A Message From your National President.

As an audience member at the Van Riper Series at Western Michigan, I was completely enthralled by the amount of knowledge in that lecture hall and pleased that we can be a part of funding this wonderful project. Secondly, I was overwhelmed when Connie McDaniel, National Project Chairman was called to the microphone to present our National Project check. Connie gave a wonderful summary and brief history of our organization. In her summary she mentioned that we have given close to a million dollars in donations this year. You could hear the response of amazement in "oohs" and "aahs" from the audience.
How often do we "ooh" and "aah" over our accomplishments and pat ourselves on the back for all our work? A quick reminder to our chapters is that we are focusing on publicizing ourselves this year and also taking time for celebrating our amazing accomplishments and service to others.
How will your chapter meet these goals this year?

When I think of the phrase "ooh" and "aah," my mind immediately goes to the 4th of July fireworks. What will your chapter do to "create fireworks" this year? Will it be a new fundraiser? A new service project? A new philanthropic donation? Initiating new members? Bringing back inactive members?

The audience at Western Michigan was amazed by our donations and I, for one, am not surprised. Each and every chapter in this great organization shows me every year their ingenuity and creativity. Keep up the charitable work ladies and thank you for all you do!!!!!!!

The 3rd definition of fireworks in the dictionary "a display of great skill or energy."

Psi Iota Xi Members are Definitely Full of Energy and Tremendous Skills.

Loyally,

Cathy

Bridging the past to the future, THETA ZETA preparing for Convention 2015

Message from National Conductress - Andrea Niedenthal

National Council Chapter Visits
Each year National Council conducts official Chapter Visits to approximately twenty-five percent of our chapters. Why you ask? It is outlined in our National By-Laws, under Article VI as a responsibility of National Council to conduct in a 4 year cycle. It is important that National Council documents that these visits have occurred to represent that we are meeting our requirements; but the council visit should be more than a checkbox exercise but a time of shared learning for both the chapter and National Council members who are visiting. As a past District Officer, I have been able to see firsthand how the beneficial sharing of ideas can bring new opportunities for membership drives, money making and volunteer projects to a chapter. I like to think that National Council can be a conduit between chapters and share what is or isn't working for others and bring new perspective to any situation.
Is your chapter struggling for new ideas? Don't wait for your official Council Visit. Call your District Officer today and ask for an unofficial visit. Let them know what your struggles are so they can be prepared to bring fresh ideas and make the most of your time together.
Your National Council will be in Indianapolis in November for our Winter Council Meeting, and while we are there we will be spending a morning at Riley Children's Hospital doing some Volunteer Service work. Riley has a needs list (attached or find on website) that can be used by chapters to collect items. This makes an easy service project for any chapter. Check it out!

32nd Annual Van Riper Lecture Series:

Bilingualism and Second Language Acquisition

I had the privilege of attending the 32nd Annual Van Riper Lectures at Western Michigan University as a representative of Psi Iota Xi. It was truly an honor to present a $3,000 check on behalf of PIX to the Van Riper Lectures. Your Project Fees contribute to furthering the education of Speech and Hearing professionals in the Midwest. In addition to the several hundred attendees, participants from eight satellite locations were also able to benefit from the lectures.

Dr. Elizabeth Pena and Dr. Barbara Conboy outlined best practices for children who are bilingual and second language learners. A focus of the lectures was the foundational skills, such as speech perception and cognitive control of these populations, and how these skills are linked to typical language and literacy development. Best methods for assessment were discussed, especially in differentiating language variations from language impairments, and implications for intervention.

The monies used to support this endeavor truly enrich the lives of those about us.

Loyally submitted,

Connie McDaniel

National Project Chair

I have had the good fortune of attending a workshop that was based on The Purpose-Given Life by Rick Warren. I attended in a church setting, but found that many of the concepts are functional every day of my life. It is terribly disheartening when a chapter is considering disbanding. I am asking you to consider the below statements about yourself and your chapter. This would be a healthy thing to do for ALL chapters.

1. What is the purpose of our chapter?
2. How does your community perceive your chapter? Open and Available
3. How hard will I work to see that our chapter's legacy is always there?
4. Does your organization give "life" to your community?
5. Is your chapter taking care of its members first?
6. Everything you do is significant in your community (even one philanthropic donation), If it was gone, it would be missed.
7. Are you part of the "heart and soul" of your community?

Final Challenge: I realize gaining new members is a difficult issue in these times, but think about this: if every chapter would just bring in 1 (one) a year. JUST ONE. Ask yourself what an effect that would have over a period of 5-10 years for our National Organization. Small steps ladies. We can do it!!!!!!!!!!

A great attitude is filled with a positive purpose.

Tip of the Month

Does your school system have a school newspaper?  If so, take advantage of it.  Our school newspaper and school cable station will advertise all our events and fundraisers by adding to the cable news or adding an insert flyer to the school newspaper that goes out to all residents of our community.  If your community is large, and the school system will not allow that, small flyers can be placed on cars advertising your event.  Your information can also be put in church bulletins.

Historical Tidbits

One of the things I am attempting to do this year is spend some time looking through Psi Iota Xi minutes at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis. I will share some of my "historical" tidbits in our newsletter.
The first thing I wanted to research was where the other Greek letter chapters were chartered, and how long they lasted. There was a history in the first book of minutes I opened. I spent three hours at the library the first time I went, and did not even get through the first minute book (1919-1934).
The original ritual was written by Miss Emma Commack and used at the first initiation. The colors were selected and the pin designed by our organization's charter members.

Chapters were installed in this order:
1897 - Alpha, Muncie
1900 - Beta, Evansville
1903 - Gamma, Columbus, Ohio
Delta, Indianapolis
1904 - Epsilon, Columbus, Indiana
Zeta, Bloomington
1906 - Eta, Dayton, Ohio
Theta, New Castle
Iota, Rushville
Kappa, Kokomo
Nu, Eaton, Ohio
Rho, Angola
Sigma, Greensburg
Tau, Lafayette
Pi, Fort Wayne
Upsilon, Greenfield
Other chapters, that were already inactive in one of the earliest Helicons:
Mu - Richmond, Indiana
Omicron - Marion, Indiana
(Gamma and Eta also listed with these)
Keep in mind our earliest chapters were begun by high school aged (and soon after college-aged) girls. I was really intrigued that they traveled from Indiana to Ohio for an early convention. In the Helicon that stated the first convention held in Evansville, the article mentioned, "And let it be known that the roads are now paved all the way to Evansville!"
Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati (all Ohio) surrendered their charters in 1917 due to high school requirements. Evansville, New Albany, Richmond and Marion, Indiana "through lack of interest." (quoted from the minutes book).
Thank goodness Richmond and Marion went on to have another chapter in later years. Sometime I would like to research why they did not "reuse" their previous Greek letter name.
