A Message From Your National President.

2015 has arrived, and I for one, am so excited. It is my Convention year; can it really be here finally? My chapter and I are excited, pleased, and honored to be the host chapter for another wonderful event in the history of Psi Iota Xi.

As we all reflect on the blessings of 2014 and make those resolutions for 2015, here are my thoughts.

Blessing #1- I am a member of a wonderful philanthropic group and am thankful that I chose to say yes when considering membership in 1971 in Fort Recovery.

Blessing #2- I have been blessed to have served under wonderful Past National Presidents and have had wonderful National Council members along my 10-year journey so far.

Blessing #3- I have had the blessing of a very supportive family, my Theta Zeta sisters, and my Fort Recovery community on this path.

Blessing #4- I have had the blessing of meeting some phenomenal people along the way. All of them have been giving, and caring individuals. (That would be all of you, my friends!)

Blessing # 5-I have had the blessings of being able to share some God-Given talents to help this organization and all praise goes to Him.

I could go on and on counting blessings as you all can.

Now the hard part, which of these resolutions will you be able to keep in 2015?

Resolution #1- I resolve that I will give my best to my chapter and my organization and stay positive along this journey remembering that we are confident, creative volunteers who are trying and doing our best.

Resolution # 2- I resolve that I will "take care of my sisters", in my chapter, other chapters, or on National Council. This is first and foremost for the success of our National Organization.

Resolution # 3- I resolve that I will remember "the good of all" when making decisions for the betterment of this organization.

Resolution # 4- I resolve that I will look at my surroundings, whether it be on a chapter or National level to help those "less fortunate."

Resolution # 5- I resolve that I am going to review and focus on the words of the Opening and Closing verses. These words say it all.

As I reflect on my 44 years of being associated with Psi Iota Xi, I cannot comprehend all it has given to me. I feel so very fortunate; so many people do not have these opportunities in their lives. So I guess the final thought I have for each of you and your chapter this brand-new year of 2015 can be said in a quote.

"We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit." - Albert Schweitzer

When we have National Council meetings, we all talk ahead of time about how we can't wait to get there, the reason is not that we are looking forward to a lengthy meeting, but we are looking forward to "rekindling that inner spirit." I feel this way about my chapter, National Council and all the projects I have ever worked on. I come home a rejuvenated person every time.

So my simple wish for all of you in 2015 (and I hope it is a resolution) is to let PIX rekindle your inner spirit, because without all the time and energy you have given, many people WOULD NOT have been touched by you. We are doing such great work!

Loyally,

 Cathy

Many of our chapters will be celebrating anniversaries in 2015. We want to be the first to express our congratulations to your chapters on the accomplishment of the many years of your wonderful relationship with Psi Iota Xi. We treasure you.
Take time to celebrate with your membership, and stop and reflect on all you have accomplished. What precious memories!

Tea Cup Yellow RoseThe Meaning of The Yellow Rose
The yellow rose is known for its optimistic hue and general association with good cheer. Yellow has long been associated with the sun and its life-giving warmth. The elusive yellow rose was discovered growing wild in the Middle East. The early yellow rose lacked a sweet scent, but as cultivation methods were developed and refined, the beloved sweet-and-spicy rose scent was soon introduced and the yellow rose achieved all its optimistic and aromatic glory.
So as Psi Iota Xi members in the present day go about our daily efforts in our philanthropic efforts, remember the yellow rose. OPTIMISTIC- LIFE-GIVING WARMTH-GOOD CHEER.
I am so grateful the yellow rose was chosen. Let's honor it this year.

Cathy

Bridging the Past to the Future, THETA ZETA preparing for Convention 2015

Historical Display- Convention 2015

Our goal for Convention 2015 is to have a historical display of pictures and items at least part of the weekend.  We will be limited as to the number of extra tables that we will have available.  The difficult part of this plan is the collection of items.  If your chapter or you personally have an item that holds historical significance, please contact me directly.  Cathy Etzler- 419.375.4606 or etzlerca@bright.net

We can discuss the item, its significance, and the transport of the item.  Depending on your location, it can be given to me ahead of Convention, or brought to Convention by a member.

Saturday Morning- Convention 2015

The district officers are putting together an information fair for convention attendees. We will have a variety of displays with helpful hints, ideas and take-aways on a number of topics - including (but not limited to):

* Money making ideas for the General Fund

* Recruiting and membership

* Fun things to do at meetings

* Fund raising ideas for the Project Fund

If YOU have ideas you'd like to share with sister Psi Otes, contact your district officer and she'll pass along your ideas to be included in the displays.

Andrea English, North West District

Kathy Lyons, West Central District

Rhonda McNall-Crisenbery, East Central District

Mo Dix, South West District

Sandy Johnson, South East District

In Need of General Fund Ideas?

I know we always seem to follow the same agenda as we did the "year before". And I know our meetings seem to go the same way as they did the "year before".

So why not change things up with a new general fund idea. While traveling and meeting with chapters they always have neat General Fund ideas. I would like to share some of those with you.

1. There is one called "pocket change every one empties their coin purse, change from the bottom of your purse, coat pockets, or where ever you stick that extra change and they put it in a can and at the end of the year they add it up.

2. "Happy Bucks" or another chapter calls it Brags and Complaints". Pass an envelope around and you place any dollar amount you can in it. Then share what makes you happy or brag about that great job your husband did cooking for you, or complain he didn't do a darn thing all weekend but watch football!

3. "Hostess Gift"- Have hostess furnish a small gift of some kind and sell chances to win it, write your name on a paper and the lucky person name drawn gets the surprise gift.

I have a few more but I will wait till convention to share them with you. It's always fun to try to change things up a little with some fun and raise a little money for the General Fund.
I will be collecting these ideas and putting together a display at convention with General Fund Ideas. So if your chapter has one that you would like to share please let me know so I can include your idea on the display. If every chapter shares one idea we will have a lot of ideas!

Hope Happens Here
Cathy Etzler, National President, and Connie McDaniel, National Project Chair, attended the Riley Children's Foundation Annual Luncheon on Friday, November 21, 2014. They joined 1,500 health care providers and supporters of Riley Hospital for Children. The 2015 Riley Champions were highlighted and their stories of hope and courage were shared. Wesley Corbin, from Chalmers, Indiana, was the featured Riley Champion. Violinist Cathy Morris, who is featured on the Riley television commercials, provided musical entertainment. Musician Jon McLaughlin debuted his original song, Hope Happens Here, to the delight of all attendees. Psi Iota Xi is proud to support Riley Hospital for Children.

The Metropolitan Opera

2014 Central Region Finals

Susie Lewis, National Vice President, and Connie McDaniel, National Project Chair, attended The Metropolitan Opera 2014 Central Region Finals on November 23, in Evanston, Illinois. The auditions were held at the Music Institute of Chicago, where 11 students vied for the regional title and an opportunity to audition for the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Psi Iota Xi sponsors the 2nd place winner with prize money as voted on by the membership each year at our National Convention. Your National Project Chair presented a check to Geoffrey Agpalo, tenor, from Chicago, IL.

 Just Sharing Ideas

1. I attended a meeting in Ossian, Indiana of the Gamma Zeta chapter when I was EC District Officer, and they had one of the most creative activities of making PIX known in their community. The evening I was there, they sent out their pledges with baked goods (I believe it was cupcakes) and they just talked to people on the streets and told them about PIX and got donations for the cupcakes. If I remember correctly, people were very generous, and when the pledges returned to the meeting, they voted on where to spend the money they had collected. It was POSITIVE, and the $$$$ they collected immediately went back to the community.

2. Attend a "chick flick" with your sisters as a social activity. FUN FUN FUN.

3. Dime a Dip (Quarter with Inflation) -Carry-In or Potluck Meal. Everyone brings a dish to a meal, and the cost of the meal is the number of spoonfuls you put on that plate. You track it until you are full and then pay for your meal. An extra $$$ benefit is everyone brings copies of the recipes and you charge for that also. A very fun event. Great for General Fund Ideas.

A list to keep in your chapter's files:

1. Word of Mouth
2. Sell The Tickets
3. E-mail bulletin- Ask your close friends to forward to anyone they might think is interested.
4. Posters
5. Shop Windows- If having a raffle- display your raffle items.
6. School Signs- Scrolling Signs
7. Local Politician's newsletter
8. Local Town Council Newsletter
9. Newspapers- Radio- TV
10. Facebook- Twitter
11. TV School Communications Class
12. Your chapter's website

Tips
A. Always get information to advertiser in good time.
B. Ask people how they heard about your fundraiser or event- SEE WHAT WORKS.
C. Consider cost. Sometimes spending on publicity reaps rewards.

Historical Tidbits

I was a high school choir director for the first ten years of my working career, so this article from the 1956 Helicon really caught my attention.

PSI OTE CHOIR NEWS

"It has been four years this June since the organization of the combined Psi Ote choir gave their first program at Elkhart, Indiana.  Let us continue this musical program by planning to participate again when the new season of activity starts this fall.

The most recent program was held at Mid-Year Luncheon last January, with thirty-eight members present, and with Miss Mary A. Fausett of Kokomo, a Psi Ote from Fortville chapter, directing.  We hope Miss Fausett will continue to serve as director.

Past directors have been able to assist the Choir only at brief intervals in their musical careers, and we owe Isabel Reichart a vote of confidence for her ability to secure capable directors, in spite of the limited time they could spend with us.

Mr. Fred Koebrae of Indianapolis, after directing the choir in 1952, left for New York to complete his doctor's degree in music;  Mr. J. Russell Paxton, also of Indianapolis, went on to Northwestern University, in Chicago, and Mr. Guy Baker, former music director at Franklin College made his debut just this year in Opera.  So we are holding our breath about the possibility of again securing the services of Miss Fausett."
