NEWS from the CATHEDRAL
In observance of Columbus Day, the Cathedral and Cathedral Office will be closed on Monday, October 12th. We wish everyone a happy and safe Columbus Day.
Greetings!

As part of the community development component of our J2A Program, each year we offer a weekend retreat to Camp DeWolfe. This year is no exception.

Over the years, we have found that students who regularly participate in our J2A classes and retreats are significantly more comfortable in group discussions. They credit the experiences with helping them to strengthen their connection with God and each other as a faith community.

In the file attached here, you will find an overview of the weekend as well as the necessary permission forms for your child's participation. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Kristin Ochtera directly at 516.592.7033.

To confirm your child's participation, please respond via email to kochtera@incarnationgc.org  no later than October 18th.

Registration forms should be completed and returned with a check for $85.00 made payable to the Cathedral of the Incarnation.

J2A will be meeting this Sunday, October 11th from 4-5:30pm in Cathedral House.

I'd like to get an idea of how many people we will have considering it's a holiday weekend.

Please respond via email to kochtera@incarnationgc.org if your child will be attending.
I AM THE CATHEDRAL
As a young child, I attended St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Malverne; it was merely an underground structure. Growing up, I witnessed a lovely church built in its place. I was actively involved in the church choir, athletics program, and youth group and was its representative to the diocesan youth council which met at the cathedral. Thereupon my cathedral life began, attending meetings, reading at services, and enjoying the many social functions held for the diocesan youth.

While still a member of St. Thomas, it was my young daughter who asked us to find a church with a "real" Sunday school. We found it at the cathedral and have been active, loyal members ever since. I have fond memories of working at the Christmas and Memorial Day fairs, the progressive dinner held at the clergy's homes, the gala 100th year anniversary celebration held at the Garden City Hotel, the publishing of the church directory with photos of all the parishioners, the many social events hosted at the Cathedral House, and the wonderful clergy I have had the privilege to meet over the years.

It was during one of the clergical changes that my young husband died suddenly and I was saddened that I didn't have one of those wonderful clergy I knew to minister to us at that devastating time in our lives. We sought out other places to comfort us but found none and soon returned to our blessed cathedral. Canon Cayles comforted us when my mother passed away. Those were the difficult times.

Happy times and memories followed. Father Picken officiated at the beautiful wedding of my daughter 5 years ago. I was elected to the church Council in 2014, and I serve as a lector and usher. I have met so many wonderful people in the parish and truly feel that this is our home. I am a part of the cathedral, and it is an integral part of my life. In retrospect, I started my religious life in an underground church and now I attend this architectural wonder! I am inspired by its magnificence and warmed by the family in it. I am so happy to have Bruce, Michael, and Andrew at the helm and look forward to meeting the new dean. I hope they all have a long tenure here. Barbara Wade
