'LET'S DO LUNCH' CAFÉ BRINGS LGBT SENIORS TOGETHER IN A WELCOMING, SUPPORTIVE ATMOSPHERE
Two respected senior organizations join forces to reduce elder isolation in the LGBT community by providing social engagement and information about senior services.

 MINNEAPOLIS
(August 14, 2015) - The Minneapolis/St. Paul Chapter of Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly (LBFE), in partnership with Prime Timers MSP, has launched Let's Do Lunch, a monthly cafe for seniors in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

Let's Do Lunch Café is open every Fourth Friday of the month from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly (LBFE), 1845 East Lake Street in Minneapolis, MN, 55407. LBFE is conveniently located in the heart of Midtown Minneapolis, just blocks from the Blue Line/Lake Street Station. The cafe serves a free lunch, which includes sandwiches, dessert and beverages. The next Let's Do Lunch Café takes place Friday, August 28.
"While LBFE is concerned about elder isolation in general, we are aware that the risks of isolation are even greater among those in the LGBT community," said Rev. Harry Hartigan, LBFE Board President and Prime Timers member. According to the 2012 Twin Cities LGBT Aging Needs Assessment Survey Report, LGBT persons are more likely to live alone and are less likely to have a caregiver or children that look after them as they age. "LGBT elder isolation is a critical issue in our communities," said Rev. Hartigan. "Even in our more enlightened society, there is a fear factor that keeps older LGBT persons from seeking the care they may need. For this reason, we're asking neighborhood organizations, healthcare providers and faith communities to promote Let's Do Lunch Café to their constituents."

Let's Do Lunch Café provides an opportunity for LGBT elders to stay socially engaged and reduce the risk of isolation by coming together in an atmosphere that's relaxed and welcoming. The lunch is free to attendees. "We want to remove any barriers to getting out and enjoying some companionship -- even if folks are a little short on cash that month," said Rev. Hartigan.

Let's Do Lunch Café is made possible through the LGBT Aging Initiative, a PFund grant opportunity awarded jointly to LBFE and Prime Timers MSP. To register for Let's Do Lunch, contact dfehring@littlebrothersmn.org  or 612.746.0726.
