The Book of Psalms shines a spotlight on the human condition, in ancient times and even today. It points us to the fact that mankind, even those who love God are prone to failure.  Yet it also shows us that a faithful and loving God never gives up or changes His mind about us.  The following are categories of the Psalms.
  •   Devotional-  precious and personal promises for the believer
  •   Penitential -  show us the need for and the benefits of repentance
  •   Imprecatory - pray against evil
  •   Degree of Ascent - songs for the higher choir
  •   Hallelujah-  songs sung on the night of the Passover
  •   Historical - depict the history of Israel
  •   Messianic- forecast the presence and person of Jesus, the Messiah in the New Testament.
Let's spend the next few moments on a Devotional Psalm. Psalm 100 is a universal call to all people to give thanks to the Lord Jehovah. It is a reminder that praise and worship should not only come from a place of obedience and debt, but rather from a place of gratitude. "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands, serve the Lord with gladness, come before His presence with singing." The Psalmist is saying let the whole earth join in. If the Lord has done anything for you, you ought to thank Him. All that we have, God gave us, all that we are , God made us. We ought to thank Him because His mercies are new every morning. The Lord is good, so let everything that has breath give Him what He is so worthy of, the fruit of our lips, praise for His mighty acts and for His excellent greatness. In the worst of times, He is  good. Just as the writers of the Psalms put their hopes and fears in the Hands of the Lord, let us join them today and everyday and entrust Him with all that we have as well. He does not promise and not perform.
