From the Executive Director:
Dear Colleagues,
First, I would like to send our thoughts and prayers to any of our schools that are being affected by the storms impacting VA and NC as well as all of the friends and relatives in the Northeast that are dealing with this storm. We will hope that you and your families come through this safe and sound.
I arrived home (after nearly 30 hours on various planes) Sunday after presenting at two conferences for International Schools. The first was in Dubai for the Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools (NESA); and then on to Johannesburg for the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA). In each case about 40 business officers from the region attended. We presented on a wide variety of topics including Technology, Risk Management, Board Reporting, Data Collection and more. If these topics sound familiar it is because the challenges faced by schools all over the world are the same as each of you face every day.
The work with the Business Officers was a great learning opportunity for me as well. I believe the most rewarding were the several hours I spent with Johnny Smith, Bursar (Bursars are just like Business Officers at our schools) at St. Stithians College in Johannesburg, South Africa, touring his school. (http://www.stithian.com/index.php) I had the opportunity to visit and speak with the grades K-2 technology teacher. The computer lab was relatively small and just a bit hectic with 2nd grade students working with LEGO robotics. They would build the robot - and with a USB connection - make this appear on the computer screen. The students were working individually and in groups, with the teacher moving among them; helping where required, encouraging others and generally just ensuring that the students were each making appropriate progress and also having fun. It was a great display of student centric learning in an environment that encouraged creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, teamwork, etc. By the way, she had about 25 students in this room. I encourage you all to visit the classes in your school and other schools - it is a great learning opportunity!
Sincerely,
Marc Levinson
