Calvin Coolidge

THE COOLIDGE QUALIFYING CUP TOURNAMENT FEBRUARY 6TH!

"The triumphs of the tongue have rivaled,
if not surpassed, those of the sword."

-Calvin Coolidge
(college debater and 30th President of the United States)

Save the date! February 6th, the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation and the New York City Urban Debate League host the Coolidge Cup Qualifying Tournament at the Bronx High School of Science in New York City.  The topic is Resolved: The United States federal government should adopt a carbon tax. The tournament will feature high school public forum debate, middle school public forum debate, high school policy debate, and high school parliamentary debate. The Coolidge Cup Qualifying Tournament will feature a panel by experts on the topic of the carbon tax, demonstration debate, presentation on the Coolidge Scholars Program which offers merit based scholarships to high school juniors, scholarships to the Worlds Schools Summer Debate Camp, scholarships to the Coolidge Cup Tournamentintroduction to the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundationand much more!

We would like to thank the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation for making debate accessible to so many students.  President Coolidge himself was a college debater and according to the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation, "Debate is the optimal vehicle to develop leaders. Evidence suggests that students with debate experience at the high school level will represent a disproportionately large cross-section of tomorrow's leaders."

So please save the date on February 6th for New York City's first ever Coolidge Cup Qualifying Tournament!

Thank you everyone for supporting another historical week for
New York City debaters!

The New York City Urban Debate League is honored to partner with the Calvin Coolidge Foundation and the Bronx High School of Science to host the Calvin Coolidge Debate Invitational. Calvin Coolidge was the 30th President of the United States. R.M. Washburn described him in his biography of President Coolidge: "The people see in him one of their own. The powerful turn to him because he is an intellectual aristocrat, and the weak because he is also a plain farmer. He is one of them all."  Click here to learn more about Calvin Coolidge.

The Coolidge Foundation was founded was formed in 1960 to preserve and promote the legacy of Calvin Coolidge. Among its many programs is a major debate program that brings hundreds of high schoolers to Plymouth Notch each summer to learn about Coolidge and debate topics related to presidential decision making. - Curt Stedron (School Teacher)

JUDGES
VOLUNTEER TO JUDGE A DEBATE TOURNAMENT!

As the nation's largest debate league, the NYCUDL hosts debate tournaments every Saturday during the school year. The only way this is made possible is because of volunteers like you. Everyone can judge. No debate experience is necessary. Judge training is provided at every tournament along with breakfast and lunch. This is democracy at its best...  community members coming together as citizen judges to participate in debates on our nation's toughest issues as well as supporting our next generation of leaders. Click here to sign up to judge on our judge calendar, or visit us at www.debate.nyc/volunteer, or email us at [email protected]!

DONATE TO DEBATE!

"My own conclusion is simple. Debate is the best kind of charity, worthy of all support, whether from presidents or regular dads. Fund it, watch it, judge it, give your kids to it: debate is America's forgotten sport" - Amity Shlaes

Our mission is that every school in New York City should have a debate team and every NYC student should have access to the best debate education opportunities. In 2011 there were less than 10 schools in NYC with competitive debate teams.  We were founded to change this. Today, there are over 100 schools with debate teams and over 2000 NYC students participate in debate each year.  These accomplishments are all because of volunteers and donors like you.  So please consider supporting NYC youth by donating to the New York City Urban Debate League so we can start debate teams at more schools.  CLICK HERE TO DONATE or learn about more ways you can support our mission by emailing us at [email protected] or calling us at 917-455-1079. Thank you!
