The AWB Nepal team is developing its second school prototype for BuildOn, a nonprofit group that provides after school programs in the United States and supports the construction of community schools in some of the most underserved regions of the world. AWB's first prototype for BuildOn was developed for Haiti. It is designed to resist earthquake and hurricane forces and be easily constructed with local labor and materials in remote locations. The second prototype is intended for the Kanchanpur, Kailali, Bardia, Banke, and Dang provinces in Nepal, where BuildOn schools will support the communities of the Tharu people. This lowland tropical area, known as the inner Terai, is located in the Karnali, Babai and Rapti river drainage area on the border with India. The Nepal schools will consist of three classrooms, consistent with BuildOn's program requirements, and will be constructed of reinforced concrete, masonry, steel joist and uPVC roofing. The new schools in Nepal will begin construction in early 2014.
Team members for the Nepal project are Gauri Rajbaidya, Gloria Mortera, Eric McDonnell and Abraham Rodriguez, as well as Craig Totten, John Medvec and Jeff Wilkes, veteran AWB BuildOn team members who completed the Haiti school design.
BuildOn is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education. For more information about BuildOn visit http://www.buildon.org.
