JESUS, THE ULTIMATE VOLUNTEER

SCRIPTURE: "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many." - MARK 10:45

I read a lot of books by Joyce Carol Oates who tells a good story with wise philosophies thrown in to catch the reader off guard. Here's an example I recently found: "Jesus Christ (was) a volunteer in the salvation of mankind."

Jesus intervened in "the spiritual crises of mankind," but His "volunteer" work was often misunderstood, and Jesus was crucified. We all know, however, that the crucifixion was not the end and that His Resurrection was a reward for us all.

What better example than Jesus do we have to affirm volunteering - to serve others rather than to be served! Often volunteering can be challenging, even scary. But when I volunteer, I almost always receive much more than I give.

It is truly better to give than to receive, to serve rather than be served. This, in part, is what Jesus means to me. He was the Ultimate Volunteer!

PRAYER: Thank you God for sending your Son Jesus to teach us the meaning of volunteering in Your service. Help us to make connections that benefit others and give meaning to our lives.  AMEN.
