MARCH 2016
You're Invited ...
Volunteer Appreciation Brunch
& Other LBFE Highlights
Volunteer Manager Georgia Afton

Dear Volunteers,

"What good would it do me to live longer if I couldn't experience more love?"

Pat Cook asked this question recently, as he reflected on what it means to be a visiting volunteer with LBFE and have an elder friend in his life. Check out our photo gallery, and "see" for yourself how he answers his own question.

In this issue you'll find volunteer Jethra Spector's touching tribute to her Friendship and Flowers buddy Dennis. We also have two Elder Days Dreams for you this month, one for pizza lovers and one for a trip to J.C. Penney's. In addition, Agnes, an accomplished jazz musician would love to find a visiting volunteer who shares her passion for all-things musical.

You can also sign up to volunteer for Easter, see what Kevin Kling is up to on behalf of LBFE plus learn how membership in RSVP holds big benefits for volunteers over 55. And, of course, please don't forget to check out our upcoming events at which volunteer drivers are always welcome.

As always, if you have questions about any of our volunteer opportunities or need any support related to helping us relieve elder isolation and loneliness, please call me at 612.746.0732 or e-mail me at gafton@littlebrothersmn.org

Warmly, with thanks for all you do,

Georgia

Dennis
Volunteer Tribute to
Elder FriendDennis

By Jethra Kapp,
Friendship and Flowers Volunteer

I met Dennis while on a Friendship and Flowers visit in January of 2012. I was impressed the minute I entered Dennis's room because it was wall-to-wall posters of movies and musicals. Dennis was a great fan of classic films and movie versions of many musicals. He had the soundtracks for over 200 of them! I know because one summer I undertook the serious project of organizing all of his cassette tapes in alphabetical order and then typing up a list that he could look at. That list was over 20 pages long!

Dennis's love of the theater began when he was young. He acted in many school plays and musicals. His childhood friend Diane remembers that they would watch movies together as kids and then act out scenes for the sheer fun of it.

Dennis and I discovered early on that our birthdays were only days apart and some of the best times we shared were those we spent celebrating growing older together. We both loved Chinese
food, so it became a tradition to have a birthday lunch together at the Chinese restaurant down the block from where he lived. I may have to carry on this tradition, even now that he's gone. It would be a wonderful way for me to keep his memory alive, and perhaps it will help me to not miss him so much.

Just Add Music ...
Visiting Volunteer OpportunityVisitingVol
by Kelly Farrell, Program Manager

Agnes was born in Hungary 84 years ago; she loves jazz, is an accomplished pianist and is exceptionally knowledgeable about all-things musical. She would be thrilled to find a friend to share her love for jazz clubbing, strolls in the park, visits to the zoo and local museums.

She is very mobile as well as super hospitable. She would enjoy having someone visit her in her apartment, as she is quite isolated with no family or friends nearby in her East St. Paul neighborhood. A terrific conversationalist, Agnes is amiable and has a compelling life story to share.

Back in the day, she belonged to a jazz trio that traveled the country playing the Holiday Inn circuit. She loves to come to LBFE gatherings and performs at many of our events including our holiday celebrations. If you are joining us for Easter, you are sure to hear her play.

Program Manager

Elder Day Dream Opportunity
Pepperoni Pizza Lover WantedPizza
by Chelsea Sander, Program Manager

Elder Day Dreams offers simple, creative one-time opportunities for volunteers to treat elders and turn simple dreams into reality.

This one has Barbara's name on it!
At 78, Barbara has a big craving for pizza and for pepperoni pizza in particular. She hasn't had the cheesy, meaty delight in ages and would love to share a slice with a fellow aficionado. She happens to live just around the corner from Pizza Luce in Uptown, one of the best pizza joints in town. But she has never been there, though she can practically smell melting cheese and sizzling pepperoni from her window.

Program Manager Chelsea Sander
I would love to hear from you if you'd like to help fulfill Barbara's Elder Day Dream. Please contact me at 612.746.0727 or at csander@littlebrothersmn.org

If you would like to offer an Elder Day Dream of your own creation to one of our elders, please contact Georgia at 612.746.0732 or gafton@littlebrothersmn.org.

Please be aware, LBFE cannot issue in-kind donation receipts to volunteers for costs associated with Elder Day Dreams. Thank you.

Elder Day Dream Opportunity
A Three-year Old Gift Card Needs Using
by Christina Fairbanks, Program Manager

Program Manager Christina Fairbanks
Dorothy lives on West 7th in St. Paul. Three years ago for Christmas she received a $50 gift card for JC Penney, and she still hasn't been able to use it. The store has locations at both Southdale and Rosedale malls.

Dorothy says she can't remember the last time she's been in a department store and is very excited to find a female volunteer to accompany her on a shopping expedition, and afterwards she would love to share a hamburger from McDonald's or Burger King with you.

If you would like to connect with Dorothy and make her simple dream come true, please contact me at 612.746.0746 or cfairbanks@littlebrothersmn.org

If you would like to offer an Elder Day Dream of your own creation to one of our elders, please contact Georgia at 612.746.0732 or gafton@littlebrothersmn.org.

Visiting Volunteer Pat Cook, affectionately known as Pat Cool by LBFE staff, wrote to us recently:

"Did I say how grateful I am to LBFE for providing the opportunity for me to  exercise my heart on a regular basis?  What good would it do me to live longer if I couldn't experience more love? Visiting with lonely elders is a great way to deepen my heart's capacity."

The photos below are a beautiful testament to Pat and elder friend Betty exercising their hearts. If you'd like to share a thought and some photos for the gallery, please contact Georgia at gafton@littlebrothersmn.org or at 612.746.0732.
