You Are Part of Idyllwild History
|
Dave Pelham, ICF Board Chairman and this month's guest editor, met with Bob Smith, board member of the Idyllwild Area Historical Society, to talk about his involvement with the Historical Society and a special project which will make much of Idyllwild's recorded history available online.
Bob Smith
Bob's interest in local history and historical research stems from the discovery of old family papers belonging to his grandparents, Frank and Mabel Moote, who were early Idyllwild property owners and developers.
The award-winning Historical Society formed and began to gather historical information on our area in 2000 and, by 2003, property had been purchased and the museum opened. In 2005, the family of Avery Field, Riverside's most noted commercial photographer, donated his photo library to the Historical Society. These photos of old Idyllwild were digitized and restored by John Drake, adding immensely to the compilation. With the opening of the Idyllwild Area Historical Society Museum and its collections, the focus shifted from data-gathering to developing ways to display and communicate it.
Bob, along with Carolyn Levitski and a very active and productive board, has continued to explore possibilities and expand the museum's efforts, including the building of the Archive Center in 2010, the publication of a book, Idyllwild and the High San Jacintos, which Bob authored, and a newsletter. For more information about IAHS projects, visit the Idyllwild Area Historical Society website.

ICF supports the Historical Society's Digital Town Crier Archive Project
An innovative project that has received ICF support is the scanning of old issues of the Idyllwild Town Crier into a searchable online database. A subscription to the database allows a researcher, or anyone interested, to dig back into old Town Crier stories as well as those of many other newspapers to ferret out information and details of past people and events. This database will be an ongoing project that will complement the IAHS museum, collections, and continuing research as a great asset to the Idyllwild community. There will likely be more awards coming to this gem of Idyllwild resources!

What a team we already have on the ICF Board, and what a powerhouse we find in our new members! We have some willing and very capable folks to fill vacancies and departures of members finishing their terms at the end of 2012. All new board members will begin two year terms. With pleasure and anticipation, we welcome Bill Sperling, Mary Collier, Jeri Sue Haney and Marshall Smith.
Continuing in the same capacity as last year, we welcome back our officers: Dave Pelham (Chairman), Jim Taylor (Vice Chairman), Diane Suechika (Recording Secretary) and Ed Hansen (Corresponding Secretary).

Dave Pelham, ICF Board Chairman and Guest Editor
A career in education brought me to Idyllwild in 1986 as a teacher and then program director at Morning Sky Residential Program. After I retired in October, 2006, I launched into a frantic effort to catch up with neglected passions. I finished writing a novel, built two more guitars (I had built four guitars years before), resumed classical guitar lessons, recommitted to running and biking to stay in shape, did more flying in our plane, more traveling, etc. and generally followed my whims. But all along I had been involved with a few community boards and volunteer projects, so when invited to join ICF, it felt like a natural step in the right direction.
As an ICF member I have developed our website (please visit www.idyllwildcommunityfund.org and find our PayPal link!) and tried to contribute in other ways. I have one more year on the board and as Chairman I hope to help make it our best year yet!
