HCA Today

Winter 2014

2014 is shaping up to be a banner year for art & culture (A&C) in Highlands County. This is the year we come into our own as part of the tourist mix.

Over $100,000 has been designated this year (and a similar amount next year) to be used exclusively for promoting Highlands County as an art & cultural destination. This promises to have a major impact on the growth and vibrancy of our A&C community.

The TDC and the A&C community are now working together toward a common goal.  A vision realized. Things are lining up to bring us to the next level. See the Year in Review and Projections story in this issue.

Speaking of visions realized, each issue of HCA Today will have a story on the inspirational people who pioneered the growing A&C community in Highlands County. It is my honor to dedicate this issue to Bob and Harriet Porter, the force behind Lake Placid's rise to the international spotlight. See Honoring the Porters.

Each issue will also have an introduction to a HCA Board member.  Meet Bob Fishell, artist, business man, Avon Park resident and Chair of our Business Development Committee.

This newsletter is the only publication targeted to the A&C community in Highlands County. It is your voice. We welcome your ideas, opinions, thoughts and submissions to share with our creative community.

In earnest,

Fred Leavitt, President

Honoring the Porters
By Sherry Carlson, photo Wayne Graham

On January 31, 2014 a grateful gathering of friends from Lake Placid and beyond honored the Porters. Bob and Harriet, founders of the Lake Placid Mural Society, have for over twenty years been the driving force behind transforming the financially stressed town of the '90's into a nationally recognized tourist attraction.

Artistic acknowledgement of the Porters' contributions to the community came in the form of its 46th mural "TOWN OF MURALS-HOW IT ALL BEGAN." Artist Keith Goodson, who has painted several of the Lake Placid murals, placed portraits of the Porters "center-top" to emphasize their importance. The mural is appropriately located on the Chamber of
Commerce Building at
18 North Oak Avenue.

The Porters work behind the scenes as well as in public. For many years
the Porters have mentored American and international organizations interested in developing historic murals in their locales. The Caladium Arts and Crafts Co-op was the brain child of Harriet's. Fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and marketing activities continue as major tasks.

The Porters' creative vision brought Tour Lake Placid into existence.
Recently and largely due to Harriet's work,
Lake Placid became a "sister city" (town) to Lake Placid, N.Y. The Porters were also central to
developing and promoting Lake Placid's campaign and entry into the
national competition sponsored by Readers' Digest which resulted in its earning the title of 'America's Most Interesting Town.'"

The Heartland Cultural Alliance greatly appreciates the Porters' dedication
to the growth, promotion and support of the arts in
Highlands County. HCA

as an organization has benefited by their example.

Divinely Driven Awareness Center & Co-op
By Sherry Carlson

"Be Aware. Do not let your days slip by aimlessly, be ever on the lookout

Divinely Driven
William shows his Florida Folk Art Faces creation

for the meaning behind every episode which comes along. Life is ... given so that you may welcome and rejoice in every experience...awaken the Love and Light of God in your heart."            White Eagle

The above quotation aptly applies to the spirit in which Steve Safrans, Gingerlee Dread and Chris Williams go about the continuing creation of Divinely Driven Awareness Center & Co-op  and it's programming . The expanding list of programs include: Reiki Circle, Introduction to Acrylics, Meditation,  Florida Folk Art Faces, and Property/investment. See sidebar for program scheduling

Divinely  Driven welcomes all persons interested using their talents and imaginations to benefit others. Future plans are limitless and can only prosper our Highlands County community.

Steve Safrans, envisions open forum discussion of alternative health aids and a variety of seminars. His own journey of investigation began as he witnessed the "miracle" of his father's 8 year cancer-free state in the 1970's after being told he only had two months to live. Studies in Texas, Pennsylvania, Indiana, North Carolina and Florida of varying modalities led Steve to his certification as a Natural Health Professional .

Gingerlee Dread remembers always having an inner need to help others. When challenges arise, like her near fatal accident in 1991, she meets them head-on with tenacity. 8 months in a full body cast and 3 years of rehabilitation, changed everything in her life except that inner need. Strongly motivated, she teaches both individuals and groups the skills necessary to survive and thrive in today's complicated world. No longer in the arts professionally, this talented artist, musician, writer, actor still nurtures these right brain activities amidst her retired entrepreneurial pursuits.

Chris Williams has categorized himself as a self taught computer nerd, history buff, trivia expert, constant reader and student of religions and the Bible. Arriving in Sebring in 2005, his association with Unity of Sebring brought his personal meditation practices to new heights and inspired him to enroll in Transformation Meditation courses on the web, thus certifying him to teach meditation techniques. Persons new to meditation or long time practitioners benefit from the group setting at Divinely Driven.

Divinely Driven is located at 2819 State Road 17 North in Sebring, For more information:Phone 863-214-6760

HCA Lake Wales Ridge Project on the Move
By Fred Leavitt

Naples Library exhibit installation, Feb. 2014

The reception for the HCA Lake Wales Ridge Project exhibit in Naples was great. Good turn out of interested and concerned people that never heard of Lake Wales Ridge. Lots of questions and very positive feedback.

Brochures were flying off the table in large numbers. People were studying and talking about them.

The District Manager of Collier County  Library system said word of this show is going to get out fast.

One person asked how he could support HCA's efforts to spread the word. I suggested he donate through our site. "I mean now", he replied, and pulled a $50 bill from his wallet.

There is no doubt this exhibit hit its mark. Many people outside of our area are learning about the importance and beauty of the Ridge. They will likely visit and/or support the needs of this threatened ecosystem.  The word of the artistic talent in Highlands County is also spreading.

Many thanks go out to Patty & Ron Lloyd for hanging these exhibits.

Meet Bob Fishel

Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Bob Fishel enjoys the mountain air of his home state during summer months and the warm Florida sun during winter months. He considers himself a native of both states and has been a resident of Avon Park, FL for over 36 years. A military veteran, Bob served four years in the United States Air Force.

An avid artist, woodworker, photographer and musician, Bob's first artistic inspiration came as a young child. An art teacher at
Summer Bible School took the children out to draw in a field of flowers and marveled at the detailed images on Bob's sketch pad. Self taught and hooked on art for life, Bob transformed himself from the pencil-clasping child to an artist proficient in oils, watercolor and his medium of choice, acrylics. He studied the old masters and many prominent artists and developed his own style which has been described as hi-definition. His art covers a variety of subjects and has been collected both nationally and internationally. Bob is a third generation artist..

Besides Bob's artistic success, Bob has succeeded in business. The majority of his career was with the world's largest semi trailer manufacturer, Fruehauf Corporation. From his Miami office, Bob's bottom line responsibility was managing the sales and service operations for the lower twelve counties of South Florida, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands and the export of equipment into Central and South America. He was later promoted to the sixth largest trucking market in America. In Charlotte, North Carolina his bottom line responsibilities covered four North & South Carolina operations, 157 employees, and a 20+ million annual sales volume. Just prior to retiring he was vice president of sales and marketing for a North Carolina trucking firm.

After retirement Bob began exhibiting his art in Mathews, NC and at the
TAG (The Artist Group) studio/ art gallery/classroom located at the Jacaranda Hotel in Avon Park. TAG's six member artists and art instructors sell art and teach oils, watercolor, acrylics, jewelry making and ceramics in association with South Florida State College's community education program.

Bob has served on the HCA's Board of Directors since January 9, 2012. His art may be viewed on the web at www.bobfishelart.webs.com.

Annual Report and Projection
By Fred Leavitt

2013 has been a rough year for HCA. Our resources have been diverted by the arts advocacy campaign. This had consequences:

  • The newsletter fell by the wayside.
  • Our plans were put on hold.
  • There were no fund-raising activities.
  • We lost our successful Antiroom Gallery owing to ownership change of the Kenilworth Lodge.
  • Communication to members of our activities suffered

But the tide has turned and things have never looked better for A&C in Highlands County, or the HCA:

  • The TDC has agreed to spend $105,000 exclusively to promote Highlands County as an A&C destination. A similar amount will be spent in 2015 toward that end.
  • In addition some $30,000 will be available annually for local A&C organizations to promote themselves and/or their events out of county, via brochures, print advertising, web design, video and/or social media without "heads-in-beds" being required.
  • Massey Communications in Orlando, with extensive experience in the A&C field, won the bid to develop a marketing campaign branding Highlands County as an A&C destination.
  • HCA has contracted with the Sebring Regional Airport to develop two art galleries in the main terminal that they will promote. A hanging system has been put in place and the venue can accommodate one person or group shows.
  • HCA has been given a valuable collection of work by Florida Master Artist, Peter Powell Roberts.
  • Plans are in the works to develop a museum, gallery for member artists, and cultural center anchored by this collection.
  • HCA has received a $116,000 service grant from MCI Creative in Atlanta to develop the facility.
  • Our newsletter, which has an 'open rate' more then double the industry standard, is back.
  • The HCA website is rated Number One  on Google for "art in Highlands County" as well as "culture in Highlands County".
  • Our membership is growing.

HCA is coming out of the trenches and moving forward with the job of creating opportunities for its members. Thanks for hanging in.

Newlett show 3, 14 The Yellow Brick Road

By Stefanie Newlett

April 4 - May 3

"I was cleaning my yard one day and picking up these palm fronds. Well instead of throwing them away I saw faces in them. After studying their shape I cleaned, created my palette of acrylic paints and voilą they were transformed into what my mind visualized. I then sealed them with a UV coating. Thinking of what to paint on a palm frond is easy, finding the right palm frond is not. It can take days even weeks to find the right shape."

Drawing inspiration from her favorite childhood movie The Wizard of Oz Stefanie tells the story using native palm fronds.

Dear Fred,

Victory - your voice was heard on Capitol Hill.

Late last night, Congress released the details of its massive FY 2014 Omnibus spending bill. I am pleased to share that the online petition that you and 40,000 other arts advocates signed this fall helped lead the way to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) being allocated $146 million for the year. We cannot thank you enough for taking the time to sign and share our petition.

Because of members like you, arts advocates successfully prevented a proposed 49% budget cut from taking place! In fact, this new funding level is, in effect, an increase over last year's since Congress is suspending the automatic sequester cuts that began last year. NEA will now have the full spending power of $146 million to invest in community-based arts programs across the country

.

Together, we provided a strong voice for the arts. Thank you,

Nina Ozlu Tunceli
Executive Director
Americans for the Arts

Fred,
(Re. Lake Whaes Ridge Project)
How wonderful. You surely have made a lot of people in
HighlandsCounty proud and also invited many other Floridians to realize the potential value of such a project.  I'm pleased to be a part of the HCA even though I had no part in this wonderful project. Bravo.

Sunny Serafino

Just wanted to let you know that Gerry and I went to Tampa on Tuesday to see the Lake Wales Exhibition. WOW! Very impressive. I loved the paintings and the info brochures that were available. Good job! Keep up the good work. (And the library is fantastic...it's like a small city)

Goldie & Gerry Garnish

That is FANTASTIC news! (Naples "Ridge Project reception) Way to go, Fred.

Fred, We are so fortunate to have you in our art community and as a leader.

Thank you.

Nancy Dale

I am so proud of " the fight " for what's RIGHT for A&C here in Highlands Cty ......and all your efforts

Patsy Cross

Hey, Fred. Thanks for being the squeaky wheel in this project. You really get things done, although with a lot of heartache. Thank you from all of us writers. Barbara Beswick

Bob and I want to thank you for your firm leadership when everyone thought it would be impossible to change anything. The future of A&C tourism in HighlandsCounty is largely due to your efforts. We want to commend you for a job well done. We have everything we need in HighlandsCounty to be a wonderful tourist draw, but without the ability to advertise what we have, nothing will happen

Again, thanks

Harriet and Bob Porter

Thank you for all you do for the Arts in HighlandsCounty.....

We will be there for you....

Love ya

Judy Nicewitz

Fred Leavitt has dedicated the last three years fighting to get the
artists and artisans of
HighlandsCounty
their just due and has done a
great job. In doing so he has had to be aggressive and undoubtedly has
stepped on some toes. I'm sure Fred had to come to meetings over that three year period supercharged with tenacity (as well as testosterone) in an attempt to level the playing field which he has done. Now its time to regroup and beat the swords into plowshares in order to break fallow ground

Jim Fitch

I am both humbled and motivated by your letters. Thank you.

On Your Birthday
Florida State Arts Plate

Dear HCA,

I just got my Florida State of the Arts license plate and the process could not have been easier! I wanted this colorful, happy-looking tag the moment I saw it but I put it off because I thought the process would be a time-consuming hassle. Was I ever wrong! I was the only person at the desk and I was in and out the door within 5 minutes with the tag in my hand.

People ask me all the time where I got this pretty tag because they want one too. I am quick to tell them that $20 from each tag is donated to the HCA. Its a really good thing!

Miss J. L. "SAM" Heede

SpringLake

Buy a Florida State of the Arts license plate. Enrich yourself and your community. $20 from the cost of the plate is donated by the state to HCA.  The funds are then re-granted by HCA to A&C organizations in Highlands County.  Show you care and wear your new plates proudly.

Wild and Places Between: Dennis Aufiery
March 5 - May 2, 2014

For painter Dennis Aufiery, social and cultural issues, identity and the individual human condition are subjects as much as composition. Power, time, desire, loss, ambiguity, the environment are all mixed in his work. These concepts flow concurrently with ideas about color and form. Beautiful color can be used to seduce the viewer, but the image, subject, or the way it's painted can create doubt.
