Martin Luther penned these words; "This the most distinguished jewel among all the Psalms of consolation."  He wrote this referring to Psalm 91.  This particular Psalm is anonymous and without title.  It was the practice of Jewish interpretation to assign the authorship of an unnamed Psalm to the writer of the last named Psalm.  If this applies in this case, the writer of Psalm 91 would be Moses, the Man of God.

Psalm 91: 1-2 says, "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in Him will I trust."  These two verses hold the promise of great blessing to the believer.  But pay close attention, this is not a blanket promise to every believer, but only to those who are willing to make the secret place their abode; the place where they reside, the place where they sit down and remain.  The word abide in Hebrew is (lun) which signifies to pass the night.  If you want the benefits of the secret place in God you cannot do a "drive by" on Sunday morning.  The blessed peace and power of God's presence comes from making and taking the time for intimate personal fellowship with the Lord.  It means reading the Word of God, spending time in prayer, no piano, no organ, no worship leader, no preacher, just you and God, with you seeking Him and waiting for Him to speak to you.  These verses speak of a consistent and continuos dwelling and not just a temporary visitation in the time of trouble.  This promise is for you!  How often do you turn off the television, the radio, your CDs and just get quiet before the Lord with your Bible?  I am suggesting that you try it.  Don't come with your full agenda, to tell the Lord everything that you want Him to do.  Just come with an open heart, seeking His will, seeking to know His plan and purpose for you.  Read the Word, wait, pray, wait, worship, wait.  God will show up.  His peace will overtake you like a wave and His power will flow through you like never before.  Dwelling in the secret place brings with it the revelation of God for your life like nothing else can.  That's why in the next verses the Psalmist says after spending time with Him, I can now say, "He is my refuge, my fortress, my God, in Him will I trust."  It is there in the secret place, your secret place that God reveals Himself to you!    Do you have a secret?
