December 29, 2014

29 de Diciembre, 2014

At the beginning of this year, we had the opportunity to confront the reality of drug violence in Agua Prieta. Agua Prieta is considered one of the most peaceful border towns in terms of "drug violence".

On January 16 and 18, and then again in March there were multiple shootings that had many concerned that the violent drug wars that have plagued other cities might be arriving here. We are grateful that there has not been an escalation of violence and no other violent incidents have occurred since, but realize that while the violence may not be overt currently, we only have to listen to our sisters and brothers in the CRREDA or hear of the concern of our neighbors whose loved ones are in hiding to know the destructive force of drugs on family and community. The reality of the drug culture continues to be present in our community and that we are called to be instruments of peace.

In a mission connections letter, Mark and Miriam reflected about FDC's response and call and shared part of Pastor Rodolfo's incredible sermon in the aftermath of the initial violence in which he "reminded the church that we are called to be a people of peace in the midst of the violence and to not live in fear but rather open ourselves up to be salt, and light and to share God's peace."

In 2014, we continued to strengthen our relationship with CRREDA walking alongside hundreds of men and women in recovery, became a founding organization of a Drug Prevention Network in the schools and have worked with our partners of Caf Justo and CRREDA to develop the plans for a new coffee shop that will also serve as a center for drug prevention and intervention which we plan opening in mid-2015.

We are planning on expanding our impact in 2015 and hope that you will continue being a part of transforming the border into a place of genuine peace.  We need your support through your encouragement, financial gifts, and prayers!

Please consider including Frontera de Cristo in your year end giving and in your monthly giving for 2015!  To keep up on a weekly bases of the happenings at FDC Friend us on Facebook!

Migrant Resource Center Hosts Christmas Day Potluck

Over 80 men, women and children from over 30 states in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and the US gathered for our annual potluck on Christmas day at the Migrant Resource Center.  Around 60 of the participants had recently either been deported or voluntarily repatriated from the United States and were far from home.  The rest were folks who serve or support the ministry of the MRC throughout the year.  All enjoyed a delicious buffet of traditional foods from different parts of the US and Mexico as well as some much needed singing and laughter.

In reflections from 2012, Mark and Miriam talk about the Migrant Resource Center being a "strange dwelling" for God.
