Georgia Afton - She's Back!
Meet our new (and not so new)Volunteer and Outreach Manager

Dear Fabulous Volunteers,

Georgia Afton here, your new Volunteer and Outreach Manager just wanting to introduce myself and let you know that I am excited to connect with you. I am here to serve you and invite you to call or email me if there is anything at all I can do to support you in your wonderful efforts to help replace elder loneliness and isolation with companionship and joy. My direct line is 612.746.0732, and my email address is gafton@littlebrothersmn.org. I will be reaching out to you also, but in the meantime, please feel free to contact me with any volunteer dreams or concerns you care to share.

I'm no stranger to LBFE having worked here in a fundraising capacity in the late '90's early 2000's. Our mission to relieve elder isolation is very close to my heart. Two years ago my father died alone in Ireland in a small town with no family and no organization like LBFE in his life. Here alone in America, as an immigrant, with no family in the Twin Cities, I am keenly aware of the prospect of ageing alone. When I worked at LBFE before I had the privilege of having close volunteer-like relationships with seven elders, each of whom touched my life in unique and profound ways. I stayed connected with several  these elders in a volunteer capacity after I left LBFE to attend graduate school. So I'm very familiar with volunteering among elders and look forward to partnering with you as you reach out to the elders who now belong to the LBFE family.

I know Josh Windham created wonderful relationships with many of you and was dearly loved by our elders. I hope to continue the great work he did and look forward to meeting and serving you.

Thank you so much for all you do for our elders,

Georgia

Can you fulfill this simple elder dream?

Laura is a wonderful 80-year old woman living in St. Paul, who joined the LBFE family in 2007, and recently shared with her staff person Christina Fairbanks how much she'd like to get out in the summer sunshine. She would love to find a companion to share an hour's window shopping with her at Target followed by lunch or a trip to an ice-cream parlor, which she would consider the cherry atop a perfect day.

A one-time regular at LBFE gatherings, Laura would also love to connect with a volunteer who might like to accompany her to our next Cards, Crafts and Coffee gathering on August 27 at our Lake Street location. This lovely, lively event is a big hit among our elders, and Laura would love to come out and join the fun once again.

If you can make one or both of Laura's dreams come true, please contact Georgia at 612.746.0732 or at gafton@littlebrothersmn.org.

Matches Made in Heaven ... Volunteer Opportunity for a Music Aficionado

Agnes is not only a music aficionado, she and her dear departed husband were professional entertainers who wowed audiences with their musical act for many years. A jazz and classical pianist, Agnes has generously shared her talent with elder friends and volunteers at many of our gatherings. She brings out the absolute best in our piano, while also bringing much joy to the ears and hearts of all lucky enough to listen and fall under her spell.

If you love music and can offer a warm caring spirit, Agnes would love to connect with you. She may even be persuaded to treat you to a private concert in her cozy home on the border of Oakdale and Maplewood. Born in Hungry in 1935, Agnes spent much of her childhood, including the war years, living in Germany.  She is a strong, resilient woman with a deeply tender heart and is in excellent health. She would love to go to concerts and even a night club or two to catch some jazz. Most of all, she would love to find a companion for warm conversation and mutually caring friendship.

If you would like to meet Agnes, please contact Georgia at 612.746.0732 or at gafton@littlebrothersmn.org. Click here to read a visiting volunteer job description.
The Gutsy Gauntlet ... Dare you pick it up?

That's the question and the challenge Ron Snell, Prime Timer and LBFE volunteer extraordinaire is tossing down to you his fellow volunteers. Each third Thursday morning of the month at our Cards, Crafts and Coffee event in Minneapolis Ron and his gutsy gang of elder friends play, or rather compete, in a spirted game of Guts - a fast-paced and deliriously cool dice game that more than one elder describes as the best fun they have all month long. Easy to learn and easy to play, Guts is great way to get to know people. So we happily invite any volunteer who'd like to come with an elder friend to join us to cash in on a good time. Besides a game of Guts, there are many other enjoyable doings at Cards, Crafts and Coffee. If you don't have a specific elder in your life right now, we can easily find someone who would be happy to ride to with you. Just contact Georgia at 612.746.0732 or at gafton@littlebrothersmn.org  and she'll set you up with a date to bring along and enjoy a morning of fun.
