Message from our National President - Kim Crawley
"I will not play at tug o' war. I'd rather play at hug o' war,
Where everyone hugs instead of tugs,
Where everyone giggles and rolls on the rug,
Where everyone kisses, and everyone grins, and everyone wins."
-- Shel Silverstein, Where the Sidewalk Ends
Wouldn't that be a wonderful life and world?! A place where everyone gets a long and everyone wins -- or is that a good idea? What lessons would we learn if we always got our own way, where no one ever lost a sporting event, a festival queen contest or our projects were always the ones we did good or bad?
I have had these very same thoughts and conversations with myself and with my kids over the years. I would have loved to have made cheerleader in 5th grade, but I didn't. When I was younger, I dreamed about dating the cutest, most popular boy in high school, marrying him and having his children, but I didn't. What about the times when your children didn't make the team and your heart ached for them? What did you tell them? Did you teach them to be sore losers and go beat up the other players? No, of course you didn't! What happened when your daughter's first boyfriend broke her heart? What did you tell her about this loss?
My point is just this: "life isn't fair, so just get over it" as Bill Gates once said. It isn't fair, but it's how you play the game. When I didn't make cheerleader, I was elected the class president and this was a much more prestigious role and what a great learning experience for me to lead others in my job and now as your national president! I also still feel like a cheer leader at times rooting my kids on and trying to lift you and your chapters. Read More

Importance of National Fees
- Fees assessed are based on the membership numbers submitted on the chapter's PCR, dated April 30th of each year.
- Fees for the fiscal Psi Ote year, 5/1/11 to 4/30/12 (last year) are not collected until November 2012. (Just like the federal and state income taxes we all pay, in Psi Otes our November fees pay for the past year.)
National Council recommends ALL FEES collected from members be placed in the chapter's GENERAL FUND. This will help to keep the General Fund "healthier" as many chapters choose to not increase their chapter "dues" even when operating costs are rising. A chapter may pay its National Project Fund fees from the chapter Project Fund, with or without moving the philanthropic portion of the dues to the Project Fund. ANY amount of money can be "moved" from the General Fund to the Project Fund. The opposite is NOT true. A CHAPTER MAY MOVE MONEY FROM THE PROJECT FUND TO THE GENERAL FUND IN ONLY TWO INSTANCES:
- profit from the chapter's philanthropic money-making projects -- choose one:
- either the exact amount of profit made from Psi Ote member purchases,
- or, up to 10% of profit, if you don't want to keep track of the exact amount,
- Up to ½ of cost of the two delegates attending state and national meetings and up to ½ the annual audit/review of chapter books and pre-convention report.
Allowing for these exceptions only, ALL other Project Fund monies must be spent on endeavors supporting the community, not a chapter. What your National Fees cover:
- General fees ($10/member)
- Maintaining the National Office and executive secretary
- Rent/lease fee (phone, utilities, and conference room use included)
- Mailings sent out by national officers (copier, paper, etc.)
- Mileage and expenses of Council for official visits, 4 Council meetings, and convention
- Helicon/Marketing fee ($3/member)
- Maintaining the National website
- Production and distribution of the Helicon
- Photographer's convention expense
- Philanthropic fees ($9/member)
- Projects voted on at convention
- Expense for National Project Screening Committee meeting to recommend project proposals to be considered at National Convention
- Meal and mileage for National Project Screening Committee meeting
- A portion of the AV fees for National Convention
- Mileage for National President and National Project Chair to attend and present checks from Psi Iota Xi to:
- Van Riper Lecture series
- Metropolitan Opera Regional Audition Finals
- Insurance Fees ($3/member)
- General Liability
- Excess Liability
- Property Insurance
- Director/Officer Liability
- Fidelity Bond for national officers
Importance of Reporting Membership Status Changes It is of the UTMOST IMPORTANCE, and in the BEST INTEREST of your chapter, to send out some sort of "Status Change" request in March, so that any changes in a member's status can be noted PRIOR to April 30, 2013. If a member requests a status change, and it is not voted on until May 1 or after, that change applies to your membership for the fiscal year, May 1st through April 30 of that following year. If you would like a sample "Status" form, let your National Treasurer know. Some chapters use the top half of a page for any status change, and the bottom half of the page for a "Fees/dues" statement.
Example: A member writes a letter, requesting to go Alumni, and turn it in April 20,2012. If it is not voted on by the chapter until after May 1, 2012, then she is still an "Active" member as of April 30, and will be included as Active on the PCR. The chapter will pay ALL FEES for her on the FEE statement due November 1, 2012.
If she turns in her letter in late March, 2012, and it's voted on in April 2012, then she will be Alumni as of April 30th, and NOT included as an Active member on the PCR due May 10, 2012. Bonding of Treasurers National Council also recommends all chapters bond their Chapter Treasurer. You can probably get an appropriate form from any local insurance agency.

The Tools of our Ritual
The other day, my sister, the preschool teacher, caught her six-year-old son trying to open a package of carrots with his teeth. "Teeth are jewels, not tools!" she scolded him, and It cracked me up to see him roll his eyes as he recited the last two words along with her!
As I was in the process of writing this article, it occurred to me how the items we use during our rituals aren't merely tools, but are really special pieces of our chapter history and should be treated as jewels.
Does your chapter own all of the jewels of our ritual? According to our Ritual book, each chapter should have the following for pledge, initiation and installation of officers: a Bible, our crest, a card with our Greek letters inscribed upon it, a book for signatures, a pin cushion, and a gavel. Wow - what Speech Pathologist would not enjoy these therapy tools!!!
|
Recently, our chapter met at the Daviess Community Hospital Speech & Hearing Department which we set up and funded MANY years ago and continue to support monthly. There were surplus funds available and we decided to purchase some much needed equipment for the department.
The therapists invited us to hold our October meeting there so we could tour the department and they could show and demonstrate the items we purchased. Here is a picture of the items which include an iPad and a VitalStim among many other things.
Alpha Phi, Fortville; Upsilon, Greenfield; and Theta Alpha, New Palestine
Three chapters join together to promote Psi Iota Xi by walking in the Riley Days Parade n Greenfield. What a great way for sisters to join together to promote all the awesome things we do for our communities.

Past National President Social with National Council
A social gathering of Past National Presidents (PNP) and National Council was held Sunday, October 28 at the Frankfort Public Library. This meeting was hosted by PNPs Rae Harris, Sara Hoffman Overway and Diana Lamb. The meeting was opened by PNP Sara asking each in attendance to introduce themselves and share something that the sister thought no other one in attendance would know about them. What was shared with sisters stays with sisters! Then PNP Sara shared a method of telling of an embarrassing moment while passing a ball of yarn -- ultimately each shared an embarrassing moment (again what is shared with sisters stays with sisters) but as the yarn unwound all found that we all were uniquely connected not withstanding our vast differences and unique common interests and ultimately the yarn displayed an outstanding spider web --- each thread connected! National President Kim Crawley presented a unique message of the importance of leadership -- comparing her 30 years of nursing and the vast changes over the years to our 100+ year organization and the need to keep the history of our organization alive while dealing with the need for change to allow our organization to grow and be sustained for years to come. National Vice President Marcia Mohre and National Secretary Cathy Etzler discussed the future of conventions and changes to meet the needs of our membership and chapters. Over the years, surveys received continued to echo some of the same concerns. PNPs and Council collectively agreed that change is needed and future conventions will display Council's respect of the survey comments. Look forward to upcoming information about the 2014 and 2015 Conventions that will be held in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. It hardly seemed possible that two and a half hours flew by with these discussion items and opening fun activities and no time left for other items on the agenda. But, the library reminded us we had to be out of the facility by 5 pm. Thus, all enjoyed a very delightful lunch prepared by the hostesses and continued to share and network while eating. It was a great meeting, and it was agreed by all that the productivity of this meeting warranted future meetings between the PNPs and National Council to share thoughts and concerns and to work collaboratively toward the future of Psi Iota Xi. It is essential that the past blend with the future and recognize that change is sometimes difficult but is the true basis of our success. Ultimately, all agreed that our future must be carefully carved to meet the anticipated needs to assure the existence of Psi Iota Xi and our mission to help those less fortunate for years to come. |
