A Message From Your National President.

You all remember purchasing, writing, and passing out your valentines as a child. It was a special time. I still look at the types of valentines that the stores are selling and I cherish the memories of those childhood school Valentine Day parties.

We all want to be loved and accepted. Each and every human being has that as a basic need. At those parties, I can even remember reading each valentine and specifically reading each just to see which Valentine that person chose for me.

I believe in each of us there is still a need to be validated. In our PIX work, we don't give just to be thanked, we never have, but "OH MY" when we see the people and children we have helped or assisted our thanks comes in BUSHELS AND BUNDLES.

When doctors speak of the heart, of course there are parts, and chambers, when I speak of my own heart, I always picture a space where I store experiences and memories, so on a tough or rainy day, I can pull from that space to encourage, enlighten, and motivate me. Psi Iota Xi members do not have a big enough SPACE for all the GOOD we have done. Each member in our history should be praised and lauded for their time doing charitable work. Keep it up ladies, and never forget to take time to place those memories and experiences in your "special space."

I hope you all have a great February, remember the love you dedicated to PIX and thank you for all that caring, sharing and spending of your valuable time.

I love Charlie Brown and Charles Schulz the creator. Here is one my favorite quotes of his, "All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt."

- Charles M. Schulz

Reminder:  Presidents, please be aware that each year more and more mailings are coming via email, when possible. Some will still be via USPS. This is a cost savings and very efficient. It is very important that you are checking your email routinely for the efficiency of your chapter business.

The Indiana State Meeting

"Cheering on Psi Otes", April 18, 2015, Hosted by Alpha Psi Chapter Washington.

Greetings from the Indiana State Board

Registration packets for the 2015 State Meeting were mailed out on Jan 20th.  Please keep a look out for them and if Chapter Presidents don't receive by Feb 2nd, please contact President Terri Resler at terri.resler@navy.mil or 812-295-6524.  Registration information can be viewed on the Indiana and National websites.

Your Indiana State Board met on Friday January 2nd in Indianapolis for our Winter meeting.  Project Screening Committee met on Saturday the 3rd.  They heard from some wonderful Project Representatives and there were lots of discussion on deciding how to distribute our Indiana Project money.  Information on projects will be coming to chapter Presidents in February.

Psi Otes lead the cheer for those less fortunate - alone we call out for a cause, but together we are thundering a cheer of change.

Bridging the Past to the Future, THETA ZETA preparing for Convention 2015

Historical Display- Convention 2015

Our goal for Convention 2015 is to have a historical display of pictures and items at least part of the weekend.  We will be limited as to the number of extra tables that we will have available.  The difficult part of this plan is the collection of items.  If your chapter or you personally have an item that holds historical significance, please contact me directly.  Cathy Etzler- 419.375.4606 or etzlerca@bright.net

We can discuss the item, its significance, and the transport of the item.  Depending on your location, it can be given to me ahead of Convention, or brought to Convention by a member.

*****IMPORTANT ******

Convention Information

  • Theta Zeta is hoping that you are starting to talk in your chapters about the upcoming Convention.  Registration packets will be coming to your President electronically by the end of February.  Be on the lookout and respond to the email that you have received.  Only presidents not having an email will receive a hard copy.
  • Along with the usual raffles, Theta Zeta will be raffling a beautiful framed and matted print that was donated to us.  We will be selling these tickets also during the weekend and give away on Sunday. Some of these profits will be donated to our Long-Term Project by Theta Zeta.
  • Saturday Evening Celebration-Our Saturday evening event will be a "Tip of the Hat Celebration" in honor of all the philanthropic work we have accomplished over the years.  Feel free to come in a hat of your choice, it can be historical, it can be funny, it is your choice.  We want to thank Pat Kugler and Eta Gamma of Valparaiso, IN for allowing us to use their original idea AGAIN.  We thought everyone had a great time at their Convention wearing their hats and the idea kept coming up again and again to tip our hat to our accomplishments.  So thanks again to Eta Gamma, they are honored and humbled that we chose to try this again.
  • Just a reminder if your chapter has anything historical to share, they need to contact Cathy Etzler, National President.  We will be displaying Helicons, Convention Bags, some other items, and our past Convention Awards.
  • Reminder that Saturday Morning there will be an Information Fair with ideas on:
  1. Money making ideas for the General Fund
  2. Recruiting and membership
  3. Fun things to do at meetings
  4. Fund raising ideas for the Project Fund
  • Boxed lunches will be served from 11AM-12 Noon on Saturday and Convention will start at 12:30 PM on Saturday.  Please be aware of this as this is 30 minutes earlier than last year.

A Possible Chapter Project at Riley

As many of you know, your National Council spent a Saturday morning in November completing a service project for Riley Children's Hospital.  While we were there, our Riley liaison that day, Chelsey Backus informed us of the Buzzy Bee device.  Below is a summary of the project and a thank you that we received.  We wanted all our chapters to be informed as this would be a potential project for individual chapters.  The cost is affordable.

The IBD Parent Mentor group would like to thank you for the gifts of craft and art supplies that you provided the Riley Hospital Gastroenterology (GI) Department in December! The GI department was humbled and honored by your generous gift. Your donation made an immediate impact by bringing joy to a young boy who was getting an infusion on his birthday the following week. These kids go through so many procedures and experience so much pain with their diseases.  It is wonderful to have small tools like these activity kits and distraction devices that help in a big way.

Many of you asked for additional ways to support the Riley Gastroenterology Department. The IBD Parent Mentor Group is a part of a Patient Centered Care initiative to improve the quality of care for children diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) at Riley Hospital for Children. Riley has more than 450 patients that are being treated for IBD. Of that total, 144 use injections or infusions as part of their medical therapy.

For parents who administer multiple weekly injections to their child, using the term "game changer" is an understatement when describing a Buzzy Bee device. Administering a shot use to take 30-40 minutes of negotiation along with bribes and other unsuccessful attempts at minimizing the injection pain. Thanks to Buzzy (see www.Buzzy4shots.com for more information) this process simpler, less painful and lasts only a few minutes for kids and families.

After seeing such positive experiences when utilizing Buzzy, the IBD Parent Mentor Group has seen the importance of pain management and distractions devices for children as a means to increase medication adherence and reduce the pain and anxiety associated with IBD therapies. As a result, we are looking to provide Buzzy as an option to all GI patients and are investigating purchasing electronic distraction tools for our infusion clinic (i.e. iPads, DVD's, and video games). We hope that you will consider donating to support this meaningful project to provide the Deluxe Kit to patients at a cost of $60 a piece for IBD Riley Kids.

Long Term Projecct

"Is Your Chapter Contributing?"

I recently had a question about what LTP meant, and I decided right then that we needed to extend some information to all of our chapters again. Each year we have new members that are learning our history and about our projects.

The Intensive Stuttering Clinic at the University of Toledo is our National Long Term Project at the present time.  It is a commitment of $100,000.00 given to the project in increments.  This project was chosen from several proposals.  This project totally depends on the donations from individuals and our chapters.

Has your chapter made a commitment to budget an amount each year to this huge endeavor?  By doing this we are all pledging an amount each year, and that is a chapter commitment.  It can be any amount; it is the idea that we are all supporting this TOGETHER.

http://www.utoledo.edu

This is the University of Toledo website address, when it comes up type Dr. Rod Gabel in the Search box and it will bring up all the information about the Stuttering Clinic.

In 2012, we gave Dr. Gabel the first $10,000.00, in 2013 another $5,000.00 and in 2014 $8,000.00, so a total of $23,000.00.  We are currently closing in on another $5,000.00 for our next payment. It would be wonderful to present another increment this year.

Please consider a possibility of your chapter donating to the LTP fund.

Your National Council

ByLaws

A Message from Susie Lewis, National Vice President

The National Bylaw committee met in November, prior to National Council's winter meeting in Indianapolis.  We again went over the Bylaws with a "fine-tooth comb."  Only one chapter submitted an amendment.  The remaining amendment considerations are from the Bylaw committee or National Council.

The Bylaws will be presented the same way at Convention this year as they were last year.  The changes and amendment considerations will be mailed to chapters in late March.  Please make your chapters aware of these amendment considerations, through discussion at your April or May meetings and instruct your delegates on how to vote on them at Convention.  The amendments will be considered by "Parts," of which there are four.  It will be very important that members be prepared ahead of time if they would like to come to the microphone to speak on one of the proposed amendments.

More information will follow in the April and/or May newsletter.

ALSO, be reminded that chapters are to update their own Bylaws each year, based on changes to the National Bylaws approved at Convention.  Chapters are to send any proposed changes to the National Vice President for approval, prior to April 1st each year.

ALSO, in an effort to remain compliant with updated IRS regulations, National Council needs to have a copy of all Chapter Bylaws on file.  National Council recommends Chapters revise their Bylaws to adhere to the National Bylaws, and only have Standing Rules, in an effort to standardize Bylaws throughout the organization.

Please send any Chapter Bylaws to: Susie (preferably electronically) or contact me if you do not have my mailing address and need to mail them.

Looking for ways to bring new life and energy to your meetings? Turn "dull and dreaded" to "energizing and effective" with these tips.

  • Keep the meeting moving, BUT remember to allow time for discussion.  If there is a committee for a certain project; allow the committee to make the decision, this is the reason for the committee in the first place.
  • Make sure to include "social time"- it could only be 10 minutes- but we need that time for fellowship.
  • Mix-up the membership's seating-Be seated by someone you need to get to know.
  • Start each meeting with a game or brain teaser to get the creative juices flowing.
  • When the group has something to celebrate (open new account, finish project on/ahead of time, new members, etc.) celebrate it in the meeting with sparkling water served in champagne glasses. If appropriate, use champagne!
  • During nice weather, hold all or part of the meeting outside. Take advantage of the environment by changing the dress code, refreshments, activities, etc. There's nothing quite like a poolside location for grinding through a budget meeting, or a meeting under the shade tree for coming up with new ideas.
  • Wear favorite hats to meeting- judge for oldest, most unusual, most spring-like etc.  (try this idea yet this year, and then wear your hats to the Saturday Night dinner at Convention.)

Do you pat yourselves on the back?  Do you publicize what all you have accomplished?  This tip is a very simple one, as your year (each year) comes to an end and you are closing books, writing your Helicon article and filling out your Pre-Convention Report, have an officer or your Publicity Chairman write a summary of your year (April) and publicize it in the format you choose. (Radio, TV, Cable TV, Newspaper etc.)  People are interested and we need to share our story.

Historical Tidbits

A letter in the back of the 1934 Helicon reads:

"To the Members of the Psi Iota Xi Sorority"

Dear Friends:

I felt you would be interested to know that the OXYGENAIRE has been chosen to go around the world with the famous Seth Parker Expedition.  The heads of this expedition with commendable foresight are providing for safe and certain oxygen therapy and have chosen a machine which will be just as efficient in a grass hut thousands of miles from civilization as in a modern hospital.

The gift, by your Sorority in 1932 was an outstanding example of a real worthwhile investment in human comfort and toward the relief of all those suffering from oxygen want.  It deserves continued praise and admiration for your initiative, your leadership and your high ideals.

We would count it a real pleasure to have the opportunity to co-operate with your Sorority at this or any future time.  We hope that it will be possible for you to consider the OXYGENAIRE again this year.  If I can be of any service please write me personally.

  Cordially and sincerely,

AMERICAN HOSPITAL SUPPLY CORPORATION

Zeta Tau Celebrates 50 years!

The Zeta Tau chapter of Milroy, Indiana, recently celebrated their 50th Chapter Anniversary with a weekend trip to Bardstown, KY.  Zeta Tau was chartered on October 11, 1964.

The sisters stayed at a bed & breakfast home among the beautiful rolling hills of KY horse country.  A train ride was the highlight of the weekend as sisters enjoyed the wonderful lunch and scenery traveling on "My Old Kentucky Dinner Train."  The train traveled 37 miles through Bernheim Forest and the Jim Beam Distillery property to Limestone Springs and back. Shopping in the local Bardstown area during the Arts Fair was a nice way to end this day.

The weekend was full of good food, laughs, games, and sharing.  Time was spent reflecting on our founders and history of our sisterhood.  Many memories were made and friendships strengthened.
