the forms will also be available on the website soon.  Please make your hotel reservations early to insure availability.

One of the most important considerations this time of year is, "How much can my chapter donate to the Long Term Project?"  The end of our Psi Ote fiscal year is drawing near.  Please reach out to your chapter members and discuss the potential for any Project Funds remaining to go toward our Long Term Project, the Stuttering Clinic at the University of Toledo.

As we look to the beginning of Spring this month please be sure to reach out to your National Council members with any questions or concerns you might have.  Invite us to your meetings, socials and public functions.  We love to see what you are all doing in your communities!  My traveling "rest" is over as of this week.  Hopefully, so is the snow!  Next Saturday is the Kentucky State Association meeting, and I will finally be able to attend.  The weather forecast looks very positive.  The next weekend is our Spring National Council meeting at the hotel where we will have convention this year.  It is always a joy to get back together with each other after the "dry spell" since the previous meeting.  I am going to "ditch" them in the middle of the night and escape to the airport....to go to New York City....and attend the Metropolitan Opera Finals concert on Sunday afternoon!  I will be sure to share and post pictures and highlights of the trip.  I also plan to visit a couple chapters in between those two weekend events.

Alpha Honored 100-Year-Old
"Golden Honorary Active" Member, Betty Kendall
Alpha Chapter, Muncie, celebrated the 100th birthday of 68-year "Golden Honorary" Active member, Betty Kendall at their February luncheon meeting.  They were serenaded by the men's a cappella group, "Note to Self" from Ball State University.
She's truly a Valentine, as her birthday is on February 14th!

Convention Clues and Cues

Without a doubt, IT IS TIME TO BE DISCUSSING Convention 2016!  Who is going from your chapter?  Consider setting goals as to what you will gain from this Convention.
Now... you may say, "Well, it is the Convention Host chapter that sets the agenda, meetings, and workshops for those days."  Yes. You are correct. This is a huge statement, and what your chapter will GAIN from Convention is defined by what your attendees decide they will TAKE BACK to the chapter from their CONVENTION EXPERIENCE.
Every year National tries to plan according to the wishes of our membership, and the ENERGY that YOU bring to Convention will set the TONE as to what BENEFITS you take home from this event.

As Dr. Phil says, I am going to start my sentences with VERBS:

  • Know a little of our history and for sure inform a first-time attendee of some of this history.
  • Require each of your attendees to talk to ten different women from different chapters and learn something new from each of them.
  • Find out about a new fundraiser.
  • Listen intently about our National Projects and take this information home. Share it with your chapter.  Each individual member of Psi Iota Xi has a community, state and worldly effect.
  • Challenge yourselves, for at least one meal, to all sit at different tables to absorb the sisterhood and more and more ideas.
  • Plan to purchase PIX items in the Salesroom that are unique, special and at the same time helping other chapters financially through your purchases.
  • Communicate with chapters in your District.  Many activities can be planned in cooperation with another chapter.
  • Pick up 2-3 helpful hints for your officers through networking with your PIX Sisters in other cities.
I would challenge all chapters to attend Convention.  Fines for not attending are paid for each missing delegate each day.  It is the best way we have to control attendance.  Any money for a FINE would be better spent in YOUR COMMUNITY.

Attendance has remained steady the last few years. Let's shoot to break attendance records for Convention 2016!

Update from Theta Kappa

NL032016
The Theta Kappa Chapter of Edon Ohio hosted the 111th National Convention for Psi Iota Xi in June 2014 at the Grand Wayne Convention Center in Fort Wayne Indiana. Fundraising commenced in advance and throughout convention to meet the obligations that go with financing such an undertaking.  Proceeds from the convention raffles were designated to go back into our community within the scope of art, literature/literacy, music, or speech and hearing.
In 2015 Theta Kappa requested a wish list of instruments from the local Edon Schools Music Director as they planned to donate an instrument as part of our annual philanthropic giving program.  Ms. Perry, the Director, submitted a prioritized list of 5 instruments within a wide price range as she did not know the amount of our budget.
During half time of a home basketball game in January 2016 Theta Kappa invited everyone who was a member (past or present) to join them on the floor for an important announcement.  Of course, we went around the gym ahead of time and personally invited many former members who gladly joined us. Then they surprised the Band Director by calling her
Marcia Mohre
out of the pep band in the bleachers to join them all on the floor for a ceremony.  She was taken by complete surprise as we presented her a check for the 1st instrument on her list --- and then the 2nd --- the 3rd and finally 4 of the 5 instruments.  We funded 4 instruments - not just one - and she was beyond words!  Theta Kappa has supported our local music department throughout the years and we certainly plan to continue!  We are proud to make such a significant impact in the field of music and in the lives of our students!

From Alpha, Muncie's 1948 Program book -
Here is how the Opening Verse read at that point:
"As a loyal member of Psi Iota Xi, I believe in furthering charitable enterprises and studying the best literature and music and in developing myself socially, morally, and intellectually."

Here is the Closing Verse:
"It is a noble thing to give cheer to those less fortunate about you; therefore be of good cheer and those about you shall receive some of it."

In 1946 the PCR was called the "Annual Inspection and Secretary Report."
It was all on one page, 8 ½ by 14" long.
A question in the report was, "Do you have a strong box?  Is it in order? Are these articles in it:  Rituals, membership books, Bibles, Shield, Constitution, Charter, Bylaws?"
Questions making up the report:
  • Achievement cup - Total spent on charity exclusive of Grand fees
  • Charity:  Amount spent per capita of active members on local charity during the year, regardless when money was earned
  • What have been your charitable activities the past year?
  • Methods employed to earn Charity money
  • Programs, public or private which chapter has sponsored
  • Social and literary activities
  • Number of symphony tickets purchased
  • Amount of money contributed to Symphony Maintenance Fund

The Deaf Youth Sports Festival, Inc - MDO

The Deaf Youth Sports Festival (MDO), is a program that serves exclusively Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) Youth ages 5 through High School whose access to organized sports during the regular school year is often restricted or non-existent due to communication barriers, limited school budgets for interpreters/accommodations, and at risk socio-economic status.  MDO offers these youth an opportunity to learn about and participate in organized competitive sports, often D/HH children's first exposure, and provides equity with their hearing peers.  By challenging D/HH Youth to discover their potential through organized sporting competitions and directed activities they learn valuable communication, leadership, and social skills to enhance their ability to become proactive members in their communities.

Throughout MDO's history we have served D/HH children with a wide variety of communication styles.  It is our belief that every child's mode of communication is to be respected and accepted.  It is our goal to provide a safe, barrier-free communication environment where the child will feel comfortable using their preferred mode of communication as well as a stimulating environment where the child will be challenged to explore the many ways all people communicate.

Participants are encouraged to try every sport.  Many return to their schools and join an athletic program for the first time, overcoming their inhibitions about their capabilities as a result of their MDO experience.

Our objectives are to:
1.  Build healthy habits that encourage life-long participation in physical activity;
2.  Develop the entire individual, not only technical sports skills;
3.  Instill key values such as honesty, teamwork, fair play, respect (self and others), adherence to rules, coping skills (winning and losing).

MDO makes every effort to accept all D/HH children who apply, regardless of economic status.  Having recently relocated from the campus of the University of Louisville, to the campus of the Indiana School for the Deaf, MDO is in the process of establishing a donor base in Indiana.  The MDO Core Committee of Directors conducts fundraising year round through local restaurants and other events.  Relationships have been established with foundations as well as with parents and families of D/HH children who attend.  MDO has several families that make memorial donations, and MDO volunteers are asked to make whatever donation they can afford.  MDO is proud that in 33 years we have continued to have an ALL-volunteer Core Committee of Directors and staff so that 100% of the funds raised can be applied to the program and directly benefit D/HH children!

The MDO Core Committee of Directors is immensely appreciative of the generosity of Psi Iota Xi and their continued support.  The benefactors of your philanthropy are the Deaf and Hard of Hearing children who are our future leaders.  Thank You!

New Newsletter format
For this issue I have chosen a mobile friendly format. More and more of us are reading our emails on mobile devices.

Updated Bylaws can be found on the website. Click here to go there now.

Now Available - YourChapter@psiiotaxi.org
Why should YOUR chapter have its own email address?
  1. All PIX communications will be centralized into one mailbox. ONE dedicated email account for all communications instead of multiple personal email addresses.
  2. Address will stay the same even when the president and/or treasurer changes. No communications will be lost because National was not made aware of an address change or update.
  3. Chapter controls password and access so only the president, treasurer and whomever they choose can have access to the chapter's email. The password can be changed when officers change to protect access.
  4. Streamlines communications from National to all chapters. Nothing will be missed because someone did not read her email.
Contact  Heather Mitchell, National Editor, for details about establishing your chapter's new email address.
Helicon
Each chapter receives two Helicons. If your chapter would like to purchase more please let me know. The cost is $4 per Helicon.

Thank you to those of you who have supplied me chapter member email addresses to update. If your chapter members are not registered on the website please send me their email addresses and I will get them their log in credentials.
