  Superintendent's Message

Welcome back to an exciting school year. Staff members have been busy developing instructional schedules and applying curricular opportunities to their lesson plans.

As in prior years, Itasca School District 10 students performed well on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test.  We were proud to be recognized on the front page of the Daily Herald for the excellent scores that were attained by our students.

We welcome our newly employed principal, Mr. Jason Taylor.  He comes to us with classroom and leadership experience in elementary education.  His knowledge of teaching and learning will greatly enhance our educational system in District 10.  Throughout the summer, Mr. Taylor has been busy reviewing all policies and procedures, as well as planning for a great start to the new school year.  We thank the IPTO for a wonderful welcoming function in August.

The upcoming school year is planned with numerous staff development opportunities for District 10 employees.  Workshops will include in-depth training in the understanding and application of the new Common Core Standards.

We look forward to greeting the students on the first day of school.

Upcoming Events

Within Itasca School District's website (www.itasca.k12.il.us), a calendar for the 2013-2014 school year contains a listing of all upcoming events.  Each school provides a variety of opportunities for students to showcase their accomplishments, as well as parents/guardians to visit our schools.

Budget

Itasca School District 10 has developed a budget under the Illinois State Board of Education guidelines.  Throughout the school year, each line item within the budget is closely monitored so the District may continue to move forth in our effort to achieving an end-of-the-year balanced budget.

Buildings and Grounds

Director of Operations, Kory Atkinson, has pioneered numerous projects to advance facilities that provide quality educational environments.  Due to an aging air conditioning system that no longer was providing a cooling system at Peacock Middle School, Mr. Atkinson was responsible for aquiring a grant to assist us in purchasing a new air conditioning unit.

PBIS

Peacock Middle School has implemented the character education program PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports) to benefit our entire student population. Here are the key points of PBIS:

  • We have three clearly defined expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Proud. Every student will be taught our three expectations in multiple settings throughout our school.
  • We continually self-evaluate our culture to effectively meet the social and emotional needs of all students.
  • We have a curriculum in place that will discourage inappropriate behaviors and teach the expected behaviors.
  • We will reduce the need to always be reactive by replacing it with a more proactive approach of teaching students our expectations first. Rather than waiting for a student to fail before we intervene, we provide the necessary supports aligned with the Social and Emotional Learning Standards (SEL).
  • Research has shown that PBIS not only improves a school culture, but it will also improve academic performance.
  • Students are rewarded with a Charger Check (reward ticket) for following our three expectations at school. Charger Checks can be used in many ways and teams have created reward lists for students along with the larger prize quarterly drawings done through the main office.

On Peacock's website, you can find a link to PBIS. You will find our expectation matrix and a Home matrix of how our three expectations could be followed at home. The Home matrix is simply a reference and we encourage parents to make changes to fit their family's needs. The only constant should be our expectations of Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Proud.

As a part of PBIS, teachers have been teaching lessons to our students on how to be respectful, responsible, and proud throughout the building. We are currently putting the cool tools (lesson plans) on our website. The most recent cool tool we taught was on bullying. If you have a moment, check out the cool tools on our website and see what your child has been learning.

Athletic  & Musician Success

The 2013 6th Grade Girls Cross country team had an amazing season overall. They put in many hours of hard work, running over 50 miles total! They also pushed themselves to improve on workouts and in races. This talented group of girls won every race that they competed in this year, and went on to dominate the conference meet. Three of the top 5 finishers at conference were from Peacock, including our very own conference champ! On behalf of Coach Crockett, Coach Larsen, and Coach Williams, congratulations on a great year!

Mr. Loest was happy to announce that four Peacock students were selected to participate in the ILMEA Honor Band after a rigorous audition process.   ILMEA stands for Illinois Music Education Association and making the ILMEA honor band is very difficult. Students receive their tryout music the preceding May, and then audition in front of a judge the following October. This year, 447 students from around the area auditioned for the honor band. Peacock Middle School had four students selected for the band.

In November, our selected students, and students from over 55 schools in DuPage and surrounding counties, will meet at Jacobs High School in Algonquin for a one-day rehearsal and performance with a nationally recognized conductor. This year's District 9 ILMEA band festival will be conducted by Indian Prairie School District 204 Coordinator for Music Education Mr. William Jastrow.

District #10 Outdoor Education

In early September, our 5th grade students took their annual trip to Oregon, Illinois for a three day outdoor learning experience!  Our students were housed at the Lorado Taft Field Campus located adjacent to Lowden State Park.  Students took part in various activities like birding, crafts, survival skills, orienteering, water ecology, pioneering, and team building.  This wonderful experience allowed our fifth graders a chance to explore nature and have a better understanding of their surroundings.  This was a wonderful way to start our school year!

Veteran's Day Presentation

On Monday, November 11th, all three district #10 schools will be visited by members of the Itasca VFW.  While so many other school districts choose to observe Veteran's Day as a nonattendance day, district #10 schools will be in session.  Our wonderful IPTO has scheduled visits from our veterans at all three schools.  This event is a wonderful way to celebrate all those who have served and a great reminder to all of our students about the sacrifices made on other's behalf.  We thank our wonderful VFW, all its members, and the IPTO for wonderful learning opportunity this presents!

5th grade Music 'Informance'

On Thursday, November 14th, our 5th grade students will have a chance to perform for their families while our music teacher, Mrs. Sharkey, informs you about their curriculum.  Thus the title...informance!  We are so proud that our students will have a chance to show off all the wonderful things they've been learning in the music classroom.  Mrs. Copot & Mrs. Rosale's students will perform from 12:45-1:20pm that day.  Ms. Anklam & Mr. Cuzzone's students will perform from 1:20-2:00pm.  Please join us for this wonderful occasion!  Later in our school year 4th grade students will have the same opportunity to perform for their parents.  We look forward to seeing you.

Response to Intervention

Primary school students receive reading and math instruction based upon their academic needs. One significant mode of instructional delivery is called Response to Intervention (RtI). Student assessment information in the areas of reading and math are evaluated to determine which students would benefit from an additional dose of targeted instruction to increase their understanding of key concepts. Students receive this targeted instruction on a weekly basis and are progress monitored. This progress monitoring is reviewed by the building level data team every 6 to 8 weeks to determine whether the intervention needs to be increased, decreased or eliminated. Parents are informed of this need for targeted instruction and progress monitoring information is shared with parents throughout the school year.

PBIS

Raymond Benson Primary School has implemented PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). PBIS offers students and staff common language and overall themes that support the creation of a positive school culture. Benson staff and students are familiar with the four clearly defined expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Proud and Be Safe. Students will be learning about what it looks like to be safe, responsible, proud and safe in a variety of locations within the building as well as outside of the school building including the playground and the school bus. Parents and staff will be learning about this as well so that they can use common language and encourage students to follow the expectations. Currently the primary school has an internal PBIS coach and a building level team that is working on a PBIS handbook for the primary building.   We are looking forward to seeing PBIS continue to grow and expand within the primary school over the 2013-14 school year and beyond.
