Message From Our 2013-2014

National President - Marcia Mohre

The Beauty of Rest...

Whenever someone complained about winter my great grandmother was quick to explain the importance of the snow and water to the earth. "Winter is like a blanket for the earth, covering it in snow so that it can rest and prepare for the coming spring.  Rest is important and wonderful miracles are taking place beneath the cold snow!"  I think of her wise words every winter and again in the spring when I witness the abundance of new life that emerges from the 'rested' ground.

There have been lots of complaints on Facebook about the massive amount of snow, freezing temperatures, extreme wind and the fact that numerous counties are enforcing severe weather alerts making it illegal to be out on the roads unless you are part of emergency or medical professions. Kudos to our EMTs and Paramedics, first responders, doctors, nurses, firefighters, police, snow plow operators and electric linemen who don't get to rest during these blizzards while they keep us safe.

On November 21, Beth Keeney, National Project Chair of Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Rae Harris and Barbara Mitchel, former National Presidents, attended the Riley Luncheon, Hope Happens Here with Dr. Richard Miyamoto of Riley Hospital.  Dr. Miyamoto, Otolaryngologist who pioneered the Chochlear implant in the Midwest with backing from the State and National levels of Psi Iota Xi.  The luncheon featured the Riley Heroes for this year.  The Heroes were chosen for their recoveries from many physical problems they have conquered this year and are outstanding spokepersons for Riley Hospital for their successful treatment.  1400 guests attended the event, held at the Marriott in Indianapolis.

A Message From District Officer

Membership-Nurturing Current Members

What are you doing in YOUR chapter to nurture and meet the needs of your current members? Have you adjusted your meetings (time, place, etc)?  Added/changed socials? Started or reinstated traditions? Come up with that "special something" that makes current members excited to be Psi Otes and not want to miss out on time with sisters?

A wise Psi Ote once told me something along the lines of, "We can add all the new members possible but if we aren't nurturing and meeting the needs of our current membership it will all be for nothing."

Just as the canned membership kits were ideas for reaching out into the community, we'd like to put together some ideas for taking care of the sisters we have.  Each chapter is special and has a personality all its own, but there are common challenges that come up. How your chapter decided to meet a challenge might spark an idea in another chapter.  Please share your ideas for future distribution.  You can email them to patmenge.pi.pix@gmail.com

An Update on Membership Drives

At National Convention, six months ago (already???), each chapter was given a "canned membership" kit and a challenge to have some kind of membership event during this year.  Here's a brief update on what the chapters represented on National Council have done (or plan to do).

Theta Kappa, Edon, Ohio had a membership table at the community's annual Edon Days in August.  The PIX sisters shared publicity materials from the can with new prospective members, as well as alumni members and interested visitors.  Marcia Mohre reports that Theta Kappa initiated FOUR new members in October.  WOW!!

Many chapters have used display boards and brochures to spread the word about their chapters at other pre-planned events where the public was expected. In some instances, the sisters were volunteering/helping with the event; in others, the event was a project of the chapter. These display boards and brochures can be updated and used again and again to help make the community more aware of Psi Iota Xi.

Beta Alpha had a Christmas themed carry in meal where each sister was asked to invite a guest (prospective member or alumnae).

Theta Zeta, Fort Recovery, Ohio is planning a Ladies' Night Out for the spring. During their event, they plan to share Psi Iota Xi national and local history with their guests. They are planning quite an event in preparation for convention 2015.

Although this update makes it sound like events always work out the first time, not every plan comes off without a hitch. Sigma's first plan didn't work out so in true Psi Ote fashion - On to Plan B!

District Officers and National Council would love to be supportive of your events.  Please pop an email to your District Officer to let her know what and when your event will be (or was).  I'd love to share some of YOUR ideas in a future update. Let us know what worked and what didn't go as well as hoped.

Just remember... You may not see an immediate increase in prospective members, but getting information out into the community about Psi Iota Xi and your local chapter makes the event a success.

One of the women you talk to may file away Psi Otes in her mind for when she has more time available, kids start into school, etc. You never know when that time may come.

Theta Kappa Membership Drive
Theta Kappa, Edon Ohio had a membership table at our annual Edon Days in August!  We handed out the new tri-fold brochure that we received at convention and shared it with new prospective members as well as alumni !  In October we initiated four new members!  This was a record for us and we are especially excited to bring in new members as we prepare to host the 111th Convention in Fort Wayne June 21-22, 2014!

Gamma Kappa News!

Cheeseballs, cheeseballs, cheesballs

Northwest District Officer Andrea English is up to her elbows in cheese as she and the members of the Gamma Kappa, Brook prepare their cheeseballs

Gamma Zeta News!

Gamma Zeta, Ossian, IN collected cans of food and created a tree from them to enter in the Ossian Hometown Christmas. Businesses stayed open late and passed out appetizers or a desserts. People voted on the best one. There was a lighting of the tree, Santa arrived at the library and was led by the children down to the Festival of Trees for a photo op., a church did a live nativity and a petting zoo. Homemade chili was made outdoors. It is a favorite evening in Ossian. We Psi Otes also provided harp music during Festival of Trees and collected diapers for The Closet which helps the young families that are seeing hard times.

Cheeseballs are almost all sold, concert for amphitheater behind us, Longaberger Basket Bingo is finished.. We then celebrated our accomplishments with dinner at the Sassafras in Bluffton, IN. ...Now we are looking for a fun project for spring. Any new ideas?
