Among Volunteers masthead_gif

MARCH 2014
Bring Easter joy to an elder as a volunteer!
Easter is approaching fast and volunteer positions for our annual Easter dinner are already beginning to fill up! Click here to sign up for a volunteer position. Currently, our greatest need is for Volunteer Drivers and Meal Deliverers.
Easter Dinner will held be at the Prom Center located at 484 Inwood Ave. in Oakdale on Sunday, April 5 from 12-2 p.m. Shift time will vary depending on the volunteer role.
If you have trouble signing up, please contact Danielle Fehring at or 612.746.0726.
Your participation ensures isolated elders have an Easter dinner to remember!

Celebrate and share at our

Visiting Volunteer gathering

When: Thursday, March 19, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Where; LBFE, 1845 E Lake St., Minneapolis
Please join us for this informational support gathering specifically designed for Visiting Volunteers. There will be a time of open sharing, so please come prepared to give a brief testimonial about your experiences, including what has been particularly beneficial for your elder during your visits. We will also have a time for feedback on how to best communicate with you about the elders you visit, and to discuss our time reporting process.
Light refreshments and beverages will be served. Please RSVP to Josh Windham at by Monday, March 16.
We hope to see you on March 19!

Help fulfill a wish

Dinner and a movie with Marie

We are looking for a volunteer to help fulfill our elder Marie's wish.
Do you enjoy going to the movies? Are you interested in making an 86-year-old very happy? Then please consider making Marie's wish come true.

Marie is an LBFE elder who lives in St. Louis Park at Sholom Home West. She has recently asked to be taken on an outing. Marie lives on a memory care floor and no longer goes out without an escort. This lovely woman would like to go to dinner and a movie -- would you consider being her "date"?

If you are an existing LBFE volunteer and are interested or want more details, please contact Chelsea Sander at or 612.746.0727.

Fun things to do with your elder friend
Are you sometimes at a loss for activities that both you and your elder friend will enjoy? Here is a list of some fun ideas. Always remember that even the simplest activity goes a long way in making those we serve more connected to their community.
  1. Talk about what you both have been up to since your last visit together.
  2. Bring photos of family and friends -- from days gone by or recent snapshots.
  3. Read newspapers and magazine aloud to keep your elder "up to date."
  4. Listen to music together...bring your elder's favorite type of music.
  5. Bring a favorite recipe book to explore or to plan a meal together.
  6. Take a walk together as weather and health permits.
  7. Tell jokes to one another. Bring along a joke book if either of you need help.
  8. Help your elder friend write or send cards out to people, or help them sort mail.
  9. Create a photo album, framed photograph collection or poster to hang up.
  10. Plant a seedling together for your elder friend's windowsill or patio.
