Worship: Sundays @ 8:15 am, 9:40 am, 11:00 am | Wednesdays @ 6:35 pm | Fridays @ 7:00 pm
Dear Friends,

I share with you five things:

1. Several of you asked about the book I mentioned Sunday; it's "100 Places to See in Your Lifetime" by Life - America the Beautiful.  The movie I mentioned was "McFarland."  It's the true story of the town of McFarland, CA, and their high school, made up almost entirely of Mexican Farm Workers, who win Nine State Cross Country Championships.  Great movie.

2.  We need you - to help us be exceptionally welcoming!  The new Welcome Center will be completed in mid-August; here's what we need:
 A.  80 Greeters - your team will be "on" once or twice a month.
 B.  20 Golf Cart Drivers - you'll be "on" once a month or so.
 C.  20 Coffee makers/servers - you'll be on once every 6 weeks.
Please email my assistant, Tammy and say "Yes, sign me up!"  We will have an orientation meeting over lunch on Sunday, Aug. 9 at noon.
 D.  Wear your name tag.  We're getting a machine that will make them "on the spot" for $2.00.  It should be here in a couple of weeks. We'll let you know.

3. It's not too late to order an "engraved brick" - for around the Welcome Center, but the cutoff is now July 20, so order it today - either online or by emailing Tammy.  They're $100.  Maybe for your children, your Grandchildren or someone else.  So far we have 105 orders.

4. If you're not getting the DSE, I encourage you to do so.  Here's why:  On Sunday, I encouraged everyone, in the spirit of Elijah, to "listen daily for the "still, quiet, whisper" of God.  Each DSE will be a Scripture of God speaking to someone, and that will become the catalyst to each of us "hearing" the whisper of God.

5. Finally, the window for signing on to the Chile/Argentina (January 16 - 30) trip is August 15.  Brochures are in the church office.

God bless, Dan

P.S. I've prepared a second installment in our conversation on the Supreme Court Decision on Same Sex Marriage, and will be sending it out later today in a special Emessage.

A Word from Rev. Aaron
Friends, it sure has been a busy summer and it doesn't appear it will let up anytime soon. I pray that all of you are enjoying yourselves and find glorious rest and renewal along the way.

I'll be preaching at the 6:35 service on Wednesday and in the Worship Center on Sunday, both times with sermons from passages on the Sermon on the Mount. I've really enjoyed looking at this "greatest sermon in the history of ever" and I'm looking forward to sharing with you. See you then!

One more thing, we continue now with our "Summer of Shorts" and this week's video focuses on the third component of our membership covenant - gifts. I've found that tithing is something that many preachers are hesitant to talk about because of the misconception that "money is all that the church cares about." The video rightly points out another way of looking at tithing - we aren't giving God 10%, rather God has given us 90%. I like that. And I like donuts. Enjoy the video.
Missions
  • This week's Mission Box is for the Fisher House Foundation.  The Fisher House Foundation donates "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to loved ones at the most stressful time - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.  For more information please visit the National Fisher House Foundation website

  • Family Promise (IHN) will begin serving homeless children and their families again when the first guests arrive at Trinity on Sunday, July 19.  Opportunities are available to serve as hosts in the evening, overnight, or on Saturday, July 25.  Several drivers to transport guests each morning and afternoon are especially needed.  Please consider helping to make Trinity a "place to call home" for these families in need. For more information, or to volunteer, please contact Marilyn Clugston.

Faith Mission

Faith Mission, located at 3701 NE 15th Street, is a church and neighborhood collaboration.  Last week I wrote how partnering with others to serve in the neighborhood is essential (and scriptural!) for Faith Mission to fulfill its purpose, and that these partnerships can take many forms - with residents, with nearby schools, with organizations, and with churches.  As an example, we've continued discussions with Greenhouse Church's local missions team and together we've identified mentoring elementary students as a potential area of partnering.  We're going to be working during the summer with Rawlings' leadership on organizing a mentoring program to begin in the fall.  Another example of partnering is our petition drive to hopefully bring the UF Mobile Outreach Clinic weekly to the neighborhood.  In addition to the work of Faith Mission to gather signatures for the petition, staff and residents in two nearby apartment complexes, Rawlings Elementary leadership, and a nearby church all actively worked to inform the neighborhood and gather signatures as well.  We'll present our "case" and the petitions to UF later this week.

This week at Faith Mission:

  • Thanks to Dick Scheaffer the effort is underway to utilize a variety of data to help Faith Mission better understand our neighborhood.  Analyzing data related to families, economics, health, and education will supplement our surveys and our conversations with people who live and work in the area.
  • Some new furnishings (chairs and tables) are in place, and we're looking forward to a volunteer team getting started on a new stage in the main building!
  • Thanks both to the Children's Ministry and the Sports Ministry personal item bags are being created for children in the neighborhood who can, at times, not have access to basic hygiene supplies.  These will be kept at Faith Mission and at one of the local apartment complexes.
  • Hospitality Team Members - please be on the lookout for an email later this week about several events coming up in August that will need your help!

  • With the anticipated completion of Trinity's new Welcome Center in mid-August, we are using the month of July to gear up to become "extravagantly welcoming."  And we need YOU to participate.  Here are our needs: a.) 80 people to agree to be an official greeter at least one Sunday a month (this means you arrive 20 minutes early or stay 20 minutes after worship, and greet, either in the parking lot or around the Hub/Welcome Center.  We're hoping young families with children will do this, singles, older, all ages.  b.) 20 people to be on our Golf Cart team ministry. c.) 20 more coffee makers and servers to give one Sunday every two months. d.) All 140 of you who agree to serve - attend a "Welcoming Orientation" luncheon on Sunday, August 9 at noon. You'll learn specifics and answers to all your questions. e. 1,000 people to wear your name tag every Sunday.  Don't have one?  No worries. We're getting a machine that will make you one, on the spot, for $2.00.  It will be here before August 1. Email Tammy if you would like to volunteer.
  • Are you interested in joining Trinity UMC? If you want to learn more about the vision, mission and ministries of Trinity, we invite you to attend one of our upcoming Coffee with the Pastors, a casual gathering in which you'll learn more about the United Methodist Church, who we are at Trinity and what is expected of members. The class is designed for visitors and gives you the opportunity to meet our ministers and learn about the many ways to become involved in our church family. The next Coffee with the Pastors' date is TBA.  To register for Coffee with the Pastors click here or email  Carmen Nelson to receive the form via email.   We would love to meet you and to welcome you into the membership of our church!  Let us know if you need childcare.
