From the archives: AWB in Biloxi
The 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina is a good time to revisit one of AWB-Oregon's earliest endeavors. Following the hurricane, AWB teamed with AIA-Oregon to organize safety and damage assessment training for Portland-based volunteers. More than 80 architects, engineers, utility workers, and first-responders took a six-hour course, "Safety Evaluation of Buildings after Windstorms and Floods," and many went on to work with recovery organizations in the Gulf Coast region. Twelve AWB volunteers, with travel funding from AIA-Oregon, went to the Biloxi, Mississippi, area and provided damage assessment assistance to homeowners and small businesses, enabling their insurance payments to move forward.
