HOW I SEE JESUS

SCRIPTURE: "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me."  - MATTHEW 25:35

One day I was approaching the intersection of Waldo Road and 39th Avenue and I noticed an elderly man standing on the corner, holding his hat out. I admit, I don't always like to give directly to people who are panhandling. But there was no pressure from him, and as my car rolled to a stop, I felt compelled to offer him something. I rolled down my window and he made eye contact with me. To my surprise, his eyes spoke volumes to me.

It is often said the eyes are the windows of our souls. This gentleman's eyes were filled with gratitude and I felt for that brief moment a connection. I've seen that look before.

How do I see Jesus? I see him in the faces of people who are hungry, sick and in prison. I also see him in the faces of my friends and acquaintances who are going through divorce, bankruptcy and grief. Throughout Jesus' earthly life, he made a point of spending time with people who were hurting. And he asks us to do the same: "whatever you do for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." - Matthew 25:40.

Jesus is with the brokenhearted. If that happens to be you today, then know that Jesus is near.

PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for staying close to me through every challenge that life brings.  Please strengthen me in my troubles so that I may show the same love and compassion to others in their troubles. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
