Observe Those Who Do it Well

Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night... then you will be prosperous and successful (Joshua 1:8).

Careful observation of those who do something well can be of greatest importance - which is why we are reminded to "fix our eyes on Jesus" (Hebrews 12:2) because He is the model for our living as God intended. As I mentioned on Tues, the Wright brothers knew this truth and spent hours upon hours upon hours observing birds flying; all kinds of birds. And they didn't just notice their wings, as many contemporaries did, they noticed that they adjusted, albeit microscopically with the wind currents to fly almost effortlessly. This observation, with the intent to "become like" the birds in some sense, led to their being able to fly.

Hours of observation of those (in this case, birds) who were experts. Brother Lawrence learned to "practice the presence" of Christ and the Holy Spirit in his work in the kitchen of his monastery - and everywhere he was, and became more like Jesus. Thomas 'A Kempis wrote the classic: "The Imitation of Christ" which has inspired generations to want to become more like Jesus. In my high school MYF in our little Methodist Church, we read the book, "In His Steps," and asked "What would Jesus Do?" It shaped our lives - then and continues to do so Who are you watching? Are they helping you become more like Him - or less? Who is observing you? What do they see?

Love and prayers, Dan
