A Message From Your National President.

Community Service Month

April is designated as Community Service Month. I wanted to take a moment to thank all members for the service and time you have given to Psi Iota Xi and to your local communities in many ways. You donation of time and talent is immeasurable.

Just recently, I had a member say what is a PNP? This made me think that we need to fully orient our new members. I know that we use many acronyms and forget to explain (PNP, PCR, DO, etc. etc.) Past National President, Pre-Convention Report, District Officer.

I have decided to focus this month on a special group of women who have served and continue to serve us well at a local, district, state and national level. I cannot ever list the amount of knowledge, experience, and caring attitude that this group of women shares with all of us. I asked Sue Simpson, President of the Past National Presidents to collect a comment from Past National Presidents about their JOURNEY on National Council. Their comments were collected and appear at the end of this article.

When you are reading these positive comments, consider if you are to a point where you might be willing to serve on National Council or a committee, and let your District Officer know, so we can share your name and interest.

Before I end, I would like to give you my personal "take" on this group of ladies.

I have created my own acronyms for PNP:

PNP- Positively Neat People

PNP- Positively Nice People

PNP- Positively Needed People

PNP- Positively Nurturing People

Thank you all Past National Presidents for bringing your talents, personalities, and caring attitudes to this organization. We needed each one of you, and each one of you stepped forward to lead us. We will be forever indebted.

Cathy Etzler

National President

Past National Presidents

"When I reflect on my years on National Council, I smile, because it definitely enriched my life just as our organization enriches the lives of others. I treasure the lifelong friendships that came from those years."

Barbara Perkins PNP
Convention Year- 1985
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"My years on National Council were very rewarding. It was neat to see how much money could be raised to help those less fortunate. I am happy to say that I have been a part of a Million Dollar organization. "

Sara (Hoffman) Overway
Convention Year-2005
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"When I joined council in 1987, I didn't have the faintest idea of how my life would change. I was overjoyed and overwhelmed when Sharon White told me I would be President during our 100th Anniversary year. Needless to say my Beta Tau Chapter was more than surprised. With everyone pitching in, with great help from the 100th committee, the event was a success. Hopefully all who were there remember the moment when the Indianapolis Symphony played our National song and with tears flowing, our 100th concert concluded. What a year it was!! One I will always cherish. "
Rae Harris
Convention Year-1997
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Serving on Council not only made me a better planner, organizer and orator; it also gave me wonderful, lifetime friends. It amazes me that I stood behind the podium where so many wonderful women have stood. Sue, Delores, Martha, Mary, Karen, Barb, Margie, Shirley, Bette, Anita, Doris, Janet, Mary Helen, Lesley, Gladys, Clarice, Opal, Ven, Jule, Lillian, and Rae. I smile as I remember them. There soon will be 115 of them. Those years served on Council are indelible in my mind. At convention, I still get goosebumps when I hear the total amount of money that we spend on helping others. And to think that we are the oldest women's service organization in IN is amazing."
Sharon White
Convention Year-1989

Marcia Mohre "Serving on National Council allowed me to share "Serving on National Council allowed me to share time and ideas with an exciting and diverse group of Psi Otes. I learned to open my mind and heart and was challenged to think outside of my box and comfort zone."

"I was honored to represent an organization of women of character that allowed me the benefit of meeting fabulous people while accomplishing great philanthropic goals and having so much fun!"

Tula Tucker
Convention Year-1995

"My years on National Council were so much fun! The sisters that I got to know and the amazing work that we do as an organization! My Eta Xi Chapter did an awesome job of supporting me and putting on Convention 2007 in Fort Wayne! I will never forget my 10 years on Council and the fabulous sisters I got to know."
Sue Simpson

"Serving on National Council was a learning experience for me. From each position I learned new and exciting things that have enriched my life ever since. And the life-long friendships are...PRICELESS!"

Lesley Bookout
Convention Year-1988

"I remember seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time, its beauty and vastness was overwhelming. Serving as National President of Psi Iota Xi was very much like that experience. I was able to view and experience the beauty and vastness of our organization, not just the individual pieces. What a joy it was!"
Anna Jo McKaig
Convention Year- 2006

"As I am traveling this journey of life, I keep reuniting with Psi Otes I have met over the years, whether I am close to home or even in a foreign county. I have found that "Psi Ote Friendships Never End" and I cherish the associations that have I have made over the years."

Bette Yeager
Convention Year-1993
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The friendships you make while on Council last a lifetime. But I am most proud of all our members who worked hard to make our Professorship with Riley a reality."

Barbara Mitchel
Convention Year-1999
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Serving on National Council enriched my Psi Ote experience by giving me some very special sisters. Most of them became PNP's (although not all). All of them enrich my life through our friendships even though I usually only get to see them once a year at convention. We stay in touch thru e-mail and Facebook, still send cards, etc. All of my Psi Ote sisters are special but the PNP's have an extra special place in my heart."
Ramona Simpson
Convention Year-2001

"It was an honor to serve on National Council. Those nine years were busy meeting Psi Ote sisters, working together with chapters and National Council to make our organization stronger."

Sandy Clevenger
Convention Year-2000
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"1992 was an Apple-so-lutely wonderful Psi Iota Xi year. We were encouraged to network with chapters throughout our organization in the fields of Speech and Hearing and Music. Members are our key asset and reflect our mission."

Anita Canady
Convention Year- 1992
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I went on National Council in 1989. I enjoyed the journey very much but didn't think I was qualified. I had decided not to go on after the District Officer's position. Tom wrote a letter to Anita Canaday stating he wanted me to continue and I found it before he mailed it. We talked about it and decided I should continue on Council. I was National President in 1998. I am thankful that I continued because I have met so many Psi Ote friends and proud of the many accomplishments we have made over the years."
Carolyn Logsdon
Convention Year- 1998
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I have never experienced anything like it. Fourteen women who are ALL passionate about the same thing and their power and determination is amazing!! It's not at all like being in a group with the naysayers or the Negative Nellies. Being a part of National Council made me want to DO more and BE more since I had a group of sisters who always had my back!"
Kim Crawley
Convention Year- 2013
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
deanna "As the theme of my Convention was Lessons Learned, a Legacy for our Future, it would be appropriate for me to say that my favorite part about my time on National Council and as National President was the many lessons I learned during that time. Focusing on making a difference in the world while "developing myself socially, morally and intellectually," was one of the best things I could have done for myself, my family, my community and my friends. Psi Iota Xi's focus on bettering the world while focusing on specific areas of need is not unique in the world of service organizations, but I do believe we are unique in highlighting the strength of normal, everyday women, working together to make that difference, one cheese ball, flower sale and Bunny Breakfast at a time. My prayer is for us to continue to have a positive influence on our communities, our country and our world."
Deanna Howard
Convention Year-2011
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Serving on National Council and being a National President was a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, make friends for life, share ideas to help our communities, and have fun. But the best thing about being a part of Psi Iota Xi is giving away a million dollars to help the lives of others.  Our long term projects enable us to have a far more reaching effect to touch and help so many more.  I'm proud to be a Psi Ote.

Historical Display- Convention 2015

Our goal for Convention 2015 is to have a historical display of pictures and items at least part of the weekend.  We will be limited as to the number of extra tables that we will have available.  The difficult part of this plan is the collection of items.  If your chapter or you personally have an item that holds historical significance, please contact me directly.  Cathy Etzler via Email or 419.375.4606.

We can discuss the item, its significance, and the transport of the item.  Depending on your location, it can be given to me ahead of Convention, or brought to Convention by a member.

Cathy Etzler

Extra Raffle Convention 2015

Theta Zeta Chapter of Fort Recovery was so forunate to have a local citizen donate a G.Harvey print for our Convention. It is entitled " A Child's Hero" and has a value with matting and framing of around $300.  This was his Focus on the Family Christmas print in 2005.

The first snow has fallen, the sky is clearing, the sun has not quite set.  It's the perfect time for the first sled ride of the season.

This will be an extra raffle held through out the weekend and will be drawn at the end of the Convention along with our #3 Raffle.

A donation from our profit on this raffle will be given to the Long Term Project by Theta Zeta chapter.

Convention Awards Presentation

For the last couple of years, we have eliminated the presentation of our historical icons at our Awards ceremony; this has been an item on National Council's agenda to finalize. There will still be awards given in the form of certificates.

We now feel we have a plan in the dispersal of these award icons that will benefit our Long Term Project.  Step by step and with much consideration and respect of these awards, here is our process.

1)      Gathering of Icons- Recollecting

2)      Researching the history of each icon and their possible donor.

3)      Offering the icon back to the original donor. (Many original                    donors are disbanded chapters)

4)      Appraisal of the icon.

5)      Process to Offer icons to Our chapters

Well, we have FINALLY made it to # 5 and I am proud to say that these awards (for the last time) will be part of our historical display at Convention 2015.  They will also be offered for Silent Auction Bids. Each will have a starting bid (listed below) and you will be allowed to bid in increments of $5.  The bidding will start as registration opens at 8:00 AM and end at 6:45 PM- 15 minutes before dinner is served.  You must sign a personal name or a name of a chapter on each bid.  You must be at the dinner when the winning bids are announced and be prepared with cash or a check to pay for your winning bid at that time.

All monies from this Silent Auction will go directly to the Long Term Project.

If you win, you will be taking the icon at the time of announcement.

I have had some chapters very interested in a specific icon, if that is the case with YOUR chapter, be prepared and discuss ahead of time with your chapter.

CHAPTER OR INDIVIDUAL MUST BE PRESENT AT CONVENTION TO BID.

  • Saturday Evening Celebration-Our Saturday evening event will be a "Tip of the Hat Celebration" in honor of all the philanthropic work we have accomplished over the years.  Feel free to come in a hat of your choice, it can be historical, it can be funny, it is your choice.  We want to thank Pat Kugler and Eta Gamma of Valparaiso, IN for allowing us to use their original idea AGAIN.  We thought everyone had a great time at their Convention wearing their hats and the idea kept coming up again and again to tip our hat to our accomplishments.  So thanks again to Eta Gamma, they are honored and humbled that we chose to try this again.
  • Reminder that Saturday Morning there will be an Information Fair with ideas on:
  1. Money making ideas for the General Fund
  2. Recruiting and membership
  3. Fun things to do at meetings
  4. Fund raising ideas for the Project Fund
  • Boxed lunches will be served from 11AM-12 Noon on Saturday and Convention will start at 12:30 PM on Saturday.  Please be aware of this as this is 30 minutes earlier than last year.

Please challenge your chapter to benefit from Convention by attending.  This is your organization.  It is an investment.

SCRAPBOOK PAGES
If your chapter is traveling to the Indiana State Meeting on April 18, feel free to bring your scrapbook page to give to any district officer or to leave at the National Sales table in the vendor area. Contact your district officer or Pat Menge (patmenge.pi.pix@gmail.com) if you want to make other arrangements. The time and effort being put into these pages shows (and is greatly appreciated). Thanks!

National Awards Ceremony

As always, there will be National Awards (certificates) presented at Convention 2015, however, after much discussion your National Council has eliminated a few awards.  Our goal was to keep TOP awards in the main categories of our philanthropic work.  We also have challenged ourselves to honor and praise as many chapters as possible in our District Meetings.  Here is our summary:

STILL TO BE AWARDED:

  • Largest Amount Per Capita-All Music Projects
  • Largest Amount Per Capita- All Art Projects (Fine Arts)
  • Largest Amount Per Capita Contributed to Speech and Hearing Projects
  • Largest Amount Per Capita Contributed to All Philanthropic Projects
  • Largest Amount Per Capita to Literature/ Literacy Projects
  • Largest Amount Per Capita for Other Projects- Community Outreach
  • Volunteer Service Hours - Per Capita
  • Louise Clark Convention Attendance Award - Given To the Chapter who had the best percentage of Attendees from the last Convention (2014) - Awarded in 2015

TO BE ELIMINATED - WITH RATIONALES:

  • Largest Amount Given to Symphonies

RATIONALE-The amount of money given will also qualify for the All Music Projects Award. Council believes there was redundancy.

  • Largest Amount Given to All Cultural Projects

RATIONALE- This award was a combination of Music and Art, which are already awarded separately.

  • Meeting Attendance Award - Best Percentage

RATIONALE- This award was originally intended to go to the Chapter that had the highest attendance % at scheduled monthly meetings.  It was inferred that this would be based on original scheduled dates with individuals present; but due to our culture today of rescheduling meetings to meet the needs of its members and new possibilities for electronic meetings, we want all chapters to be creative and flexible on how members participate within a chapter without being penalized.   With this said, this award does not represent the current organizational culture and will be retired.

Thanks again to all chapters as you work for the betterment of OTHERS.

National Council

Long Term Project

National Council met the weekend of March 14th and discussion took place about the Long Term Project.  In the first three years, Psi Iota Xi members have donated $23,000 to the LTP.  National Council is concerned that we are not moving toward our goal in funding the Multifaceted Intensive Stuttering Services in the time frame originally planned.  We know Dr. Gabel has big plans and is busy developing programs for upcoming summer clinics.

National Council has suggested in newsletter articles that each chapter donate to the National LTP.   A few chapters have already sent in checks.  Others have added the LTP to their budget and that is great and we thank you for your donations.

National Council realized something needed to be done to help motivate chapters to give even more, in an effort to move toward the $100,000 goal more quickly.  A motion was stated and approved to take $10,000 out of the National General Fund and move it to the Long Term Project Fund, to be disbursed immediately.

National Council looks forward to our Psi Iota Xi membership continuing to donate funds toward Dr. Gabel's Multifaceted Stuttering Clinic at the University of Toledo. Again, this allows Dr. Gabel to provide more services at his clinics, to help more individuals and expand the endeavors of Psi Iota Xi.

Please read this quote from, Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, and remember, "Happiness doesn't result from what we get, but from what we have given."

National Project Chair,

Connie McDaniel

I recently came across a listing of ways to boost the spirit of an organization.  Without a doubt, this is a necessary component of our chapters' health.  When working with women of all ages, it is extremely important to pay attention to each other's needs.

Some of the listing:

  • o   Make note of important events in others' lives.
  • o    Feel free to give compliments.
  • o   Follow up with emails or hand-written notes for group's success.
  • o   Always share appreciation.
  • o   Small gifts.
  • o   Be an Active listener.
  • o   Smile.
  • o   Admit mistakes.
  • o   Be timely to be effective.
  • o   Always express your faith in your group.
  • o   Be sure to remember your group is making a difference.
  • o   CELEBRATE SUCCESS with your group.

Cathy Etzler

  • Business Cards- Some organizations that I have been associated with have created a business card for all members to distribute.
  • A great idea is to have your chapter be greeters or program distributors at a local concert, art show, or theater production. Let people know who you are and that art, music, literature and speech and hearing are the focus of our philanthropic work.
 Cathy Etzler, National President
Historical Tidbits

Where Have We Been, Where are We Now and Where are We Headed?

Psi Iota Xi chapters exist mostly in Indiana, with two to four chapters in each of the surrounding states. Outreach, or extension has always been a goal of our organization. Throughout the years there have been chapters in several other states, the most recent being Tennessee (Nashville).

In looking through old Helicons, we learn many of the locations where Psi Iota Xi chapters once existed.

Federal Way and Seattle, Washington; Kenosha, Wisconsin and Fort Lauderdale, Florida are a few. I also enjoyed reading from our National Council minutes, at the Indiana State Library, that in 1968 they were working with many PIX Alumna who lived in the Washington, DC area to develop a chapter out there. Many of us know that a national convention in the late 1970's was held in Seattle, Washington. That's the farthest members have ever travelled for a convention.

I would really enjoy getting to travel to make a "chapter visit" to Florida in the Winter. How about you?

As National Council looks to the future of the organization, we hope to grow our membership, through new technologies (electronic communication capabilities) and reaching out to those who have been in our great organization and are now in other areas. Our National Conductress is in communication with ladies from other parts of the country, who have reached out to us via the national website in hopes of "expanding our horizons."

National Vice President
2014 Fort Recovery Citizen of the Year, Cathy Etzler

Our National President, Cathy Etzler, was recently honored at the Fort Recovery Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet as the 2014 Fort Recovery Citizen of the Year.  Cathy was recognized for her involvement in her community, church, Red Hat Society, Bell Choir, and for her role in the Psi Iota Xi Philanthropic Organization.  Cathy was one of the founding members of the Theta Zeta chapter which was formed in 1971.  Not only has Cathy been active in her local chapter for 44 years, she has been a familiar face at the district and national level for many years.

The Theta Zeta chapter, National Council, and Past National Presidents, are extremely proud of Cathy and all she has contributed to our organization both at the local and national level. Cathy is very dedicated to all her sorority work, doing her very best and often enhancing it in some way.  When hearing Cathy speak about the Psi Iota Xi, she demonstrates an indescribable passion and she displays a special glow for her love of this organization.  Cathy has an innate ability to bring people together, to bring joy to their lives and to leave every setting just a little bit better than she found it.  Congratulations Cathy and Thank You for your dedication!

Hear Indiana

Every 36 hours a baby in Indiana is born unable to hear, but today's technology can restore the sense of sound. Hunter Slama (pictured) was born deaf, but thanks to his cochlear implants, he can hear the sounds of spring. On Saturday, April 25th, at Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis we will run, walk and talk in celebration of sound. Join the Psi Iota Xi team at TalkWalkRun.com, and walk to support better hearing on Sat. April 25th!

The money raised at the Talk Walk Run also supports the Hear Indiana Listening and Spoken Language Camp for Deaf or Hard of Hearing Children, which runs June 28-July 3rd. 80-90% of Hear Indiana campers receive some financial assistance and over half receive a full scholarship. To be able to keep the camp fees affordable for all 65 campers, Hear Indiana is dependent upon grants, sponsorships, and private donations. Would your chapter sponsor one low-income camper this year? A full campership cost is $450, but any amount would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be mailed to Hear Indiana, 4740 Kingsway Dr., Suite 33, Indianapolis, IN 46205.

Psi Iota Xi's philanthropy in speech and hearing is critical to the long-term success of programs like theses. Together we can change lives!

Now Available - Chapter email addresses on our new internet domain.

Why should YOUR chapter have its own email address?

  1. All PIX communications will be centralized into one mailbox. ONE dedicated email account for all communications instead of multiple personal email addresses.
  2. Address will stay the same even when the president and/or treasurer changes. No communications will be lost because National was not made aware of an address change or update.
  3. Chapter controls password and access so only the president, treasurer and whomever they choose can have access to the chapter's email. The password can be changed when officers change to protect access.
  4. Streamlines communications from National to all chapters. Nothing will be missed because someone did not read her email.

Contact Heather Mitchell, National Editor, for details about establishing your chapter's new email address.
