Message from our National President - Kim Crawley

The Little Engine That Could is a well known children's story that teaches children the value of perseverance. Just hearing that phrase "I think I can, I think I can," creates a visual in our minds even as adults of the little engine struggling to make it to the top of the hill, but with some faith and confidence over came the obstacle that was holding her and many others back.
Many times in our lives we have those same "I think I can't" moments". They may occur with planning for a National Convention while having a graduation in the family, trying to get new officers-or can I serve as an officer. Or can I get that Pre convention report done when I am a new treasurer, or how could I ever get away to go to convention-I have kids on traveling ball teams, swim lessons, or work is just plain busy right now...all excuses I have had and still continue to hear with members. We ALL have our own mountains to climb.
Whatever form doubt may be taking in your life, or that goal you've been trying to achieve that just seems way too far from happening...it's just on the other side of the hill! Tell yourself

National Council and Sisters Celebrate the Life of Our Northwest District Officer
It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of Cindy Fairfield, our friend and sister. She has been a loyal Psi Ote since 1982. Cindy was a member of Eta Upsilon, Lansing, Illinois for 30 years, then transferred her membership to Zeta Pi, Highland, and most recently became an Alumnae member of Eta Gamma, Valparaiso. Cindy was the first to volunteer for any task presented. She never faltered as her Lansing chapter struggled thru loss of membership and would often state they were few but mighty, always supporting their community projects.CONTINUE READING

Convention 2013 June 28-30
Sigma Chapter is in the final days of preparation for
Convention 2013 - "All aboard the Psi Ote Express"
|
All Aboard the Psi Ote Express will be here before you know it and we hope that you are as excited about it as we are!!
Friday, June 28 Welcome Party- A Wild, Wild Western Train Ride, hosted by the Milroy Sisters. Come in your Western attire as we kick off a great weekend! We have a local, live band to help get the party started! Don't forget to bring the Welcome Party word search for a chance to win another door prize.
 | Raffle chair Susan Burkhart |
All weekend long there will be raffles, 50/50 and other fun activities you won't want to miss! The sales room will be located within the Grand Hall-so, shopping made easy. Hours will be posted in the program when you register. Most of the activities are centrally located in the Grand hall or just steps away!
Saturday, June 29 will begin our Business meetings, along with the District Meetings. The District Officers have been busy preparing informative discussion focusing on Membership drives. Attendance is expected. Dress is business casual. Bring a sweater as it is sometimes difficult to control room temperatures. Sigma chapter members will be available to help in any matter that might arise. They will be easily spotted in their bright pink convention t-shirts. Raffles, Raffles, Raffles and a 50/50 too!
In the afternoon Saturday we will hear from the Project Representatives, please bring a copy of the 2013 Project Proposals to follow along with during their presentations. We will also discuss our proposed bylaws and again, bring a copy for you to follow along during the discussion for note taking, etc. Raffles, 50/50 and More RAFFLES!
Saturday evening will be our annual Awards Program. This year the program will have some changes that you might notice. This is in part to your comments on past surveys-we are hoping to have this celebration completed within 1 hour so that if you wish to see some of the night life in downtown Indianapolis will have time to do so after the program. Attire for the evening-business causal as well or dressier if you so wish. Our wish is that you come in what is comfortable for you. ANY ONE LIKE RAFFLES? WE GOT 'EM!
Sunday, June 30 is a continuation of the Business meeting and includes installation of Officers. The attire again is comfortable business attire. AND, OF COURSE, MORE RAFFLES!
 | Rachel Geis, Kathy Shields and Becky Hamilton are our 2013 Convention Chairs. |
If you need anything at all during the convention, please look for the Convention Chairs, they will be happy to guide you in the right direction or find answers to your questions.
Sigma Chapter wants to thank you for your patience and understanding with the room situation. It's a mixed blessing-we filled our room block, but the hotel is full and no rooms were available outside of the block. Lesson in this? BOOK EARLY! We have done our best to assist chapters with lodging at the Crowne Plaza or found other arrangements for those we couldn't accommodate.
Many, many thanks go out to the chapters who gave up rooms, or switched arrangements for other sisters.
We have learned many things throughout planning this convention! We have no control over many things, but we just have to smile and say "we will deal with it!" What things? you might say...well, here are a few:
* The room situation
* Who would have thought downtown would be so busy this weekend of convention?!
* Parking garage needs construction
* Parking garage company will not cut a deal on the cost of parking
(have to pay for the construction I guess!)
* Hotel begins a renovation this year
* This is a live train station and you might hear and feel the train action
Sigma isn't complaining...just stating some facts that we have dealt with and that you might come in contact with during the convention and your stay at the Crowne Plaza. The sisters of Sigma and the staff at the Crowne Plaza are here for you during the convention and if you need any assistance-PLEASE CONTACT ANY MEMBER OR HOTEL STAFF.
We are looking forward to seeing you at the end of the June!
NOTE : Sigma just learned that the Parking Garage renovations are almost complete! It is suggested that you pull up to the front of hotel, drop off luggage and then park in garage.
Awards - Don't Leave Them Behind
This is a reminder for all chapters who won awards last year at convention. Please remember that you need to bring your award with you to Convention this year. We ask that you return them in the same condition as you received them - polished, cleaned, etc. Thank you in advance!

Another Psi Ote Rose Petal Falls
Gamma Mu, West Lafayette
Margaret "Linda" Fain, 66, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 12, 2013.
Linda loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She would attend all of their various ball games, school events, and was always willing to baby sit or take the kids for a round of Skee-ball at Indiana Beach. She also enjoyed going to Las Vegas, Chicago, and to Hutchinson Island, Florida.
To Linda's friends, she was the technology guru. She would text, email, or use Facebook to communicate. Her friends would even ask her for help when they needed it.With her outgoing personality, Linda never knew a stranger. And, if she did not know someone, she would introduce herself, ask lots of questions, and find out all about them and their family. Our family is certain she knew everyone in Monticello. Linda was passionate about serving her community. Her philanthropic spirit was shown through her various volunteer activities for the past 40 years. Linda had served as President of Psi Iota Xi, Gamma Mu Chapter and as the West Central District Officer for the National Committee. Most recently, Linda was the President of the IU Health White Memorial Hospital Foundation board. She chaired the annual Hospital Gala event since its inception, and could often be found emceeing local events: Fashion Shows, Ladies Night Out,... She was also the Chair of the Women Giving Together fund, through the White County Community Foundation. Linda wrote a bi-monthly column, Life with Linda, for the Monticello Herald Journal. Her column was her way to tell people about not only her life, but also her memories (she remembered everything!). At the end of many of her columns, she would say, "Well friends, hope you enjoyed my trip down memory lane."
She is survived by two daughters, Jennifer (husband Donald) Layton, and Jillian (husband Daniel) Layton both of Battle Ground; four grandchildren, Edmond, Thomas, Brodryck and Annabelle Layton; two nephews, Jason and Francis P. Eaton; and a niece, Melissa Figueroa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the White County Community Foundation, where an endowment fund will be established in Linda's honor.
The loss of a loved one The state Association Parliamentarian, Vicky Patton lost her mother shortly after the IN state meeting. On behalf of National Council we extend our sympathy. *Please help us keep our National Council records accurate and acknowledge your passing sisters by sending death notifications to your District Officers and National President. We'll include them in the following newsletter once we receive the information. Please keep yours and national records accurate when a member passes or transfers, etc.

Hearing the World Through PIX
The Top 3 Reasons Why Your Chapter Needs a Copy
- To share with your daughters and granddaughters. Our legacies and the future of Psi Iota Xi.
- As a gift to new members to give them a glimpse into what Psi Otes have and will continue to do in your community, our state, nationally and even internationally.
- To be used as literacy donation to the local public or school library. You can double your impact by reading it at a story time at the library or school and count that time as service hours. Triple your impact by distributing Ears Are Forever (or other age appropriate options) and 4 pack crayons to the children in attendance counting it as a donation speech and hearing. AND maximize the impact by preparing a sheet about what your chapter does in the community with contact information to each child's parent, teacher or the librarian - all of them are either potential Psi Otes or are married to someone who is!
You can realize all these benefits for the low cost of just $15 a copy. Contact Pam Gunterman @ 574-546-4768 or tpgunterman@hotmail.com.

Got Supplies?
This is the time to think ahead of what you will need this spring as far as supplies from the National Office. Look at the supply list form that is located on the website under members only. Think what your new officers or new members will need.
Note there are starred items* and those can be ordered from the office and emailed to you at no cost. Some items are even free from the website-so, check it out! You still have the option of the printed versions mailed or brought to you at the IN State Association meeting or National Convention in June. Soon more and more items will be available by email and/or online.
You can also make copies of the order form and mail it to the office with your check, or you may order in advance and pay at the IN State Association meeting or Convention. Whichever is most convenient for you or whomever is ordering the supplies for your chapter. You may also pre-order by email. Download Order Form
There are no shipping charges for orders delivered to the state meetings or Convention.
Note-We will no longer supply the little blue books for your chapters since most chapters are going with the larger binder for their information.
Come visit with me at the National Office Table at Convention. I would love to match faces with names!

Please Don't Forward the Newsletter
Most of you receive this newsletter because you'd previously provided your email address to your chapter president who gave it to National Council. A database full of emails was uploaded to our website and carried over to our 3rd party email company, Constant Contact, so that we could send you our monthly newsletter and other Psi Ote communications.
Each month, when the newsletter lands in your inbox full of the latest highlights and upcoming events, many of you are tempted to share the newsletter with your fellow sister Psi Otes. Like many emails you receive, many of you click "Forward" and proceed to send away. Then, you get replies from your sisters that say, "hey, there were no photos in that email you sent." or "it was a bunch of jumbled up words that I couldn't read" or maybe "I got the photos, but I didn't see any words." Of course, that's frustrating because you know it was there when you got the newsletter, right? Indeed, however, the newsletters, with all their awesome news, are not meant to be forwarded, and they won't look the same when your sisters receive one from you. So how do you share them with your sisters?
You get them to register on the website so that their email is included within the Constant Contact database. That's right, it's as simple as that. Sister Psi Otes register for the website, and their email is held safe and secure within several layers of online protection. Plus, all emails are now held within Psi Iota Xi's master database and Constant Contact to keep you all informed of all that's essential to being a valuable Psi Ote. Newsletters will be sent out each month, and everyone who's registered will receive their copy automatically.
Consider this: If you have your sisters' email addresses, why aren't they registered on the PIX website? Why are you forwarding something they should already be receiving themselves? Instead, discuss the convenience, and importance, of registering online during your next chapter meeting. Everyone who has an email address should be registered. It's win-win for you and Psi Iota Xi.
Got questions regarding website registration? Do you have suggestions and/or ideas about the newsletter? Contact your National Editor, Heather Mitchell.
Your Web Gurus,
Tony & Donna of Aradise
