December 1, 2015

Worship: Sundays @ 8:15 am, 9:40 am, 11:00 am | Wednesdays @ 6:35 pm
Dear Trinity Family,

I love the glorious season of Advent - the music, the lights, the joy, hope and promise.  My thanks to Jim Cook for editing the wonderful Advent Devotional, "Come and Worship,"  that YOU, the members of Trinity have written.  You can get a hard copy at Church, or receive it as  our Daily Scripture Emails (DSE's) - if you're not signed up for those, you can do so  here. In addition, I'm asking everyone to read the best Life of Christ ever penned - the Gospel of Luke during Advent: One chapter a day, starting today; 24 chapters, completing on Christmas Eve.  Read it as if for the very first time. God will amaze you!

Be sure to read all of this Tuesday Word to learn about all the Advent/Christmas opportunities.  I especially encourage you to plan ahead for the Christmas Concert with combined Choirs and Exaltation Ringers on December 13 at 11:00 worship and then the dinner and concert on December 16 - reserve your tickets for the dinner here.

It seems this notion of retirement is catching on - I just learned from Jim Cook that he, too, will be retiring at the end of December (we will be celebrating the ministries of Jim and Linda Cook, Rev. David and Donna Leonard, and also the dedicated head ushering of Jack and Laura Shaw with a reception on December 13 between services). Here are "words of gratitude" from Jim:

15 years of gratitude sums up much of my feeling about the time I have been able to be a part of the Trinity Staff. The quality and commitment of the staff as a group is so superior. The friendships I have been able to develop within the staff have been a highlight of my time here. Being a staff member has also allowed me to get to know so many in the church family that I would otherwise not know. The sense that we are all focused on accomplishing the same goals of excellence has been inspiring. The variety of involvement I have known during my time here has been wonderful. The great thing is that I will have continued connection both here and at the Conference level beyond retirement. I'm sure the blessings of being a part of Trinity will only continue. That feeling makes me say again, a very sincere, Thank you. Since Linda and I will remain an active part of the Trinity family, I look forward to seeing you at church as usual.
Fondly, Jim

Love and prayers,

A Message from Rev. Aaron
Email | Blog | Twitter

I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday. Our family sure did. We watched this week's 9:40 service online from my Dad's house - what a beautiful start to Advent! It made me feel an even greater sense of excitement for all that is in store for us this wondrous season! Come thou long expected, Jesus!
  • I finally was able to write the next installment on my blog about our trip to Malawi. This one is about our time with World Vision and contains several photographs of Janet Holley and Barbara Inskip meeting their sponsored children. You can read it here.
  • I'm looking forward to preaching at the 6:35 service tomorrow night in the chapel, as we kick off the Advent season with a sermon titled "Make Ready Your Hearts" on Luke 21:25-36. Hope to see you then!
  • If you've not yet picked up your Stronger Than Ever photo, please do so from the table at the back of the worship center this Sunday. Beginning next week, they will be available at the front desk.
  • We've created a smart phone lock screen image that is consistent with this year's theme for Advent and Christmas (Come and Worship). You can download it here, I encourage you to use this as a daily prayer throughout the season.

Grace and peace be with you,
Rev. Aaron

  • Advent Conspiracy is a global movement of people and churches shifting the Christmas narrative from shopping and consumption to Worshiping Fully, Spending Less, Giving More, and Loving All.  This year at Trinity the Advent Conspiracy focus will be Faith Mission, a church and neighborhood collaboration on NE 15th Street.  Mission box donations on December 6, 13, and 20 will support the work of Faith Mission.  Over the next three Sundays we'll learn about different aspects of this Trinity-led local mission, including its purpose, people, partnerships, and programs.
Faith Mission
Ward Simonton

As a community development initiative, Faith Mission draws on information from a variety of resources to enhance our understanding of the neighborhood.  The better our understanding of both the strengths and the challenges of the neighborhood, the better we can focus to enhance well-being.  What does a snapshot of the area within walking distance of the Faith Mission facility on NE 15th Street look like?
  • A mixed-income neighborhood with a middle class of around 250 families, yet over 400 families have an average household income of only $16,000 per year.
  • There is an elementary school (Rawlings) with a history of low overall student performance but now has a wonderful new fine arts program backed by strong leadership and committed faculty and staff.
  • 60% of families with children are single parent households (and closer to 80% for low income families), yet there is an early learning center expanding to support parents in a variety of positive ways.
  • Crime includes battery/assault, narcotics, and theft and there is a gang presence; however, there are growing positive partnerships among diverse organizations (churches, nonprofits, public school system, and city departments) and neighborhood residents.
Faith Mission is serving the neighborhood primarily through programs for children that also include family outreach.  As relationships are built and our understanding increases, partnerships and work will expand in increasingly impactful ways for children, youth, and families.
