Tricks or Treats?
What will you and your chapter see this month - TRICKs or TREATs?
My chapter will be doing a "Homemade Item Auction" at one of our two meetings. It is a real TREAT to see what all the ladies bring and how much fun we all have trying to outbid each other for a fundraiser for the GENERAL FUND. Psi Ote ladies are so talented and crafty! National Council is looking forward to sharing all the tips and TRICKS for chapter treasurers at the three Treasurer's Workshops to be held this month. Kaye Robison, past NEDO will be leading the workshops that will educate all attenders on ways to keep the chapters' financial records and complete our year-end financial reports more easily. Please see details in the separate article. Is your chapter doing something fun this month - either as a celebration TREAT for the arrival of Fall, or coming in costume to your chapter meeting? Send pictures to Heliconheather@hotmail.com so they can be included in the newsletter. It's early in our Psi Iota Xi year. How about the TREAT of a donation to the Long Term Project? I am sure the Stuttering Clinic at the University of Toledo, and Dr. Gabel would certainly appreciate it! Make checks payable to the "Long Term Project" Fund. You could save a stamp and even include it with your Fee statement and check to the National Treasurer. She can forward it to Pat Menge, National Project Chair. All chapters should have received their FEE STATEMENT in the mail. These were included in a mailing to the chapter president. Presidents - please pass the statement on to your treasurer as these are due by November 1st to Beth Keeney, National Treasurer. It is truly a TREAT to serve on National Council. If you would like to serve our organization and join this wonderful group of ladies, please contact Brenda Bonner, National Vice President to let her know of your interest before November 1st. Brenda is also the national officer that receives any national bylaw proposals. These are due to her by November 1st.

9 National Council members, 2 Indiana State Association officers, 1 Kentucky State officer and 4 other Psi Iota Xi sisters enjoyed a tour of the hospital, given by Kate Bonner, our Riley Foundation representative. Following the tour we worked on creating scrapbook pages for parents of infants in the NICU. A hospital volunteer explained to us what type of layout to use for pages for either boys, girls or ultrasound pictures. This would also be a great activity for chapters as a program at a meeting. Pages could then be sent (or delivered by hand) to Riley. Contact National President, Susie Lewis, for more information.

Susan Albers, Pam Schankerman, and Cheryl Brown of Alpha Lambda, Zionsville pose behind all of the scrapbook pages they created.

Van Riper Lectures Series
The annual Van Riper Lectures Series was created in 1981 upon the retirement of Dr. Charles Van Riper, founder of the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at Western Michigan University. Dr. Van Riper wanted to provide students in the department an opportunity to learn from experts in communication disorders each year. The Lectures are also open to professionals in communication disorders, who benefit from hearing researchers and clinicians talk about best practices in specific areas of speech-language and hearing. In recent years the Lectures have been streamed to university and work sites across Michigan and in northern Indiana, to provide access to nationally-known speakers without the need to travel to Kalamazoo.
Psi Iota Xi has sponsored the Van Riper Lectures since 2003, with funding supporting the expenses related to bringing nationally-recognized researchers and clinicians to campus for our students and the community. This year the $3,000 donation from Psi Iota Xi helped us bring to campus Dr. Robert Sweetow, University of California San Francisco, for a day-long presentation on the topic of tinnitus, and Dr. Cathy Lazarus, Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital in New York City, for a day-long presentation about the evidence base in evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders.
The support of the Van Riper Lectures by Psi Iota Xi is viewed by the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology as an investment in the education of future speech -language and hearing professionals, as well as promoting lifelong learning for professionals in the community. We believe that Psi Iota Xi and Western Michigan University are seen as leaders in promoting education about best practices in communication disorders in the Midwest, where most of our graduates work after graduation. Your support is highly valued!

The date, time and location has been set for three different Treasurer's Workshops in October.
PLEASE plan to attend at the most convenient location. Bring someone else in your chapter along with you so they can learn this also. National Council is seriously encouraging chapters to have an Assistant Treasurer. These will begin promptly at 10 am. We should be done about noon. If anyone wants additional help or has more questions, we will work with you. Please bring your laptop with you. You will receive a thumb drive with all the materials pre-loaded. We will work directly with these during the workshop. If you do not have or use a laptop, there will also be hard copies available. PLEASE ALSO bring your checkbook or ledger so far this year, if available, so you can enter and work with these figures. October 3rd - at the Remax in Bedford, 3315 5th St, (corner of 37 and IN 58 East). Contact for that location will be Connie McDaniel, Nat. Secretary, at 812.583.3509
October 10th - Northern Indiana Community Foundation, 715 Main St, in Rochester. (Parking may be difficult here, as there is another event in the area, so plan to have to walk a little farther to the building.)
Contact for this location will be Andrea English, NWDO, at 219.863.5784. October 17th - National Office, 3905 Vincennes Rd, Indianapolis (just off Michigan Rd, across from the Pyramids) (3rd Floor, all the way to the LEFT) Contact for this location will be Susie Lewis, National President, at 765.400.0749 Safe travels and we hope to see you THERE!

That's what we are going to find out at the Treasurer's Workshops, to be held in October, in three different locations. All Treasurers are asked to make EVERY effort to attend. It will be a tutoring and training session on how easy it CAN be to do your chapter's financials each year. If you are unable to attend in your area, you can attend one of the other two sessions. National Council would like to move toward all chapter treasurers being able to use the electronic ledger, or the same style of reporting and ledger system in an effort to make the completion of end-of-the-year reports more standard throughout the organization. Feel free, also, to send anyone from the chapter interested in the treasurer's position in the future.

Washington DC Chapter
Did you know there was once a chapter in Washington DC? Delta Chi was installed in 1947. The chapter consisted of ladies who had belonged to Psi Iota Xi prior to moving to the nation's capital.
Here are a couple paragraphs from the 1948 Helicon: "Hoosiers in Washington Believe in Organizing" by Marjorie Binford Woods Washington, Feb. 14 - Hoosiers in Washington are quite unlike the cynic who glibbed that she "would rather see her dentist, a psychiatrist or thug-than meet up with a woman who had the 'organizing' bug. One glimpse at the long lists of acceptances for the Indiana Women's luncheon, being held this weekend at the Washington Hotel, proves that Mrs. Madge Ballard, the organizer for the affair, is being sought after, rather than shunned, as "the promoter."

Updating Chapter and National Bylaws
In an effort to maintain IRS regulatory compliance, National Council is asking that all chapters send a copy of their current bylaws to us (if you have not already done so). National Council also continues to encourage all chapters, in an effort to simplify guidance and communication, to move toward only having "Standing Rules" for your chapter and adopting our organization's National Bylaws as Chapter Bylaws. Standing Rule # 1 would be, "_____________ chapter of Psi Iota Xi has adopted the organization's National Bylaws as our Chapter Bylaws." If your chapter cannot approve this, and has any changes to bylaws this year, please get them to me for approval by April 1st of 2016.
Please submit any recommendations for changes in our National Bylaws to Brenda Bonner, National Vice President, prior to November 1st. These need to be a recommendation from your chapter. The National Bylaw Committee will be meeting to consider these and any other amendment considerations, in mid-November as a part of our Winter Council meeting.
How to Be a Bigger Part of Psi Iota Xi
We are looking for District Officers! If you are interested in a District Officer position please let me know of your interest before November 1st. The sooner the better as Council meets mid-November and will be voting on the slate of officers at that time. Not sure? Call me or send me an email to discuss your thoughts. If your District's officer position is not "vacant" this year, I would be glad to pass your name on to officers following me on National Council. Please submit your letter of interest, ALONG WITH a letter of support from your chapter, to:
Brenda Bonner, National Vice President 990 E 50 N Flora, IN 46929 You can also send information electronically, to Nationalvicepresident@psiiotaxi.org. Your National Vice President also names those who will serve on national committees next year. Please let me know if you would like to serve on any of the following committees: *Future Planning (meets in August) *Project Screening (meets in January) *Nominating (email communication only) If you submitted a survey at National Convention, I already have your name and interest, but please feel free to contact me again to confirm.

How Omega Celebrated Their 2014-2015 Highlights
The Omega chapter in Lebanon met on June 23rd at the Ulen Country Club for their initiation. Forty members, including some Auxiliary members, were in attendance. Two legacies, Allie O'Roarke and Nora Lee were initiated along with Anita Bowen and Holly Bland. They recognized Marsha Mossman. Marsha is going inactive after 63 years of active Service to Psi Iota Xi. She was presented a gift and gave the group a few words of advice and thanks. Janet Freshour and Jean Acton, sisters who have been active for 50 years, were presented with 50 year certificates and 50 year pin guards. Each year Omega recognizes the member they chose for the Psi Ote of the Year from their chapter. This year they presented Brenda Dukes with this honor and a plaque. There was a delicious meal. Sallie Everett sang songs for the entertainment. The Omega chapter has a choir to sing the initiation songs. Carolyn Blubaugh from the Alpha Zeta chapter in Thorntown played the piano. At the end everyone held hands in a circle and sang the National Song. It was a lovely evening of sisterhood.

Updated Bylaws can be found on the website. Click here to go there now.
I would like to thank everyone who signed up for
YourChapter@psiiotaxi.org during our National convention.
In case you missed it:
Now Available - Chapter email addresses
Why should YOUR chapter have its own email address?
- All PIX communications will be centralized into one mailbox. ONE dedicated email account for all communications instead of multiple personal email addresses.
- Address will stay the same even when the president and/or treasurer changes. No communications will be lost because National was not made aware of an address change or update.
- Chapter controls password and access so only the president, treasurer and whomever they choose can have access to the chapter's email. The password can be changed when officers change to protect access.
- Streamlines communications from National to all chapters. Nothing will be missed because someone did not read her email.
Contact Heather Mitchell, National Editor, for details about establishing your chapter's new email address.
Each chapter will receive two Helicons. If your chapter would like to purchase more please let me know by September 30, 2015. The cost will be $4 per Helicon.
Thank you to those of you who have supplied me chapter member email addresses to update. If your chapter members are not registered on the website please send me their email addresses and I will get them their log in credentials.
