NEWS from the CATHEDRAL

The Dean Search Committee Membership

Your Executive Committee takes great pleasure in announcing that the Search Committee for a New Dean has held its first meeting and is now actively engaged in preparing to receive nominations. The members are:

George Tietjen

My wife Pamela and I have attended the Cathedral of Incarnation since 1997 when our daughter Kaitlin joined the Girls Choir.  I am a Portfolio Manager with a New York based real estate investment management company and have been with the firm for 25 years. We reside in Floral Park, New York. During our time with the Cathedral, I served one term on Cathedral Council and was a member of the verger corps for a number of years. I also serve on the Board of Managers of Camp DeWolfe.

Sheila Bet
I was born and grew up in Scotland, where my father was a church organist and choirmaster for thirty years in two kirks, or churches. Our Sunday service and Sunday school formed the foundation of my childhood, and my mother, who still sings in her church choir at the age of eighty four, continues to be an active member of the Church of Scotland. I attended college in Edinburgh and moved to the United States as an adult, where I have been teaching the Gifted and Talented program in the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District for the past nineteen years.

Otis Thornhill

Elaine and I were welcomed by the Cathedral congregation when we visited in April 1992. We were especially interested in meeting the newly elected Bishop. Dean Wilshire invited me to join an outreach committee that would visit members of our congregation who were unable to attend services for health reasons. I completed my Eucharistic ministry training in 1995, and I continue in that ministry today. I served on Council from 1996-2000; served on Cathedral Chapter from 2001-2005; served on Council from 2007-2010.  I have been actively involved in our Stewardship ministry since 1996.

Kathaleen Mercer

My family (husband Greg, daughter Nicole) and I joined the Cathedral of the Incarnation when we moved to Garden City in 1999. I am a Senior Vice President with The NPD Group, Inc. a market information company. I have been with NPD for almost 30 years, including a part-time stint during the 2&1/2 years that we lived in Graz, Austria when Greg was a tenor soloist with the Graz Opera. We currently live in West Hempstead. I am a member of the Schola Cantorum, the Altar Guild and the Prayer Shawl ministry. I have also run the ticket booth for the Memorial Day Fair for the several years.

Richard Stelle

Liz and I started attending the Cathedral in late 2000. We had just moved to Malverne and were in search of a church home. Our first time at the Cathedral settled the deal. We were warmly greeted and welcomed, and it was clear that we would find a place of comfort and challenge in our lives in this place. I am particularly happy that the congregation has been included in finding a Dean this time, as we have always had Dean's dropped into place. Not that this has been disastrous, quite the opposite. But I think this process of introspection and prayer has been very important to the congregation, as invisible as it may seem at this moment. I have  served three terms on Cathedral Council, and since 2003 have served as a LEM and Eucharistic Visitor. I am currently President of the Cathedral Choirs Development Fund (CCDF). Our daughter Presley, now 12, was baptized at the Cathedral in December of 2003, and now sings weekly in the choir. Lastly, I retired from working in the field of education of the Deaf in 2012, and would love to see our accessibility avenues expanded at the Cathedral. We feel blessed to be among fellow worshipers and seekers and find great comfort in the experiences we have had and continue to have at the Cathedral.

Elizabeth Schumacher

My husband, Kris, and I joined the Cathedral congregation in 2006, a decision we are very glad to have made. Our daughter, Saera, and son, James, were welcomed into the church family in 2008 and 2010 respectively. I have been blessed to be able to spend the last several years at home with our children, though my previous professional experience ranges from the arts to nonprofit outreach services to education. I am currently volunteering as an ESL instructor through a local nonprofit organization, an experience which has proven incredibly rewarding. At the Cathedral, I have served as a lector since 2007, and I am honored to have now been chosen for the search committee for the new Dean.

Christine Scott

After marrying Andrew Scott in 1993, a cradle Episcopalian ( and member of the Men's Choir) the Cathedral became our home and we have been active ever since.  Our family consists of 3 teenagers, all of whom have been active with Church School, Christian formation programs, the Choir program and have served as Acolytes. I was received into the Episcopal Church, have served one term on Council and I am committed to the Stewardship ministry of our Cathedral.  In a more visible way, I serve as an Acolyte, LEM and Altar Guild member.

Please take a moment to thank them for their willingness to serve in this important capacity. In the near future you will receive a copy of the search brochure and it will be posted on the Cathedral website.

Lenten Message From The Presiding Bishop

Lent is about to begin. That word in English comes from an Old English word that means "to lengthen," and it's a reminder of the days getting longer as we move toward summer out of the dark of winter.

But in a number of other languages, particularly Spanish and French, the word for "Lent" reflects "forty days," "cuaresma." Forty days of wandering in the desert, forty days of Jesus out in the desert.

It's also about a journey. And it's a journey that is about enlightenment if we're willing to think about it that way.

Lent is an ancient tradition of solidarity and preparation for those who look forward to Baptism at the Easter Vigil. It has always been a time for prayer and study, fasting, self-denial, and alms-giving, sharing what we have with those who do not have. Prayer is an opportunity to reflect on who walks with us in the desert, who brings light into the world. Study is an opportunity to do the same kinds of things looking at the history of our tradition, where have human beings found light and direction in their journey through this world. Fasting and self-denial are an inward-reflection on what it is that keeps us in the dark, or what it is that keeps us directionless, or that keeps us overly self-focused. And it becomes an invitation to turn outward and share what we have with those who have not. To build solidarity among God's people and the rest of the earth.

One of the most memorable Ash Wednesdays I ever spent was in San Jose, Costa Rica, in a school for children. I was asked to place ashes on the foreheads of toddlers. It was a provocative experience in the deepest sense, reminding very small children that they are mortal.

That cross that comes on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday is a reminder of the cross that's put there at Baptism. You are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ's own forever. The cross that comes at Ash Wednesday is a reminder that you are dust and to dust we shall return, that we share that dust with every other human being who has ever walked this planet, that we share that dust with the stars and the planets, that we share that dust with all that has been created. We are made for relationship with creator and creation.

Lent and cuaresma is a journey to walk toward that light. May it be a blessed one this year.

Presiding Bishop and Primate
