A Message From Your National President.

Are You an Optimist?

With the weather continuing to keep us indoors, the cold temperatures, the rough traveling, and our fear of watching the next forecast; are you staying optimistic???????  It is definitely a challenge.  I love parts of winter, but by about the beginning of March each year, I am thinking flowers, different clothes, walking outdoors, and reading on my porch.

I have a very dear man in my church who is the epitome of optimism. He happens to be a member of an Optimist Club, and one day I asked him about the group and their meetings.  The next time I was around him, he handed me a business card with The Optimist Creed. Here it is.

Promise Yourself
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

I decided last year as I started the National Presidency to challenge myself to focus on one of these ten sentences each month for the next ten months.  I have been working hard at it, but I will tell you, it has put a positive feel on this year and my duties with all of you and my own chapter.

As I work on presidential duties and Convention 2015 preparation, I have found myself bringing less pressure and stress into the situation and instead turning to my faith to know that this is a step-by-step process and "it will happen."  No, it might not be perfect, but for sure my chapter and I will give it our best effort.

Here are my thoughts relating to the 10 ideas above and how they relate to PSI IOTA XI.

# 1 +#2 - Be strong and confident women knowing that your PIX work is truly appreciated.

#3+ #4 - Be sure to carry a positive attitude around when dealing with your "sisters."  They are special ladies in this sisterhood.  Find the GOOD.

#5 +# 6+# 7 - When dealing with the business of your chapter, do your best, forget mistakes and failures, and praise others for their success.

#8 - This is for daily living- others have struggles, give them a smile.

# 9 - This is my favorite!  Stay busy being POSITIVE, believe me I know, it works, there is no time left to be negative.

# 10 - Summary of the CREED.

Stay warm, be ready to end another wonderful year,  and my blessings to your chapter,

Reminder:  Presidents, please be aware that each year more and more mailings are coming via email, when possible. Although some will still be via USPS it is very important that we have current email address. Using email is a cost savings and very efficient. It is very important that you are checking your email routinely for the efficiency of your chapter business.

The Indiana State Meeting

"Cheering on Psi Otes", April 18, 2015, Hosted by Alpha Psi Chapter Washington.

Greetings from the Indiana State Board

Registration packets for the 2015 State Meeting were mailed out on Jan 20th.  Please keep a look out for them and if Chapter Presidents don't receive by Feb 2nd, please contact President Terri Resler at terri.resler@navy.mil or 812-295-6524.  Registration information can be viewed on the Indiana and National websites.

Your Indiana State Board met on Friday January 2nd in Indianapolis for our Winter meeting.  Project Screening Committee met on Saturday the 3rd.  They heard from some wonderful Project Representatives and there were lots of discussion on deciding how to distribute our Indiana Project money.  Information on projects will be coming to chapter Presidents in February.

Psi Otes lead the cheer for those less fortunate - alone we call out for a cause, but together we are thundering a cheer of change.

Bridging the Past to the Future, THETA ZETA preparing for Convention 2015

Historical Display- Convention 2015

Our goal for Convention 2015 is to have a historical display of pictures and items at least part of the weekend.  We will be limited as to the number of extra tables that we will have available.  The difficult part of this plan is the collection of items.  If your chapter or you personally have an item that holds historical significance, please contact me directly.  Cathy Etzler- 419.375.4606 or etzlerca@bright.net

We can discuss the item, its significance, and the transport of the item.  Depending on your location, it can be given to me ahead of Convention, or brought to Convention by a member.

Extra Raffle Convention 2015

Theta Zeta Chapter of Fort Recovery was so forunate to have a local citizen donate a G.Harvey print for our Convention. It is entitled " A Child's Hero" and has a value with matting and framing of around $300.  This was his focus on the Family Christmas print in 2005.

The first snow has fallen, the sky is clearing, the sun has not quite set.  It's the perfect time for the first sled ride of the season.

This will be an extra raffle held through out the weekend and will be drawn at the end of the Convention along with our #3 Raffle.

A donation from our profit on this raffle will be given to the Long Term Project by Theta Zeta chapter.

*****IMPORTANT ******

Convention Information

  • Theta Zeta is hoping that you are starting to talk in your chapters about the upcoming Convention.  Registration packets will be coming to your President electronically.  Be on the lookout and respond to the email that you have received.  Only presidents not having an email will receive a hard copy.
  • Saturday Evening Celebration-Our Saturday evening event will be a "Tip of the Hat Celebration" in honor of all the philanthropic work we have accomplished over the years.  Feel free to come in a hat of your choice, it can be historical, it can be funny, it is your choice.  We want to thank Pat Kugler and Eta Gamma of Valparaiso, IN for allowing us to use their original idea AGAIN.  We thought everyone had a great time at their Convention wearing their hats and the idea kept coming up again and again to tip our hat to our accomplishments.  So thanks again to Eta Gamma, they are honored and humbled that we chose to try this again.
  • Reminder that Saturday Morning there will be an Information Fair with ideas on:
  1. Money making ideas for the General Fund
  2. Recruiting and membership
  3. Fun things to do at meetings
  4. Fund raising ideas for the Project Fund
  • Boxed lunches will be served from 11AM-12 Noon on Saturday and Convention will start at 12:30 PM on Saturday.  Please be aware of this as this is 30 minutes earlier than last year.

Please challenge your chapter to benefit from Convention by attending.  This is your organization.  It is an investment.

A Possible Chapter Project at Riley

As many of you know, your National Council spent a Saturday morning in November completing a service project for Riley Children's Hospital.  While we were there, our Riley liaison that day, Chelsey Backus informed us of the Buzzy Bee device.  Below is a summary of the project and a thank you that we received.  We wanted all our chapters to be informed as this would be a potential project for individual chapters.  The cost is affordable.

The IBD Parent Mentor group would like to thank you for the gifts of craft and art supplies that you provided the Riley Hospital Gastroenterology (GI) Department in December! The GI department was humbled and honored by your generous gift. Your donation made an immediate impact by bringing joy to a young boy who was getting an infusion on his birthday the following week. These kids go through so many procedures and experience so much pain with their diseases.  It is wonderful to have small tools like these activity kits and distraction devices that help in a big way.

Many of you asked for additional ways to support the Riley Gastroenterology Department. The IBD Parent Mentor Group is a part of a Patient Centered Care initiative to improve the quality of care for children diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) at Riley Hospital for Children. Riley has more than 450 patients that are being treated for IBD. Of that total, 144 use injections or infusions as part of their medical therapy.

For parents who administer multiple weekly injections to their child, using the term "game changer" is an understatement when describing a Buzzy Bee device. Administering a shot use to take 30-40 minutes of negotiation along with bribes and other unsuccessful attempts at minimizing the injection pain. Thanks to Buzzy (see www.Buzzy4shots.com for more information) this process simpler, less painful and lasts only a few minutes for kids and families.

After seeing such positive experiences when utilizing Buzzy, the IBD Parent Mentor Group has seen the importance of pain management and distractions devices for children as a means to increase medication adherence and reduce the pain and anxiety associated with IBD therapies. As a result, we are looking to provide Buzzy as an option to all GI patients and are investigating purchasing electronic distraction tools for our infusion clinic (i.e. iPads, DVD's, and video games). We hope that you will consider donating to support this meaningful project to provide the Deluxe Kit to patients at a cost of $60 a piece for IBD Riley Kids.

  • 94.94 Polar Pops

OR

"Your Chapter's Contribution to the National PIX Long Term Project."

Just $75 from each chapter will ensure that we are able to give Dr. Gabel a substantial check at National Convention 2015. A $75 donation from each chapter (about $7,500 total), when added to the current balance of $2,500, comes to another $10,000 towards our $100,000 commitment. That's $10,000 to assist families with the $600 fee for stuttering clinics for children or the $1,200 fee for adolescents and adults. With this amount we could help sixteen children or eight adolescents and adults.

This is your Long Term Project. What are you willing to give up to contribute to this effort? Consider making a donation to the LTP as part of your annual budget. Better yet, I challenge you to make that a $100 donation towards the goal of meeting our $100,000 commitment even earlier. Checks can be made out to PIX Long Term Project and sent to Connie McDaniel, National Project Chair, and 151 White Lane, Bedford, IN 47421.

The MSSD 33rd Winter Dance Concert finished with a powerful finale

called "Justice for All," choreographed by Gallaudet student Tanisha Russell to the Michael Jackson song, "They Don't Care About Us." The number brought the audience to its feet with enthusiastic applause on February 7.

My chapter uses an easy and fun activity to raise money for our General Fund and our Convention Fund. It is a game called BACKWARD BINGO. We play 3 games. It is a quarter to play each game.  We played before meeting, middle of meeting and end of the meeting.

Give everyone a paper bingo card.  Everyone stands up, and then you say "If you have N 45, you are out

(Backward Bingo) and those people sit down, you continue until you have a winner.  If the last two people go out on same number, have a tiebreaker, like adding up the numbers in the B column- High total wins. (Or whatever you would choose).

Small Prizes (Dollar Store)

I brought the prizes first time, then after that the three winners brought the prizes for the next meeting.

FUN, EASY, TAKES NO TIME.

We will be playing this game at the Saturday Evening Party for fun!

Use Postcards at Your Event.

I attend a Basket Bingo every year and when I arrive at that Bingo, they present me with a postcard to fill out with my address.  Sometime during the evening, they collect those, and then the next year, six weeks before the event, I receive my postcard reminding me of THEIR EVENT.

I immediately get it on my calendar, and I have missed maybe only one to two of their Basket Bingos in the past ten to fifteen years.

Spending the money on postage will be worth it.  It will increase your ticket sales.

Did You Know Elsie?

We have all heard the name, Elsie Sweeney, as it was her encouragement that created an endowment, now held with the Central Indiana Community Foundation, which allows for donations to symphonies throughout the Psi Iota Xi states and the purchase of tickets for students to attend symphony concerts.

Below are excerpts from a 1972 Helicon article, giving us more insight into her life and love of Psi Iota Xi:

Elsie Irwin Sweeney, July 18, 1888 to May 2, 1972

"To know her was to love her; to work with her an inspiration; to visit her was a joy; to stroll through her gardens with her was an education; to mention music to her was a verbal opera; to talk to her about God and his wonders was an unforgettable experience...she was our Miss Elsie.

She was recognized internationally as an honored philanthropist.  Tri-State Metropolitan Opera and Auditions Awards were made possible through her interest and assistance.  She was an ardent supporter of the Hoosier Salon and each year presented an artist award in the

 name of our sorority.

Elsie's life exemplified the purposes and ideals of Psi Iota Xi Sorority from her initiation in June 1904, as a charter member of Epsilon Chapter of Columbus, Indiana, to her death on May 2, 1972, at Castalia, her palatial home near Columbus."

She was a member of Psi Iota Xi for 68 years!

 "The Drowsy Chaperone"
We all know how talented our Georgiann Coons (Alpha Beta, Seymour) is.  She was able to show her talents in her local community recently by directing the music and starring in "The Drowsy Chaperone" at the Jackson County Community Theatre.

Beth Keeney, Brenda Bonner and Susie Lewis enjoyed traveling down to Seymour to watch Georgiann and surprise her afterward.
