Notes from the Phone Booth
I hope to see many of you at Riley Hospital on the 19th, to celebrate our Founder's Day by making scrapbook pages for parents of children in the NICU. Plan to stay from 10 to 1. Meet in the Outpatient lobby. Parking is available in the adjacent parking lot, on Riley Hospital Dr, just off of Michigan Street.
Attention Treasurers!
The annual Fee statements have been included in a large mailing to all chapter presidents. Please make sure to check with your president. They are due by November 1st.
News from National Council -
At our Summer Council meeting in August, National Council approved to no longer recognize Volunteer Service Hours as an award at convention. That page will no longer be included in the PCR and there is no need to track them any longer unless you want to have some type of recognition in your chapter. Through the years there has been much confusion as to what qualifies for Volunteer Service Hours.
Long Term Project update -
Psi Iota Xi has contributed $43,000 toward our Long Term Project so far. What can your chapter do to help us cross the $50,000 mark? There are several ways to raise funds toward this worthwhile project. What chapter can come up with the most creative fundraiser? Get your thinking caps on!
Convention 2016 Notes -
After two great conventions in Fort Wayne, we move back to Indianapolis in June of 2016. Remember what happens in Indianapolis? We have to pay for the cost of the meeting rooms through our meal expense. The cost of meals will be much more expensive than they were in Fort Wayne. Please consider doing General Fund fundraisers throughout the year to allow enough "cushion" in your General Fund to help pay for convention for as many as would like to attend. Registration information will come out in early Spring. There will be a Welcome Party again this year, so please plan to come in on Friday night and enjoy the extra time fellowshipping with your Psi Ote sisters! Look back at last month's newsletter, or contact a member of National Council if you would like some ideas for making money for your General Fund.
National Council Summer Council meeting -
National Council had their Summer meeting at the national office the 8th and 9th of August. The Future Planning committee met first in the morning, then joined Council for lunch.
NL092015 After the Future Planning meeting and lunch, I surprised National Council with a "field trip" to St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf, which just happens to be only two blocks from the National Office. Marty Krug, Iota Tau, Indianapolis, gave us a tour, as well as a list of potential items we can donate. (see separate newsletter article)

NL092015 Fun and work in one as I made a matching game and asked District Officers to partner with another officer and match the chapter Greek name with the correct city in each of their districts. How many can you match? SWDO, Mo Dix, and National Treasurer, Beth Keeney were the first to complete the challenge.

President Susie's Travels -
NL092015  After our Council weekend, I headed north to Knox to visit a shrimp farm with the Iota Zeta chapter. One of the member's son and his wife own and manage this unique business in a rural area of the state. Ever seen a shrimp jump from the palm of someone's hand? We all did that evening!
NL092015 On the 13th I headed east to Ohio to celebrate with Theta Zeta, Fort Recovery following their great convention and for their 45th anniversary. Rhonda McNall-Crisenbury, EC District Officer attended as well.
NL092015

The third weekend in August is always Hagerstown's "Jubilee Days" festival. On Friday evening there was a Ruth Ann Seffrin Memorial concert at the Arts Place. Ruth Ann was a very active Honorary Active Psi Ote that we lost late last Spring. She was very active in supporting the "Arts Place." Alpha Chi has donated funds to the Arts Place each year. We wanted to make a special donation in honor of Ruth Ann and did so at the concert by donating a violin that can be used for lessons at the Arts Place. Pictured are the Psi Otes in attendance and the owner of the Arts Place, Tom Butters, and the musical director, Anita Crull.

At the end of the newsletter you will find that one of our beloved Past National Presidents, Peg Burns, from Eta Gamma, Valparaiso, passed away in late August. I was able to join four of our Past National Presidents and travel to attend her service.
NL092015
The last week of the month had me going back to Indianapolis for a Manager Rally for work. I manage a TCC store, which is an agent for Verizon Wireless. The owner of our company, Scott Moorehead, presented a $1,000,000 check to Riley Hospital as a part of our rally. We all were to dress as super heroes and surrounded the hospital, giving it a big "hug." Kevin O'Keefe, the President of the Riley Foundation, was outside to speak to us and I went up and shook his hand and introduced myself as the National President of Psi Iota Xi, while wearing a "Master Splinter" costume from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Pictured with me is Scott Moorehead, owner of TCC (previously The Cellular Connection). His parents, Steve and Phyllis Moorehead, began Moorehead Communications in Marion, and went into the Cellular business in the early 1990's. Phyllis was in the Marion Psi Iota Xi chapter.

Psi Iota Xi Founder's Day - September 19th, 1897

Please join us on Saturday, September 19th, in honor of our Founder's Day, at Riley Hospital for a tour and a volunteer effort of making simple scrapbook pages for parents of patients.  Please bring scrapbook pages and paper.  Infant and small child patterns would be very appropriate.  We will meet in the Outpatient Center at 10:00 am.
NL092015
From our Riley Foundation project representative, Kate Bonner, "Our Riley NICU places a great emphasis on providing parent support through emotional, educational and peer support tools. You can get a feel for what they do and read some wonderful testimony from Riley families here: http://www.nicunest.org/
One project they are in great need of support for, is a memory-making scrapbook project. Scrapbook page templates created by staff and volunteers offer parents the opportunity to take a few minutes to celebrate their babies and make memories even though they are in the hospital.
What Psi Iota Xi will help with, is bringing scrapbook supplies to the hospital, where we will create very basic scrapbook page templates for parents to personalize on their own. The NICU requests simple, colorful, non-denominational scrapbook paper and stickers. Feel free to collect baby-related styles!
Additional needs in case chapters would like to collect more items: cameras and photo printers for use by the staff, children's books (board books, not paper), and monetary donations to sustain the scrapbook supplies."
Those interested in attending should park in the Riley Outpatient parking garage, just off W Michigan St, on Riley Hospital Drive and meet in the Outpatient Lobby at 10:00 am. We will have a tour, work on the scrapbook pages, and finish around 1:00. Come enjoy this time of volunteer effort for Riley. There's plenty more time for sisterhood to be shared during lunch and shopping in Indianapolis afterward!

Hoosier Salon Annual Exhibition

Are you looking for a fun outing for your chapter? Consider a visit to the Hoosier Salon's 91st Annual Exhibition located in the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center in Indianapolis. The exhibit is open through September 26, 2015.
NL092015
Andrea Niedenthal, National Conductress, and Connie McDaniel, National Secretary, were honored to attend the 91st Annual Exhibition and Awards for the Hoosier Salon. Psi Iota Xi is proud to be a part of supporting Hoosier artists.
Visit their website at www.hoosiersalon.org for more information.

St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf (SJI)
is Indiana's first and only formal, comprehensive Listening and Spoken Language program.  SJI is dedicated to helping Indiana's children who are deaf or hard of hearing develop Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) skills commensurate with those of their hearing peers. Utilizing advanced technology, coupled with specialized therapy and education, the children we serve consistently meet or exceed appropriate language and educational milestones.

SJI offers a variety of programs for children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families, including early intervention services, a full-time preschool through second grade program, and ongoing consultation and therapy services for students attending their community schools. We also provide comprehensive educational and training opportunities for families and professionals. Through all these programs, SJI served more than 160 children across the state during the last school year.

The majority of our teaching supplies come from United Arts and Education. Gift cards to that store are always appreciated. Our teachers also love Scholastic Books - gift cards make it easy for them to pick the books they need. We have an ongoing need for Kleenex, Clorox wipes and baby wipes.

We have limited storage, but could use some good, used clothes for boys and girls sizes 3 - 7 (underwear, shirts, shorts, pants, socks, lightweight jackets, etc).
Let's Have a Card Shower!
This communication was received through the national website:
My mother, Mary Adele Miller, was the first Kentucky President of Psi Iota Xi. She was active in the sorority for many many years. She will turn 100 on September 10, 2015 . Her mind is wonderful, and although she is very well physically, she is bedridden in a nursing home in Louisville, KY. I was wondering if maybe someone in your PIX organization could send her 100th birthday greetings?
Her address is:

Greetings from the Indiana State Association

The Indiana Association wants to remind chapters that State Fees should be sent to State Treasurer Kim Benzing. Statements have been sent. They are required to be received or postmarked by November 1, 2015.

Indiana State Project Proposals and/or Rotating Grant applications are due to State Project Chair, Deedra Runyan. You will be receiving a letter and applications in September. They are required to be received or postmarked by November 15, 2015. It was noted at the 2015 State Meeting of some confusion on the Proposals verses the Rotating Grant. A Project Proposal is for a project that can be considered to help those in the state as a whole. The Rotating Grant could be used for a local project that doesn't fall into the category of a State Project. If you are only applying for the Rotating Grant, you do not have to fill out the Project Proposal application.

The Indiana Association website is www.indianapsiotes.org. Contact information for the 2015-2016 Board is available. We also have the updated Indiana State Bylaws and 2015 State Meeting Minutes posted. The Project Proposal letter and applications will be posted soon. We are looking at the evaluations from the State Meeting to see what we can add to the website. If you have any suggestions and did not attend the meeting, please let us know at our email: instatepix@gmail.com.

SAVE THE DATE - April 23, 2016, "Celebrating Psi Ote Success, "Greenfield Indiana hosted by Upsilon Greenfield
Historical Tidbit

Minutes from Psi Iota Xi's 25th Convention, in 1927
It was held at the Lincoln Hotel, in Indianapolis. The business session began on Thursday afternoon, with the singing of our national song, followed by the Lord's Prayer. All chapters responded to roll call. The minutes of the mid-year convention, and the grand officers meeting were read, corrected and approved.
The balance on hand in the General Fund was $1340.14 and the Charity Fund balance was $5039.24.
A decision on how to spend the remaining balance of the Charity Fund was suspended until Friday's business meeting. A report of chapter examination grades was read. Alpha (91), Iota (94), Sigma (93), Upsilon (95) and Pi (95), to name a few. Only one chapter scored lower than 90.

Updating Chapter and National Bylaws
In an effort to maintain IRS regulatory compliance, National Council is asking that all chapters send a copy of their current bylaws to us (if you have not already done so). National Council also continues to encourage all chapters, in an effort to simplify guidance and communication, to move toward only having "Standing Rules" for your chapter and adopting our organization's National Bylaws as Chapter Bylaws. Standing Rule # 1 would be, "_____________ chapter of Psi Iota Xi has adopted the organization's National Bylaws as our Chapter Bylaws." If your chapter cannot approve this, and has any changes to bylaws this year, please get them to me for approval by April 1st of 2016.
Please submit any recommendations for changes in our National Bylaws to Brenda Bonner, National Vice President, prior to November 1st. These need to be a recommendation from your chapter. The National Bylaw Committee will be meeting to consider these and any other amendment considerations, in mid-November as a part of our Winter Council meeting.

How to Be a Bigger Part of Psi Iota Xi
We are looking for District Officers! If you are interested in a District Officer position please let me know of your interest before November 1st. The sooner the better as Council meets mid-November and will be voting on the slate of officers at that time. Not sure? Call me or send me an email to discuss your thoughts. If your District's officer position is not "vacant" this year, I would be glad to pass your name on to officers following me on National Council. Please submit your letter of interest, ALONG WITH a letter of support from your chapter, to:
Brenda Bonner, National Vice President
990 E 50 N Flora, IN 46929
You can also send information electronically, to Nationalvicepresident@psiiotaxi.org.

Your National Vice President also names those who will serve on national committees next year. Please let me know if you would like to serve on any of the following committees:
*Future Planning (meets in August)
*Project Screening (meets in January)
*Nominating (email communication only)
If you submitted a survey at National Convention, I already have your name and interest, but please feel free to contact me again to confirm.

Brenda Bonner,
National Vice President

Ladies,I had a great evening at the National Convention in Fort Wayne. The tribute paid by Psi Iota Xi that evening was rather overwhelming but much appreciated. So much has happened since we first were a project of the Anderson Chapter. The project became a state, a national and eventually the centennial project. I have said at every opportunity that Psi Iota Xi was instrumental in helping bring to fruition one of the most significant developments in medicine. Who would have ever imagined that a sorority would have great influence on the FDA or NIH.
I have retired from my clinical responsibilities but since I Chaired the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery for 27 years, I have much to offer in ensuring a smooth transition going forward. I will continue to teach our medical students and residents. I am also continuing many of my national and international responsibilities.
Please share my sincere thanks with the national Council, all of the Past National Presidents, and the Anderson Chapter for initiating an unbelievable ride!
Sincerely yours,
Richard T. Miyamoto, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.P.

What does this diagram mean to you?
NL092015 That's what we are going to find out at the Treasurer's Workshops, to be held in October, in three different locations. All Treasurers are asked to make EVERY effort to attend. It will be a tutoring and training session on how easy it CAN be to do your chapter's financials each year. If you are unable to attend in your area, you can attend one of the other two sessions.
Please look for communications from your District Officer on locations and times. The dates will probably be October 3rd in the southern part of the state, 10th in the northern part of the state and October 17th at the national office in Indianapolis.
National Council would like to move toward all chapter treasurers being able to use the electronic ledger, or the same style of reporting and ledger system in an effort to make the completion of end-of-the-year reports more standard throughout the organization.
Feel free, also, to send anyone from the chapter interested in the treasurer's position in the future.

Chapter Highlights
NL092015 Beta Sigma Chapter member, Dot Caudell, won first prize for the Best Tomato Recipe at the local Materfest Festival July 25, 2015. Beta Sigma chapter sells homemade ice cream at local festivals as a fund-raiser for our projects. Dot's Ice Cream was called Tomato Ripple and it was very tasty!

I would like to thank everyone who signed up for
YourChapter@psiiotaxi.org during our National convention.

In case you missed it:

Now Available - Chapter email addresses

Why should YOUR chapter have its own email address?

  1. All PIX communications will be centralized into one mailbox. ONE dedicated email account for all communications instead of multiple personal email addresses.
  2. Address will stay the same even when the president and/or treasurer changes. No communications will be lost because National was not made aware of an address change or update.
  3. Chapter controls password and access so only the president, treasurer and whomever they choose can have access to the chapter's email. The password can be changed when officers change to protect access.
  4. Streamlines communications from National to all chapters. Nothing will be missed because someone did not read her email.

Contact  Heather Mitchell, National Editor, for details about establishing your chapter's new email address.

2015 Helicon
Each chapter will receive two Helicons. If your chapter would like to purchase more please let me know by September 30, 2015. The cost will be $4 per Helicon.

Website Registration
Thank you to those of you who have supplied me chapter member email addresses to update. If your chapter members are not registered on the website please send me their email addresses and I will get them their log in credentials.
