SEPTEMBER 2015
In this issue ...

Georgia with elder friend David at the Rockin' Roseville Rotary Picnic

Dear Volunteers,

Thank you so much for all you do to help us bring companionship and joy into the lives of elders who live in lonely, isolated circumstances.
Your efforts really do count, and we want to offer you meaningful, fun opportunities to reach out and touch our elders' lives.

That's why we are so excited this month to bring you new ways to connect with elders through our new program Elder Day Dreams, which includes Elder Day Dreams on Deck and Elder Day Dreams Out and About Town. Perfect for folks looking for one-time, low-commitment, highly meaningful ways to make a difference, these opportunities are ones we invite you to share with your friends, families and coworkers. Please don't be shy about forwarding this newsletter or sharing my number, 612.746.0732 or e-mail, gafton@littlebrothersmn.org with folks. Or contact me yourself, and I'll be happy to reach out to any person or group you think may like to volunteer with us. Helping us get the word out is one of the most valuable ways you can ensure companionship replaces loneliness in our elders' lives. To attract new volunteers we are now offering monthly information sessions in concert with orientations for new volunteers. So please be sure to pass the word along.

Speaking of replacing elder loneliness with companionship, in this issue you'll meet a lovely elder in search of family friendship. You'll also learn a fun fact about another and get the scoop on a great opportunity to volunteer with our program staff to reach out and invite our elder friends to parties and gatherings. Also it's not too late to sign up to deliver Friendship and Flowers on September 19, and both September and October are chock-full of wonderful gatherings to get our elders out and about. Check out our events here; the need for drivers is great and so are you and your wheels!

Many, many thanks for all you do. We hope you enjoy this issue of Among Volunteers. Your feedback and ideas are always very welcome, so please don't hesitate to reach out to me with your thoughts.

Warmly,

Georgia

DreamsELDER DAY DREAMS

LBFE's newest program turns elder dreams into reality

Friendship LBFE Style

We are so excited to introduce our new Elder Day Dream program, which offers simple, creative one-time opportunities for volunteers to treat elders and turn simple dreams into reality. If you'd like to be involved, we have three ways you can join the fun and really make a difference in an elder's life:

1. Choose an elder dream to fulfill

Each month Among Volunteers will feature a couple of simple elder day dreams you can sign up to fulfill. Click here to see Elder Day Dreams on Deck. Be inspired: click here to check out elder dreams recently fulfilled.

2. Create your own elder day dream to share

Do you have something you'd love to do, or somewhere you'd love to go and are just itching for someone share it with? Terrific, then we invite you to create an Elder Day Dream of your own made for two. We'll find you an elder who's just as excited as you are and would love to fulfill it with you. Click here to e-mail Georgia your idea or call her at 612.746.0732. Be inspired: click here to see the dream elder Esther and volunteer Katherine Schafer shared in August.

3. Sponsor an elder day dream out and about town

Donate a couple of tickets to a game, movie, play, musical, museum or a gift certificate to a restaurant, spa, salon  or anything you care to share to make an elder's day. We'll find an elder and a volunteer to share the dream. Wonderful volunteer Katherine Schafer's got the ball rolling on this one. Check out her Out and About Town in October offering.
DreamsonDeckELDER DAY DREAMS ON DECK

Check out Elder Day Dreams on Deck just below to see if you can fulfill a wish and make a world of difference in an elder's life:

Animal lover dreams of a trip to the zoo
Barbara is 76, and she adores animals, yet in all the years she's lived in the Twin Cities, she has never been to either of our zoos. Would you like to fulfill her life-time wish to see the tigers and the bears?

Jazz buff dreams of a musical night out

Do you love jazz?  So does Agnes, and she would love to check out a jazz club for an evening's fun and flair with you. An accomplished musician in her own right, she might even teach you a thing or two about singing and playing the Blues.

If you can make Barbara's or Agnes' dream come true, please contact Georgia at 612.746.0732 or at gafton@littlebrothersmn.org.
OutAndAboutOUT AND ABOUT TOWN in October
Thanks to volunteer Katherine Schafer, we have a wonderful Out and About Town offering for October: Shakespeare's Henry IV staged by the Ten Thousand Things Theatre Company performed at the Minneapolis Veterans' Association on October 14 at 2 p.m.

If you would like to take an elder to the play, or learn about many other Out and About Town opportunities, please contact Georgia at 612-746-0732 or at gafton@littlebrothersmn.org.

AugDreamElder day dreams already coming true

Elder Day Dreams spontaneously and unofficially launched last month and is already proving a big hit.
Katherine and Esther on the moon!

Just ask elder Esther F. and volunteer Katherine Schafer, who recently enjoyed a trip to the Science Museum and marveled at the space exhibit thanks to another volunteer, Yana Frank, who works at the museum and scored some free tickets for LBFE. Asked about the outing, Esther, chuckled, "it was an out-of-this-world experience!"

Laura E.'s simple day dream was to get out in the summer sunshine, window shop at Target and have lunch at White Castle or satisfy her sweet tooth at an ice-cream parlor. Well she really hit the jackpot because not one, not two - but three volunteers stepped forward to make Laura's dream come true. Hats off to Bhavik Patel and Ariel Pittner who already showed Laura a wonderful time and have plans to take her out again. And many thanks also to Barb Olson for giving Laura another fun outing to look forward to.
FamilyFriendsMATCHES MADE IN HEAVEN ... Volunteer opportunity for family companionship

Lovely Mary R. has been with LBFE since 2013. She is 100 per cent Irish in her heart and has the gift of the Blaney to prove it. Otherwise, she says she's 50 per cent German!

Being a wonderful "Irish" conversationalist with an upbeat, optimistic attitude, she has a passion for learning and likes to be intellectually stimulated. She loves lectures and is especially fond of history. She also enjoys hearing about people's travels and is a wonderful host. She enjoys trips to the nearby library, Half Price Books and in particular, loves F. Scott Fitzgerald. She's been trying to learn the computer and is open to instruction.

Mary's idea of a match made in heaven is to find a family she can invite into her rich, yet too-solitary life. She loves children, lives in her own home in the MacGroveland neighborhood of St. Paul and gets around fine without a walker. She is however lonely day-to-day and is recently cancer-free. Due to her long, but successful, battle with cancer, Mary had postponed coming out to LBFE parties and gatherings for quite some time but is now eager to rejoin to the fun.

Speaking of her love for the Emerald Isle, she says, "Ireland does something to you. You always feel different when you return from there." Needless, to say she has won the heart of your Irish volunteer manager, who was born and raised on the West coast of Ireland!

If you would like to meet Mary and make a wonderful new friend, please contact Georgia at 612.746.0732 or at gafton@littlebrothersmn.org.

Cheer an elder's day:

Phone invitation volunteers needed

Would you like the pleasure of making someone's day and of helping LBFE staff spread warmth and welcome to our elder friends? If so, you're just the person we're looking for.

We need volunteers to help us make phone invitations to elders as we enter our very busy fall and winter party and gatherings season. So if you have a few hours a month, or every couple of weeks to spare, enjoy making someone's day and have a warm, patient phone manner, we'd love to hear from you.

Calls can be made from our offices or from your home. To find out more call Georgia at 612.746.0732 or e-mail her at gafton@littlebrothersmn.org. You'll be glad you did and so will the elders you call!
