A Message from our National President, Kim Crawley
 |
National President 2012 - 13,
Kim Crawley |
As I prepared and did work leading up to (and in anticipation of) becoming your National President, I better appreciated how the Olympians are feeling about now in London as they are on the cusp of the 2012 Summer Olympics. All of their hard work, sweat and determination put into getting to the Olympics is finally here! My "Olympics" is finally here! I hope and pray that the passion I have for Psi Iota Xi will make me the best choice for our organization. I promise to work hard towards our goals and for each of you.
As 2012 Olympian and two time Olympic gold medalist, beach volley ball player Kerri Walsh says "Passion is a huge prerequisite to winning. It makes you willing to jump through hoops, go through all the ups and downs and everything in between to reach your goal." Was it my goal to be National President? No, but to be a team leader and to make Psi Iota Xi the best philanthropic organization it can be and the best this country can offer. It is my goal to be the leader of this team. It takes all of us not just a President or leader. I look forward to working with you to accomplish our goals. Will you be on our team?!
In the Cooperation Poem by J. Mason Knox he discussed the teamwork involved in fighting a war for our country. Are we fighting a war? No, but we are battling against many foes-- -time constraints, more women working, kids activities, other organizations pulling at us for our time and attention but, in this poem it describes what it takes to be successful as a team whether in the Olympics, fighting wars or taking our organization to the next level.
- "It ain't the guns nor armament,
- Nor funds that they can pay,
- But the close cooperation,
- That makes them win the day.
- But the everlasting teamwork
I can just hear the Team USA coaches saying that to our current Olympians right now as they face a battle of their own, and I will say it to you-maybe your chapter is struggling with a fund raiser, getting new members or the passion has just gone out-it takes all of us on this Psi Ote team and not just me as the leader, or National Council but each of you and each of your chapters to make Psi Iota Xi a winner in the battle of Philanthropy for those less fortunate. So, we need to do what Olympians do---find the passion first. Because if you don't have the passion for something-what's the point?!
A quote by Dale Carnegie that I have tried to live by when I have felt the passion for something dwindle is this:
"Are you bored with life? Then throw yourself into some work you believe in with all your heart, live for it, die for it, and you will find happiness that you had thought could never be yours."
As I looked out at many of you at Convention 2012 I saw the true hearts and passion of each of you as we donated almost a million dollars this past year. The proud smiles you wore-priceless! So I know the passion isn't dead in the hearts of Psi Otes-we just need to work as a team and support each other as team mates do because honestly, you and the work we do in Psi Iota Xi is better than winning gold at the 2012 London Olympics any day!

A Message from Your National Editor
2012 National Convention Highlights: June 22- 24
The convention of 2012 is history and now we prepare to support our current President, Kim Crawley, regarding her 2012/2013 plans to join her aboard the PIX success train and the 2013 convention. Read about the wonderful contributions of our Psi Ote of the year and meet our new National Council members. In this issue, we've included some fun snapshots from Convention. However, the passing of our new long-term project was certainly the highlight of Convention. Here's hoping each chapter will do something special toward raising their contributions to this new, worthwhile project. How exciting that the project has already been jump started with almost $11,000 thanks to PNPs Deb Stemele and Kathy Miller and their chapter sisters. The ball is now in our court and may each chapter and each sister find it in their hearts to work hard to fully endorse this project. I know Dr. Gabel was truly excited, and as a speech pathologist with my limited expertise when it comes to the fluency issues, I can't help but imagine that this research will be vital to enhancing future understanding and therapy needs! Congratulations on this proposed and accepted project! Onward to another successful PIX year!

2012 Psi-Ote of the Year, Maggie Hormel
Hailing from Cambridge City, Indiana, Maggie has been a Beta Pi Chapter, SE district member since 1972 and has been active for 38 years with Honorary Active status. Among her many other Psi Iota Xi commitments, Maggie served as Recording Secretary this past year with National Conductress (now National Projects Chair), Brenda Bonner.
Following is the introduction Brenda gave during Convention: "Choosing the National Psi Ote of the Year is a process that begins several months in advance. A committee is chosen by the National President and chaired by the National Conductress. A letter and application are composed, sent to the National President for approval and then mailed in February to all chapters. After all chapters have submitted their candidates by the deadline and the applications are read by all committee members, the committee meets to choose the winner sometime in April or May. Preparations are then made with the winner's chapter, the convention chair, the National President, and any friends and family who may enjoy attending the presentation. That brings us here today.
Members of my committee are as follows - Diana Lamb, Past National President; Andrea Niedenthal, East Central District Officer; Kaye Robinson, Northeast District Officer; Margaret Larson, Editor; and Brenda Bonner, National Projects. You know, you think you are doing your part as a Psi Ote sister - then it comes time to read these applications. After reading each of them, I find myself wondering what more I could be doing for my chapter and this organization. These women are all so dedicated it's crazy - but most of all, inspiring - and they are all so very worthy of the honor of National Psi Ote of the Year. Trying to describe the winner is a difficult task. What I have on paper is just not adequate to describe her loyalty as a sister Psi Ote. And although we voted on her service for just this year, this year's winner has been a loyal member for quite a few years, 38 to be exact. As an Honorary Active member, she served as Recording Secretary this year along with working on four committees in her chapter. Her chapter states she is the picture of what a Psi Ote should be, has an "above and beyond" attitude, and selflessly steps up to lead the chapter. She pays attention to detail and comes up with creative ideas for fundraisers and meetings. Most importantly, she is truly dedicated to supporting speech and hearing, art, music, and literature. She steps in when others can't fulfill their duties, doing her part and then theirs also. Our honoree presented an idea for the community and helped raise the funds to make it a reality. She also organized all of the chapter's history records, moving them to the local library, and met with a state representative who complimented her as these records share an important story about Psi Iota Xi but the town and county as well. Please join me in congratulating the National Psi Ote of the Year - Beta Pi member, Maggie Hormel from Cambridge City, IN."
- What an exciting time for both Maggie and her chapter
- Now, start thinking about your nomination for 2013

Convention Mentoring Workshop-
Experienced Members
The Convention's Mentoring Workshop was well-attended and many positive ideas were shared on how to mentor new members. Share discuss the ideas with your chapter. The highlights are as follows:
Sponsors mentor new member for the first year.

* sit with new member to explain policies and activities
* chapter pays new member dues
* chapter pays State Convention dues
*
Rose Buddy Group
* all chapter members have a buddy they keep in contact with throughout the year

Spirit Jar
* all members pay $1 each meeting and share one that makes them happy
* money collected pays for babysitter
Support New Ideas
* even if your chapter has tried this idea before and failed
* even if you "know" the idea will fail (you may be surprised!)
* stay flexible and listen to all new ideas
* all women are welcome all of the time
* change chapter by-laws if need to be more welcoming
Technology
* use technology to communicate with younger members - text, email, Facebook, etc.
* email and/or text meeting reminders
* use the PIX website to post chapter's happenings
Prospective Members
* invite prospective members all year
* initiate throughout the year as needed
* be transparent
* get new members involved right away!

2012 Convention Memorial Service
What a meaningful display of our love and commitment to each sister that passed over the last year. Now that we have this great technology, we can honor those who have passed during the convention and also with more timely condolences here in the newsletter. Just send a brief history of her travels with Psi Iota Xi and most importantly a picture. Send directly to Margaret Larson, National Editor, m22larson@comcast.net. You could then print off the tribute to share with the family.
