NEWS from the CATHEDRAL
I am the Cathedral because I came here in 2007 looking to reconnect with God, and to try and strengthen my relationship with Him. I am a seeker, and the seeking hasn't stopped once I decided to stay.

Like the Cathedral at that time, my soul was shrouded in a scaffolding that kept the light out. Once inside, I found welcoming faces, sweet notes of praise in the air, and an open invitation to all comers to take part in the Eucharist.

I am the Cathedral because when my wife and I climbed the chancel steps in June of 2012 to have our marriage blessed, God's presence flowed through the pews thus binding a family wound that without God's grace would have been left unbound. This place was the salve that soothed a pain and, in one short hour, provided the setting for reconciliation.

I am the Cathedral because I find solace in the Word when it is preached, forced laughter in the faces of our friends when priests try to make jokes from the pulpit, and nourishment in the Eucharist. I am the Cathedral because I have shared the tears in goodbyes to cherished friends, and smiles at the Baptism of new ones.

I try to take the Cathedral with me in all that I do beyond our walls - in my work and in my relationships. In our travels, Miriam and I seek to share our pride in our spiritual home. When we visit other churches, we try to be cognizant of the very high bar we measure all others against, and remember that we are blessed with so many riches by being able to call the Cathedral "home. "

I am called to be a steward of this special place, as an usher, a lector, a former Council member and warden, and most importantly as a Christian.

Parish Breakfast
Please join us on Sunday, September 13th at 9:00am in the Mercer School of Theology for our Parish Breakfast, all are welcome.

Hello Cathedral Family!
I hope you are all doing well and that you're enjoying the summer! I was able to get back to the Cathedral for Sunday services, this past Sunday, the 9th, and it was lovely to be back home. I can't believe that next week I'm heading back to Virginia for my second year of study at Virginia Theological Seminary and to start my time as seminarian at The Falls Church Episcopal Church in Falls Church, Virginia! It feels like just yesterday that I was getting ready to head off to school for year one. Thank you all for your continued prayers as I begin this next year in my spiritual journey.

This summer I have spent my two months home on Long Island participating in a CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) program through St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway. This CPE program has been one that is very unlike other CPE programs in which my fellow seminarians are taking part. Generally, one goes into these programs and does full time work at a hospital, 3 days of clinical rounds per week and two days of group work in the classroom. Bishop Provenzano wanted to change the program; he felt that there was a need for a parish-based component of Clinical Pastoral Education. So, I spent 3 days a week at St. John's hospital and two days a week at St. Gabriel's parish in Hollis, Queens.

While at the hospital I went on rounds during the week and visited with patients in the Emergency Room, Radiology, Clinic, and Wound Care departments. While on these rounds I would talk with patients, pray with patients, and sometimes, be there with families as their loved ones passed away. During group, we would go over case studies and discuss how our roles at chaplains developed and changed during our time at the hospital. It was a challenging but overall great experience at the hospital. At St. Gabriel's, under the watchful eye of Fr. Terence Lee, I was able to teach a bible study class every Wednesday and lead noonday prayer after each bible study session. Our bible study covered all of the Gospel of Mark in 5 sessions all through July. On Sundays, I participated in the liturgy, preached, and interacted with the people of St. Gabriel's. It was a lovely and very formative experience for me. I learned a lot about myself as a minister and as a teacher. My CPE experience this summer gave me the wonderful opportunity to renew and reinvigorate my call to the priesthood.

It has been a wonderful summer and I am very excited to get back to school next week. I want to let everyone at the Cathedral know that you all are in my prayers every day. I look forward to hearing about all the wonderful programs that will be taking place this coming program year, under the leadership of our new Dean, and to see you all very soon!

Grace and Peace,

Stephen
