Service

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds?  Can such faith save that person? (James2:14)

Recently, Ward Simonton (Ph.D.) shared with us in the recent Tues Word, words from the "Oath of Compassionate Service" that organizations have found helpful in providing guidelines for service.  I find it helpful, too and share it with you as a part of our focus on Service:

* I will never do for others what they can do for themselves.
* I will limit one-way giving to crises and seek always to find ways     for legitimate exchange.
* I will take the time to listen and learn so that my actions will         strengthen rather than weaken those I serve (with).
* I will put the interests of the poor above my own (and my             organization's) self-interest even when it means setting aside my     own agenda.
* I will seek ways to empower by hiring, lending, and investing and   offer gifts sparingly as incentives to reinforce achievements.
* Above all, to the best of my ability, I will do no harm

We are becoming more and more aware of a reality called "Toxic Charity" - that hurts rather than helps in the name of serving, that increases dependence rather than independence, and this serves as a helpful reminder to us to always find the right balance in our serving.
