Message From Our 2013-2014

National President - Marcia Mohre

Marcia Mohre

From Wishes to Reality...

Have you ever dreamed or wished for something special?  Maybe it was to take a special vacation or purchase a new car or home, change jobs, or finish your college degree? Maybe you have something special on your 'wish list' right now?  I have been able to check off a few things from my own personal wish list but it certainly was not easy to do.

Each one of those 'dreams or visions' involved lots of planning, time and commitment - not to mention sacrifice, and in some cases financial obligations.  But I will admit it was worth all the hard work for the tremendous sense of accomplishment I experienced when I achieved each goal!

District Officer Needed
Northwest District

Applications and inquiries are being accepted for the immediate opening of the NW District Officer position.  The resignation of Helen Enyart, current NW District Officer was accepted with regret during our Council meeting in August.  Helen has sadly resigned to be able to spend more time with her husband and family members who are experiencing some medical challenges at this time. This is a 2-year position overseeing and communicating with 20 chapters.  Obligations include attending National Council meetings 3 times a year and participating in National Convention duties as well as making Council visits to approximately 4 chapters a year and reviewing Preconvention Reports in May and preparing reports for convention. If you are interested in filling this position please contact Marcia Mohre, National President at marciamohre@gmail.com or call 419.212.3004.

Psi Iota Xi Founder's Day

In this bright future, you can't forget your past. - Bob Marley

PIX Crest

The future is bright for Psi Iota Xi:

a new long-term National Project was adopted at Convention 2012;  our beautiful yearbook, The Helicon, now has a permanent home on the Internet; National Council, State Associations, Chapters and Sisters are all working together to make Psi Iota Xi stronger in our communities and vibrant to our Sisterhood.

But even as we look forward, it is important to look back, and to honor those who have come before us; Founders Day gives all Psi Otes an opportunity to say "thank you" to those who had the gumption and foresight to start a woman's organization dedicated to knowledge, philanthropy and personal growth.

Important Convention Changes:

As you were informed last year the next two conventions, the 111th (June 21-22, 2014) and 112th (June 27-28, 2015) will be held at the Grand Wayne Convention Center in Fort Wayne.

Marcia Mohre and I are working together to satisfy the need of less time committed by our delegates and reducing costs for our chapters.

We hope you will work with the new schedule and be flexible, knowing this can answer some of our survey comments and at the same time serve our business responsibilities, and still give us time to share and learn from other members. For sure, we still want time to have fun and relax after a year of intense philanthropic work and sacrifice on all our parts.

Your Ideas Are Valuable, Don't Hesitate To Share.

*Very Important DATE CHANGE*

The new deadline for NATIONAL BY-LAW suggestions is November 1. Due to the bylaw change that was approved at convention the deadline is November 1. The Winter Council meeting takes place between mid-November to early December, and the old date made it hard to have your suggestions in time for the bylaw committee meeting. November 1 will allow the committee to have all suggestions in hand and ready for discussion at the Winter Council meeting.

National Committees

Representatives from each District are needed to serve on the following National Committees- most require approximately a half-day commitment of your time:

 -- Future Planning Committee

 -- Project Screening Committee

 -- Nominating Committee

Dates will be given to you ASAP if you are assigned to a committee and attendance is very important.

District Officers- Needed

 -- Northeast District

(Current DO, Pat Menge, completes first term in 2014 and wishes to accept a second 2-year term)

 -- East Central District

 -- Southwest District

These positions require two-year commitments and are limited to four years overall.  A Letter of Intent along with a letter of chapter support should be sent by November 1.

If interested in serving on a committee or as a District Officer, please contact me at etzlerca@bright.net with your interest or questions. You may also call me at 419-852-2572 (cell) or 419-375-4606 (home).

Planning and Goal Setting

I am a retired 7th grade Language Arts teacher and miss it SOMETIMES, but I still have the opportunity to substitute teach and be around students many days of the year. What I miss most about the year is planning curriculum, events, and special projects for my students. I believe I miss it most because it was the most JOYOUS feeling when I was able to see those plans BLOSSOM. The idea that all my hard work and time spent was being appreciated, helping children learn, and letting all involved realize we had reached our goals.

Well, at this time of the year, we are all starting a plan for our chapter's PIX year. Are you PLANNING TO and PLANNING FOR:

-- Attending Convention and State Meeting (Finances) (Need A Plan)

-- Contributing to Art, Music, Literature, Speech and Hearing

-- Maintaining or Increasing Membership (Membership Drive)

 -- Contributing To Long-Term Project

-- Having at Least One Volunteer Hours Project

-- Publicizing at Least One New Event

-- Reviewing Last Year- Keep The Successful- Pitch The Unsuccessful

-- Set Goals for New Year

-- In Some Way, Helping Your Local Community

And as always, your chapter will have goals that can be added to this list that meet the individual needs of the community that you serve.

In education, we were always trying to find the philosophy that would meet the needs of our children for that year. As a philanthropic worker, I would compare that to meeting the needs of our future membership, I believe that we must always be forward-thinking. I believe that setting goals and CELEBRATING goal achievement is the answer to our success.

Hoosier Salon

Art and the Human Soul

Donnae Dole, the executive director  of the Hoosier Salon invited Marcia Mohre, National President  and BetKeeney, National Project Chair to the 89th Annual Exhibition.  The event was held Friday, August 9, from 6 to 9 pm at Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center. The Hoosier Salon is a statewide nonprofit arts organization whose mission is to create an appreciation of visual art by promoting Hoosier artists and their art.

This year's theme is "Art and the Human Soul."  The art will be displayed through September 28.  From 498 entries received, 138 works of art by 114 current artist members were juried into the show.  Approximately two-thirds of the works of art will travel to tour sites around the state from October 1 to December 21, 2013.

It seems the Hoosier Salon is not quite as old as Psi Iota Xi.  It began in 1925 when the Daughters of Indiana opened the doors to the first exhibition at Marshall Field and Company Galleries in Chicago. They named their show after the famous French "Salon" of the 19th

century.

These women were anxious to prove Indiana artists deserved national recognition. In 1942, the exhibit moved to downtown Indianapolis.  First it was in the Wm. H. Block Galleries (until 1977) and then in the L. S. Ayres Auditorium. When Ayres closed its downtown store, the show was moved to the Indiana State Museum in 1990. The show then moved to the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center in 2012.

This year, the evening began with an awards program and then some delicious hors d'oeuvres. Next we were able to view the art and meet some of the artists. Barb Mitchel, Past National President, and her husband also attended. Her chapter, Eta Delta, Carmel, In, was listed in the 2013 Merit Awards. The chapter gave money in memory of Eta Delta Sisters who have passed. The Epsilon Chapter in Columbus, In, also sponsored a Merit Award. They gave in honor of the Rapps and in memory of Margie Judge who was the National President of Psi Iota Xi in 1989. The program book also mentioned all the Psi Iota Xi chapters that donate to the Salon and listed all of our National Officers; PNP President, Anna Jo McKaig; the Memorial Fund chair, Lesley Bookout; and Sharon Lofland, the Indiana State President. It made us so proud to be recognized and to realize we are noticed.

Both Marcia and I were so glad we attended this event. We saw Psi Iota Xi dollars at work enriching lives. If you get the opportunity, take it and visit this art exhibit and see for yourself.
