When Tonya Faulkner became a client at CCCS, she wasn't behind on her bills, but she had 32 credit cards and was thousands of dollars in debt. She says, "Habitat for Humanity referred me for credit counseling. I'd consulted with them earlier to see what I needed to do to buy a home. That was always my goal. After taking a look at my finances, they said if I wanted to qualify for a mortgage, I first needed to pay down my credit cards. They were right. Even though I was keeping up with payments to creditors, it was taking everything I had. At the end of the month, there was nothing left for essentials or to put into savings toward a down payment."
