A Message From your National President.

So, we are in the midst of FALL, and at my house that means watching a lot of football and volleyball. Luckily, I love it.

One of the phrases used in motivating players pre-game is, "Do you have your GAME FACE on?" I like that phrase because I believe it applies to SO many life situations. In this highly competitive world, I don't think it always has to be about winning, but I believe it has to be about being PREPARED for all situations, and in the experiences of winning or losing, of course we know we will have learned lessons and made ourselves into better people, and as my parents used to say, "The sun will come up tomorrow."

I have to credit my daughter, Jenny, she is a 5th grade teacher and she created the below poster for her 5th grade students, asking them if they were prepared for a GREAT 5TH GRADE YEAR and HAD THEIR GAME FACE ON. I immediately took a picture of it on my phone and thought I could create a Psi Iota Xi version.

In doing this, it made me concentrate on the challenges our chapters face in all the planning, implementing, and evaluating for a successful chapter year. I give my congratulations and heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you that is involved in any part of chapter work. It is tough to find more TIME to fit in our BUSY schedules, but if I could ask each and every one of you right now if it was worth it, you would tell me yes, it is a "work of the heart." When I am asked about my job as National President, I use that phrase quite often, and I just don't know how to say it any better. Thank you AGAIN and AGAIN for all you do in the name of PIX.

Feel free to copy and share my PIX version of Get Your Game Face On.

The Top 3 Reasons Why Your Chapter Needs a Copy
To share with your daughters and granddaughters. Our legacies and the future of Psi Iota Xi.

As a gift to new members to give them a glimpse into what Psi Otes have and will continue to do in your community, our state, nationally and even internationally.

To be used as literacy donation to the local public or school library. You can double your impact by reading it at a story time at the library or school and count that time as service hours. Triple your impact by distributing Ears Are Forever (or other age appropriate options) and 4 pack crayons to the children in attendance counting it as a donation speech and hearing. AND maximize the impact by preparing a sheet about what your chapter does in the community with contact information to each child's parent, teacher or the librarian - all of them are either potential Psi Otes or are married to someone who is!
You can realize all these benefits for the low cost of just $15 a copy. Email Pam Gunterman to get your copy.

Greetings All Psi Otes
From your National Treasurer,
Beth Keeney

I was very fortunate to have Becky Hamilton, our Administrative Assistant, send out the Fee (Dues) Statements electronically in August. I want to give a special thank you to Becky. I have mailed some out to the Chapter Treasurers who do not have e-mail addresses. Please contact me if you did not receive yours or if you have other questions. The chapter treasurer's job can be a very overwhelming office.

The dues payments must be received (or postmarked) by Saturday, November 1st. My address, phone numbers and e-mail information are printed at the bottom of this article. Please do not put off this deadline. If you are late there will be a $50.00 fine assessed to your chapter. With these dues we can then pay our National Projects which we voted on at our National Convention in June.

Your chapter has probably already set up budgets and your plans for action are in place. Please remember Psi Iota Xi is a philanthropic organization. We go to great efforts to keep our charitable organization and tax exempt status. I have mailed in our NP20's and officer lists to the Indiana Department of Revenue. At the same time, a lengthy financial report went to the IRS. This is prepared by our CPA.

We should be good stewards of our communities' donations to us and therefore give back to those less fortunate. These are the principles we were founded upon.

This also reminds me of being the National Project Chair last year. At the Project Screening meeting we had several proposals. We even had two new projects submitted last year. They all wanted a portion of our project money for their worthy causes. Sadly, we just did not have the funding to support them all at the level they requested.

What can we do? We can keep striving to add members to our rolls and therefore more project money will be available. We can help those who stutter, cannot hear well or need speech therapy, or students who want to further their education in speech & hearing, art, literature and music by offering scholarships. We can purchase that hearing aid to hear with or a book to read. We can donate a piece of art to the library or purchase art supplies. We could simply provide to a group in our community funds to help put food on the table for families. It just takes a spark to get a fire going.

I think some of the most difficult meetings I have attended were meetings where it was being decided how to spend the money which was earned. These can be very opinionated times. Some chapters have a ways & means committee in place and they help guide the chapter to educated decisions with the input from members.

I also have attended meetings where we wanted to spend the extra funds we had and it was very exciting to add to our present budget or support an organization we had not yet helped. The thank you notes received later can put a smile on your face!

In closing please do not forget to get your dues paid by November 1st. Take pride in what your chapter has earned and - like the country song by George Strait says, "Just give it away."

Pax Vobiscum,

Beth Keeney

Three Generations of Psi Otes

Beta Tau-Frankfort, IN traditionally holds its initiation ceremony in June.  This year Sarah Good was unable to make our June initiation.  She is a busy, young woman.  She was graduating from Clinton Prairie High School and involved in many extracurricular activities.  Sarah has helped us several years roll our cheese balls.  She is a familiar face with the members of Beta Tau.

Therefore, some great Psi Ote minds put their heads together and came up with the plan to have Sarah's initiation later, but before she left for college.  This way we could also include her dear grandmother.  About ten members helped initiate Sarah at the Mulberry Health & Retirement Community where her grandmother lives.

Sarah is a legacy in more ways than one.  As you can see in the picture her mother, Carol Good has been a Psi Ote member since 1997.  Her aunt, Patty (Good) Jackman , pictured in the middle back row joined our great organization 1967.  To top it all off Sarah's grandmother who is pictured in the front row with the lovely bouquet of flowers joined in the spring of 1937!  She is Beta Tau's oldest living member.  Virginia holds her membership in Psi Iota Xi in high regard and was present at our 75th Anniversary party in 2011.

When Sarah presented her grandmother the flower bouquet, there was not one dry eye in the room.  We were all proud to be a part of adding Sarah to our membership records.  Now that is why we love Psi Iota Xi so much and want to pass on our legacy.  Our legacy continues through the good works of lovely families like the Good family.

Sarah of course received her membership certificate and yellow rose. We wish her much continued success as she studies at the University of Bellarmine in Louisville, Kentucky.

Alphi Phi Hosts Sisterhood Bazaar

I was fortunate to attend a first-time event for Alpha Phi, Fortville, IN on Saturday, September 20th. Congratulations to Alpha Phi for hosting a wonderful Sisterhood Bazaar. Approximately 30 vendors had displays of their wares.
The highlight for me was being able to talk to ladies about the positive influence that Alpha Phi has on the Fortville community, and meet many members of their chapter and also the Fortville community.
In the midst of their bazaar, Alpha Phi had an informational table for community members to learn about Alpha Phi and sign up if interested in hearing more information. We appreciate your efforts Alpha Phi sisters for following through on our National Goal to have all chapters find an avenue for membership information. This was a goal from Marcia Mohre's year as President and obviously should continue to be a priority.

WELL DONE- SISTERS!!!!!!!!!!

Boost Morale- Won't Cost You A Dime

This tip goes for every member of Psi Iota Xi, because you are all leaders, whether you are an officer, a chair of a committee, or a member of a committee in your chapter.

THANK YOU- 2 Words that say it all. Everyone does work for this organization AT EVERY LEVEL. Sometimes we ASSUME that our members know they are appreciated, not always so! Take time to Appreciate and Be Thankful at your meetings, in your correspondence, and in your conversation.

Tip of the Month

In this technological world how can we miss the opportunity to use Facebook, Twitter, Chapter Websites, and E-Mail? The answer is we CAN NOT. When we talk about the future of this organization, we must look to technology.
Fund-raisers, events, and always sharing where our chapters are donating are VITAL to our survival. Using all these avenues of publicity in turn can boost membership.
Many chapters have members that are waiting for an opportunity to give of their knowledge of technology to help promote your chapter. Find them and use them.
From experience, I have learned for my chapters' fund-raisers that by just sending an email to my friends and family about the fund-raiser, that it snowballs and they continue that publicity to their friends and family. It personally has helped me increase my personal sales for my chapter.

Historical Tidbits

Did you know that in our history we used to have chapters that were labeled associate chapters?  And yes, one of those chapters is still successfully with us.  It is Delta Zeta-Lafayette.
I would like to thank Sharon White- PNP and Brenda Fisher- our loyal Convention Secretary for this information.

Associate chapters all started with the Greek Letter (Delta).

PIX CrestAssociate chapters were started in the 50's and were formed as a social club of Psi Iota Xi members who had moved to an area where there was no chapter. They did not make money, but sent one delegate to official functions.  In 1976, all chapters were made to be active, and that is what Delta Zeta did, and we are so glad.

Thanks Sharon and Brenda.
