Happy Summer, LBFE Volunteers!
Dear Volunteers,
If you didn't make it to our benefit, Laughing At Our Age 3, do check out our photo gallery below for a sample of the fun and laughter had by all at our May 18 event.
Lots of hard work went into creating the evening, and we are very grateful to Jill Sondergaard, Tom Billigmeier, Karen Lashbrook, Judy Peters, Mimi Houston, Phil Armstrong, Sue Kyllonon, Kris and Dave Jones, Jenna Archer, Carissa Wallin, Terry Doyle and LuAnne Speeter. The evening rocked, thanks to you!
In upcoming event news, please join us at Minneapolis' beautiful Loring Park for the Twin Cities Pride Festival on Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26, 10 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. We'd love to have you visit our booth. Please consider serving as an LBFE ambassador: Just click here to fill a two-hour volunteer shift . Our booth will be in the Boomer Town area.
And, of course, please don't forget to check out our upcoming events at which volunteers are always welcome and driving opportunities are on offer.
As always, if you have questions about any of our volunteer opportunities or need any support related to helping us relieve elder isolation and loneliness, please call me at 612.746.0732 or e-mail me at gafton@littlebrothersmn.org.

Friendship and Flowers
A thank you and an opportunity
Our fabulous Minneapolis Friendship and Flowers Ambassador Iva Hawkins is stepping away from her role as lead coordinator for the monthly Saturday morning program and will be dearly missed. Hats off and special thanks to you, Iva!
Like her St. Paul counterpart, Julie Kraus, Iva has performed her Friendship and Flowers (F & F) work with gusto and warmth. Now we need to find someone to fill her shoes and join the Minneapolis F & F team on the third Saturday of the month to help package cookies and flowers, welcome volunteers and send them off with smiles to deliver friendship and treats to our elder friends. If you'd like to help out or learn more details, please call Georgia at 612.746.0732 or e-mail her at gafton@littlebrothersmn.org Thank you!

George
George still lives in his own beautiful home in St. Paul not far from Battle Creek Regional Park. His wife and their two sons are no longer living, and George has few family members left. He is a WWII veteran and enjoyed many years making intricate stained glass sculptures and won an award for building replicas of the ice castles featured at the Winter Carnival! He is very talented. George is a social person but doesn't get out much or have many visitors. He does have a nurse who helps with his medical needs. He loves having visitors, bird-watching out his panoramic windows, taking scenic drives, or going to lunch. He is a very warm and be would be good match for an individual or a couple, though not perhaps well-suited to small children, given he has some balance issues.

Steven
Steven is 67, single and childless. He grew up with his parents and sister in Sioux City, but his family has passed away, and he is now very lonely most days. There are a couple friends he keeps in touch with over the phone, but he has

little opportunity to get out of the group home he lives in. In addition, he has a hard time getting around on his own, as he is wheelchair-bound. He doesn't watch TV and says time passes very slowly in his world. Steven is very intelligent and loves conversation about faith, science and technology, mechanics and electronics and trucking. He is pursuing a license for amateur radio. He is comfortable and happy with the group home he lives in, but there are not many people to socialize with and very few activities going on. He is friendly, and his greatest hope is to connect with a new friend (male or female) who shares his interests; though any effort toward helping overcome his isolation would be dearly valued.

Elder Day Dreams ...
Hook, Line and Sinker
Bob would love to go on a fishing jaunt that includes a boat ride versus just fishing from shore. He's excited to team up with someone who enjoys "the hunt" as much as he does. He is 68 and lives in North Minneapolis. He is very kind and easy to talk to and is passionate about all things fishing.
Game for Anything Fun!
If you would like to offer an Elder Day Dream of your own creation to one of our elders, please contact Georgia at 612.746.0732 or gafton@littlebrothersmn.org.
Please be aware, LBFE cannot issue in-kind donation receipts to volunteers for costs associated with Elder Day Dreams. Thank you. |
July Birthday Party Sponsorship Needed Summer's here! And that means the birthday season at Bradford House on Lake Josephine is fast-approaching with a promise of much joy for our elder friends. Our lakeside birthday parties are among our most-anticipated gatherings of the year. Our elders look forward to being out in the sunshine overlooking the sparkling water. To ensure summer fun on the lake for our elders, we need sponsorship for our July 20 event.
Birthday party sponsorship can include financial help with all or any of the following: food (yes, that does include birthday cake!), beverages, party supplies (plates, silverware cups, napkins, etc.) and decorations. In addition, sponsorship of Metro Mobility rides is a great help, too. Party favors and small gifts for our elders are also much-appreciated.
If you'd like to help sponsor, or know a group that would be open to sponsoring our June or July lakeside birthday, please contact Georgia at 612-746-0732 or reach her via email at gafton@littlebrothersmn.org. |

Many LGBT elders face a high risk of isolation and loneliness. Fear of discrimination often discourages them from seeking critical social support. Over the last four years in response to this circumstance, LBFE has partnered with various LGBT organizations to reach out and connect with such elders. The Pride Festival is a wonderful opportunity for us to invite LGBT elders into the LBFE family. Help us extend that welcome!
Pride features over 400 exhibitors, 40 food and beverage booths, 20 sponsors, and 300,000+ visitors who participate in this great free celebration of our LGBT community.
