 Witness

And Saul (Paul) was there, giving approval to Stephen's death (Acts 8:1)

The new Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church is a remarkable person named Michael Curry.  He is an African American from North Carolina.  His sermon installation sermon is outstanding and can be seen here

His closing story is an awesome story of non-traditional, but really important witnessing.  Back in the 1930's and 40's, pre- Martin Luther King, pre- Rosa Parks, pre-1964 civil rights, an African American couple came into an Episcopal Church in North Carolina, the only black couple in the church.  The man was studying for the Baptist ministry.  At the end of the service, people were invited to come forward for holy communion, where they drink wine from a common cup.  His wife got up to go forward.  He thought, "Oh no, I wonder how this is going to go here."  He observed carefully.  The person in front of his wife received the bread and then the cup.  Would his African American wife be offered the cup?  She was offered the cup and drank.  "What would the next person do?"  The next person took the cup and drank.

That's the day, that African American couple became Episcopalian - because of the witness of loving inclusion.  That couple had two children, both sons, one of which is the new Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church.

May your life and mine, your actions and mine, be a witness to the Christ who loves us and gave Himself for all.  Amen.

Love and prayers, Dan
