Dates to Remember

Greetings!

Message from our National President - Kim Crawley

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them" John F. Kennedy

As the late president so poignantly put it, gratitude is much more about ACTION than mere words. As we celebrated Thanksgiving and enter the Christmas season don't just merely SPEAK about the things you're grateful for. This coming year, ACT on those feelings of gratitude and do something special for the people in your life and don't forget those less fortunate about you.

ALL ABOARD - Calling all interested Psi Otes!

Do you have a sister Psi Ote who always has great ideas? Does she live and breathe Psi Iota Xi?

Does she make your meetings fun or always has suggestions for doing things in a new way? You probably know exactly who fits that mold! How about suggesting she apply for the NW or SE District Officer position?

Support her with your encouragement to apply! OR ARE YOU interested in coming on board and getting to know even more Psi Ote Sisters? You'll have a chance to spread your Psi Ote Spirit and experience serving on a council with women who share your dedication and enthusiasm for Psi Iota Xi.

It's a two-year term and a wonderful opportunity to get to know more about Psi Iota Xi as well as the women who help make it great!  A letter of support from your Chapter must accompany your letter of application.

For more information contact Marcia Mohre, National Vice President, as soon as possible!

Message from National Editor - Margaret Larson

National Council hopes you have been enjoying the monthly newsletters. The success of this newsletter is dependent upon each chapter sharing their activities.  National Council will continue to provide informative articles that will be of interest to all chapters.  Our National Conductress continues to provide very informative articles about things that many of us were aware but needed to have a refresher -- and of course --  information to help new members better understand our ritual, the importance and history of our pin and the yearly celebration of Founder's Day.   Our National treasurer will continue to keep all chapters advised of important information that concerns all Chapters.

The old saying "pictures are worth a million words" is certainly true for our newsletter.  Council has received many comments about the pictures being placed in the newsletter.  It is such fun to see sisters in action -- and several chapters sharing in an activity.  Keep those pictures coming.

Our Ritual: Pax Vobiscum

As we enter this season of joy and peace, it seems to be a good time to reflect upon the meaning of our password, Pax Vobiscum. From Latin, pax is the beautiful word for peace, while vobiscum can be translated as "with you."

In my research into our ritual, I have yet to find a reference as to exactly why our founding sisters chose this phrase as our password, but it is easy to envision them talking together, studying their Latin textbooks and agreeing that these words invite sisters into our fellowship; within Psi Iota Xi, women can find the peace that comes with friendship, good works and joyful giving.

Think on these words as you meet with your Chapter each month. Take peace with you into your meeting, and keep peace as the business of Psi Otes progresses. Perhaps even write these words on a card to be displayed near your officers, so that each order of business may be approached in a peaceful manner.

And as a benediction, "peace be with you" is a hopeful way to send our sisters out into the community, buoyed by our love and support. The peace that we can give to one another is the key to fostering the compassion we show to others.

Throughout this season, and throughout all the year, let peace be your guide - keep it with you in your heart, but never be afraid to give it away.

Pax Vobiscum, my sisters!

Chapter Happenings

Zeta Epsilon - Bargersville, Indiana

Our Psi Otes in Bargersville can lighten heavy hearts and relax stressed out Sisters! Their hostesses invited members to "Uh Tacky Ote Partee" on Tuesday, November 6th. The meeting was held in the Clary Crossing Club House. They decorated with sheets and covers over the furniture and a few leftover paper plates and tissues lying around. Their snacks were tacky too. Those included cheese whiz, summer sausage with the skin still on, plastic mountain dew cups and lots of "tasteless" snacks and foods. Their paper products were all leftover from various holidays.

The cheese ball Chair, Chris Frampton, wore a cheese hat and gave the upcoming
fundraiser details. Mary Graham, President, kept the meeting timely and followed the agenda. As a new fundraiser they have taken orders for various sports teams hologram drinking glasses. These were very eye catching.
The members really shined after the meeting when they each described their "brilliantly tacky outfits". Some had shopped at Goodwill, and some had simply borrowed from a family member's closet or wore something that was way out of style. A once beautiful1980's bride's maid dress, bubba teeth, vegas shirt, prints, stripes, plaids, hats and unmatched socks and shoes were some of the "beautifully tacky" items worn. And yes, bling adorned many of the tacky Zeta Epsilon members. They even had a guest. She was quickly told, they are not normally "tacky". Will she come back? I say,"Yes," she seemed to laugh just as much as the rest. Peg McGovern brought the guest and challenged the other sisters to bring a guest to their next meeting. This way the  "fun" will continue into the future.

Zeta Epsilon is a creative bunch of women who know how fun Psi Iota Xi can be while helping others at the same time. The chapter was chartered in 1958 and have 20 members. These women made me feel very welcome. They are a close group of Sisters.

Sigma - Greensburg, Indiana

Psi Ote National President, Kim Crawley attends the "On with the Show" talent show on November 12, 2012 -- it was a delightful evening seeing the various talents among those with a variety of disabilities. Pictured (l,r) Shari Phillips, Anne Smith and President, Kim Crawley.

Morgan Hooten, one of three ladies that won the 2011 Leadership Award from the Developmental Services, Inc, gives a big hug to President Kim Crawley. Kim was thrilled with the evening of talent and feels the ARC is worthy of support.  To find out more about the ARC you can go to their Indiana website and can find an ARC chapter in your city or county.  http://www.arcind.org/

Does Anyone Know These Ladies?

Seems like some Psi Otes found themselves behind bars! My oh my --- what is going on here? There certainly are a lot of them!!!

We will have a Psi Ote detective investigate and give full details in the December Newsletter!  Sure hope we can get them released before Christmas -- wonder how Thanksgiving dinner was for these mates!

Operation Sock Monkey

Last winter, Tony and I were spending our last month of our winter escape in St Augustine. A friend, Gretchen, who happens to be an art therapist, sent me a sock monkey. I named him Nelson and created a Facebook page for him since he was to become Nelson - Traveling Sock Monkey. Tony and I took Nelson to the beach, and when we headed to New Orleans, we took photos along the way. Nelson wore cute clothes that other art therapists and friends had made for him. He is such a cool sock monkey!  He came back to Indiana, went swimming in our pool, met my grand children, and then got a job as an operative for Operation Sock Monkey. This group delivers sock monkeys to children around the world and presents sock monkey workshops to groups wanting to make sock monkeys to donate to their special organizations. We took a delegation of about 60 monkeys to Nairobi, Kenya, and conducted two sock monkey workshops with a group of teen girls and women. Those groups are now making sock monkeys to present to their various organizations.

OSM LogoOperation Sock Monkey Chicago/NW Indiana was born after that. We are looking forward to conducting sock monkey workshops with a few NW Indiana chapters so they may make sock monkeys for children in local burn units, domestic violence homes, and other worthy organizations. We'll also have them make one monkey each to donate to Operation Sock Monkey's international program.

Any chapter that's interested in participating, please share your interest with Margaret Larson, PIX National Editor. She will compile a list of interested chapters and get the ball rolling for Psi Iota Xi to participate in this fun, worthwhile project.

Supporting the Project

Has your chapter considered a way to support this project? The success of this new long term project will be dependent upon each sister and each chapter supporting the financial needs of this project. Perhaps you could deny yourself one restaurant cup of coffee or soft drink each week. (Average would be $1.50 x 2300 members x 52 weeks = $182,850) What a small sacrifice for each member. Even if it was done just once a month, this would be $41,400. Within two years, the long term project would be funded. Simply take a coin purse with you and when you order your water with lemon put the $1.50 in your coin purse; then, each month collect this $1.50 from each member at your chapter meeting! While this is just one idea, your chapter could come up with other creative ideas to support this national project without taking away from your many wonderful chapter projects! Be creative, be supportive; let's complete this project in two-three years!

Remember this is a $100,000 project that had a tremendous kick off at the 2012 Convention with the funds from Zeta Mu - Jasper, IN and Beta Delta - Van Wert, OH.  With their help, we have nearly $11,000 funding for this project! Share your chapter ideas with us for the next newsletter.
